This is one of the funniest scenes from the show . It was obviously a lot of fun for them too because Meredith and Justine can't stop laughing . I love it when Meredith says " Floor it Jen ! " . Michael J. Fox was the shows comedic slam dunk champ, but this scene proves that the rest of the cast had some pretty darn good comedic chops of their own. This is what made this show so good and such a big hit .
Meredith is the one doing her best not to break. Of course they had a safety take of this sequence but this take is just too priceless, with the audience as a part of the ludicrousness of the situation. Speaking of breaking in a scene, l think the only MJF break they ever left in is the Skippy army episode. The family receives a postcard from Skippy in Spanish, and the only recognizable word is 'Akron'. Tina Y says something like 'It sounds like like something about Ohio', and Justine nails this deadpan line...."How do you know Jennifer? It's Spanish." Right there you can see Fox break character and just about crack up, but they kept it. He has always given credit to Ms. Bateman as a fantastic straightperson. She could set up a joke so beautifully, all MJF had to do was hit the homer.
@@geoffreylogsdon162 Yes MJF has always said Justine Bateman was great to work with because she could set up a joke like a balloon so all he had to do was effortlessly dunk it. They really were a perfect comedic team .
The premise of this is ridiculous, but the cast was so fully committed that they made it hysterical. I laugh every time I see Elyse roll down the window and lean on the imaginary door.
What makes the scene is that the everyone but Steven knows how ridiculous it is and plays it for laughs when he's trying to be serious. You can also tell the actors are having fun as well.

I would LOVE to know how many times they had to redo this scene because they were laughing too hard! Even all these years later, this clip STILL cracks me up and is the reason my parents never taught me to drive in the kitchen! LoL Wish there were more shows today like this one! LOVE this show!
I STILL laugh hysterically when I watch this scene! I often wonder how many takes it took for them to be able to do this without cracking up. Why can't shows today be more like this? There were always lessons taught and laughter abundant. Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, there was a show like this making us laugh and teaching us lessons. I miss the 80s.
I am 78yo. I have never laughed so much,comedy like this doesn’t exist today,it is all guns and violence,by the way Mallory didn’t close the door at the start of the lesson also Jennifer didn’t attach her L.plates,all in all WELL DONE 😂

I remember the first time I saw this part, I was literally almost on the floor laughing. It was so hilarious, and I laughed more than I ever had. Great show. Love the sitcoms that were more like this one.
A was watching a rerun of the Big Bang Theory episode where Sheldon tries to learn how to drive. That's when I remembered this scene from Family Ties. I looked for it on RU-vid and found this clip. I like the Family Ties version better. Same premise, but they pulled it off without the use of driving simulator computers. Both are funny, though!
i actually toke this idea and did an improv sketch in high school. a driving instructor and 3 students have an errand to run and each driver has a different characteristic when they drive. the turning actions made the scene. great clip!
Steven trying to get out of the car but realizing his seatbelt is still on might possibly be the greatest moment of pantomine in the history of television.
I think the reason Steve wanted to do a simulated driving lesson was because he didn't want a repeat of what happened with Mallory (as seen in the 2nd season episode "Lady Sings the Blues").
When Michael tries to get up but is caught by his "seatbelt", you can see Justine cover her mouth trying not to break. Gross is a master in this scene and so is Tina Yothers. They keep it together...but the other half of the fun is Meredith and Justine. Again, I am sure they had a safety performance of this but this had to be done in front of an audience. Kind of a brilliant little sequence. And without MJF which is cool.
Yeah that 's right , it is from "My Best Friend's Girl" from season 7 . Lauren , Alex's girlfriend counsels Skippy on his lack of a love life and he falls for her , causing big problems . Jennifer learning to drive was a side plot in the show.
