We harvested some Bourbon red turkeys this season. It was our first time we had someone come and show us how for future reference. I have to say that the turkey size was a little disappointing. I believe they were six month old males. And they weighed in at 13 pounds. We did have one white female. No idea what breed was. She weighed in 26 pounds. Much happier with that one. Next year it will be all whites. FYI we just hung them with zip ties to a cattle panel in the garden. No cones necessary. Actually the whole process was much more simple than I thought it would be. Needless to say we will be raising our own chickens and turkeys in the spring.

Make a walk over ladder ,four or five steps on each side, and flat across the top.. (seat). We knew a farmer that had one over fence wires. Worked perfectly. Plus was nice place to sit a chill if you wanted to. And he didn't have to cut his fence.

Happy Thanksgiving glad to see some of them made it. Home raised turkeys are the best. I hate the butchering but after the first one we did it proved worth it. And yes, grit is super important to turkeys because they will swallow everything they can get in their mouths. Also as a side note, not that it bothered me or that I don't do it too but a male, under a year old is called a Jake, over a year and it is a Tom. Females under a year are called Jenny, over a year and they are just hens.

You need to be commended for your generosity. I noticed that your friends at Hollar Homestead that you gave one of your turkeys to them for their thanksgiving. Hopefully your feast was filled with gratitude and your Christmas will be filled with the hope that Jesus brings. For generations there was no such thing as a kill cone. As a kid we let them flop and our neighbor tied their feet together and hung them over a clothesline before cutting off their heads.

Love this video! Thank you for the detail that other homesteaders are searching for. 🌞🌱❤️🦃. We processed our chickens on Oct 19th during a freezing morning. We learned a lot about the function of the plucker. Clogging happens so we would rinse with bio soap after a few birds. But overall we wished we would have done this on our homestead years ago. Blessings to all.

Well done! Thanks so much for showing all of that! I want to raise my first turkeys next year and I'm going to try the Blue Slates. I really like how you make your own propane heater and turkey cone...amongst so many other things. I didn't know about those small refrigerators. Cool! I have been a vegetarian most of my life but have slowly started to eat meat and am starting my own farm. I have cows, pigs and chickens so far. My first piglets will be born right before Christmas. I only mention that because I really enjoyed bringing them Thanksgiving treats like you did, too. I cooked and ate my first turkey since I was ten or eleven years old (I'm 44 now). I got a 5.76 lb heritage turkey from the farmers market. Can you believe how small it was?!! But it was just right for this year and me learning everything. I think you got great weights on your birds. They looked beautiful and healthy. I also used a roaster like you did. Lots of fat came off my bird...the gravy has a big fat cap on it today. So interesting! It was a great experience for me and I can't wait to raise my own. Thanks so much for your beautiful examples always!

I do really think you are some beautiful turkeys even though we’re going to eat them I really appreciated your beauty. I wasn’t expecting their feet to be So-o black.. that was a bit of a surprise for me. I have great respect for your ingenuity and making the turkey cone❣️❣️I didn’t think it was going to hold off to be honest but it did and I didn’t give you any trouble throughout the “fixing” process of six turkeys!! VERY IMPRESSIVE❣️ I was also very happy to see your daughter helping both of you to clean and harvest the turkeys. There’s something about doing that as a family and, she in fact probably has been doing it for years but I just liked knowing that all of you were working together for Thanksgiving as well as future meals with turkey. I could tell when you took that first bite of turkey that it was super tender. The only thing that I think a lot of people would miss by cooking it in the large”Cooker” VS. in the oven and getting a nice crispy skin that is Golden brown…That’s for me I’ll take moisture over color any day. You look like you guys had a wonderful Thanksgiving meal and I’m like you I like to save my pie/dessert for later after the meal has had time to settle. My mom always has opinion that you have the desert right now WITH the Neil, but I was always too stuffed in my stomach doesn’t like to mix sweets and savory. I’d like to wish you all a successful turkey harvesting event that was unique on this farm and I think you did a superb job and I want to wish you a belated happy Thanksgiving. I’m only sorry I didn’t get to see this before Thanksgiving day. I love your channel and keep doing what you do so well. My father did a lot of repurposing on his farm to instead of just going out and buying things. The people that even if you have the money and just go and pay $80-$100 for the Turkey cone, to me you just prove to the world that it wasn’t necessary and you could have that $80 for something else!!!! God bless you all🙏♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

There’s something so fundamentally fulfilling to the soul to raise from hatch with a happy life to the animal, a quick painless death, and harvesting you’re own meat. I loved having turkeys, they’re really fun birds to have around. I think they’re a good sustainable meat source. I think if I were to raise my own birds again I’d get a plucker. I harvested and skinned my extra roosters one year and it wasn’t as good, even if they were just for stock.
