@@pettee1979 Same thing with David Cassidy from Partridge Family TV Show. David was doing concerts & TV show at the same time. If you dont know Partridge Family David was selling out stadium concerts at age 20. Lucky guy a Millanare at age 23. David was one of those 70s teen Idol. There are so many things I love about this show and I still watch it. One thing I really appreciate is that they were able represent both political parties. They did it in a joking, but respectful manner and at the end of the day, they didn’t let it get in the way of their ultimate goal of the love they had for each other. I wish we could all do the same. I’ve lost family and friends just over my political party or not voting their way, without even a discussion and it’s heartbreaking.

This is my favorite sitcom of all time, tied with Married...With Children and Seinfeld. I love plenty sitcoms, from all decades, but these are my favorites! Michael J. Fox was also an amazingly talented actor DURING Family Ties. I knew Reagan dug the show. I remember Tom Hanks being on the show. I knew of Michael J. and Tracy being married. I even knew about Nick's proposed spinoff, lol! Ayyyyyyyy! I knew of Michael J.'s transportation woes. I remember River Phoenix being on there, and Wil. Corey, I don't remember. Must re-watch for him, lol! Remember Michael J. working on Family Ties and "Future" simultaneously, as well. The show ran from my 6th grade year through my senior year. Discovered it in 7th grade(don't know how I didn't learn of it earlier!), and watched faithfully for seasons 2-7. Didn't realize until just now that the ratings had dropped so heavily. Hated to see it go! Luckily, I have the complete series box set.
@gutenbird
@gutenbird 3 года назад
The ratings wasn’t the real reason the show ended. I saw a reunion show and Goldberg let it out the bag to the surprise and apparent consternation of the other actors that the network wanted another season but Michael J. Fox turned it down. You could tell Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter weren’t too thrilled to find this out. Goldberg probably had a bit of grudge for MJF turning it down as these last season are often big paydays.

It was a 1980's show, we were coming up into the 90's. It had a good run. Cast growing up, it ran it's course. I'm watching it for the past few days. I laugh at it quite a bit. Ellen and Alex. I watched her leave yesterday. I felt for Alex, trying to get over it gets a date with a perfectly fine young woman and he keeps trying to make her Ellen. Then he comes home after it ends ugly, with that song playing "What did you think.... I would do, at this moment" and he writes her in Paris. And today, Alex with Cortney Cox character (Laren???). I remember the Tom Hanks alcoholic uncle Ned episode back when it aired. That was a good episode. I never forgot it. My mom the loved the show, so it's one of those shows especially in the start. Yeah I like it and the theme song is yet another one of those 1970's 80's themes that brings me back to a time. Then the outro theme and you always knew what tag would be at the end of the outro of whatever show "sit Ubu sit.... Good dog" sometimes I'd be listen to shows from my bed. I'm watching it on Pluto now.

The car broke in half and the back seat passengers died. I could relate to what Alex was going through. No I wasn't supposed to be in the car, but some of us still had some of the same guilty thoughts. The ironic thing is that Justine was enrolled in my class so it was her school as well when this happened. The accident happened in 1983 so she was already enrolled with us at that time. Thinking about it now, maybe that had as effect on those episodes being written.

Michael got his first major start in the mid-1970s, starring in the Canadian TV series "Leo and Me". His first American efforts were "Midnight Madness" in 1980, and "Class of 1984", made in 1982. This was a show I was fanatical about so I know weird little wheels within wheels about it and pop culture at large surrounding the show at the time. Reading all the comments, I wanted to put in my two cents, even on the points people already made with a couple of specifics and clarifications, like... 1) Yes, Tom Hanks was just coming off his own recently cancelled sitcom when he became a real journeyman actor at this time, doing three episodes in total on Family Ties alone. But Bachelor Party he shot and was a box office hit, then came Splash, then in the same summer of '85, he had the one-two punch misfires of Volunteers and The Man with One Red Shoe, the former being where he met and co-starred with his future wife Rita Wilson. Then Nothing In Common and The Money Pit. Also, the movie Punchline came out the same year as Big. 2) Michael began filming Back to the Future in January of the new year 1985 just as everyone was returning to work after the holidays. He famously wouldn't have a day off again for five months as the production on BTTF was racing against the clock (!) to meet their July 3rd release date, that had already been pushed back to buy the production time. He got something closer to 2 hours of sleep a day and they had to film 7 days a week all the way through to make up time, but also take advantage of the weekend where Michael was free from Family Ties as they taped the show every Friday night. After they wrapped that week's episode, he would go straight to the BTTF set and be there from Friday night to Monday morning at dawn. Saturday and Sundays were the only days they had Michael available to shoot outside day scenes on location early on in the shoot. They shot the 50's town square scenes first on the Universal lot so they could do a lot of day for night shooting to get as much done as they could, pushing actual travel outdoor location work to later in the schedule when Family ties would wrap for their 3rd Season in mid-March. After that, the BTTF train went full steam ahead from mid-March to, yes, late June non-stop. Michael and the entire crew went into overtime penalities on a daily basis which was worked into the budget, already way in the hole for the $6 million they spent filming with Eric Stoltz and now reshooting all over again with Michael. It's insane that in the primitive days of analog technology for effects houses, the movie was able to work around the clock and get all it's special effects finished and look fantastic, score movie with an iconic theme and nobody on the cast or crew, but especially Michael J. don't collapse from exhaustion. Or worse. Five months of only 2 hours of sleep, stolen in the daylight of early morning because teamsters literally put a passed out Fox in a pick upved, drove him to his house, picked him up and put him in his bed of his house, and then waited 2 hours to wake him up and start it all over again. Personal theory: I read Rob Lowes memoirs about his time as a teen idol and movie star in the 80's where cocaine was always around, on every set. It was a different time and bygone culture about such things. But, everyone on movie sets basically did coke, casual or Charlie Sheen levels. Rob confesses he was the later. He doesn't come out and say it, but it's implied that his time on the democratic star bus to campaign for the democratic presidential hopeful there was a lot of insane partying going on and that coke and whiskey was their nightly matinee star diet, and the coke, as well as other things, was heavily involved in the 5 month brutal shooting schedule of early 1985 that was Michael's life to somehow get through it and pull it off. Michael at the time refered to this period as his: Year of living dangerously. I think this is why and had a darker connotation to it than anyone could've realized. It gets darker. A lot of studies can relate hard drug use and alcohol abuse in short, but concentrated periods of time can be a direct link to the physical deteriation symptoms that is Parkinson's decease. So, his Championship Season, as it were, where it looked like at the time, Michael flirted with disaster, tempted date and somehow seemed to cheat death, might have had a toll taken in the long term later on down the line. But, it's only a theory. Regardless, it is still a helluva an accomplishment and no one in the entertainment industry comes close to matching that crazy feat and it netting a movie classic out of it all. 3) The show was moved to Sunday nights in its 6 and 7th seasons where it did fall in the ratings, losing their cushy Cosby Show lead in, but they still won their time slot every week out of all the network shows both seasons and was regularly in the top 30. Toward the end of season 7, BTTF 2 was ramping up and filming actually had gone under way the last month of production on Family Ties so history repeated itself once more as Michael had to do double duty again, but BTTF 2 pushed any major scenes back till Family Ties wrapped up. But, the network wanted them to return for an 8th season. Everyone was ready to move on creatively, but it was Michael who ultimately pulled the plug, as he could only film a movie on Family Ties' summer hiatus the last year's and was desperately wanting to concentrate fully now on his film career so it was determined and Family Ties finished their series run with a special hour long send off episode that was the number one rated show for that week. They went out on top. Family Ties was not cancelled or suffering from any low ratings. 4) Michael J. Fox filmed a movie on his 1987 hiatus from Family Ties (between seasons 5 and 6) called Bright Lights, Big City. There was personal rejiggering behind the scenes and a change of director at the last minute, so a delay in filming and some parts for recast because some actors had prior commitments and couldn't wait around. One of those roles was his kind of potential love interest in the film. Michael immediately made phone calls to get Tracy Pollan in the movie and that part. It had been two years since they acted together and saw one another for her one single season of Family Ties in season 4 and he was still smitten with her, had heard she just broken up with her long term boyfriend of 7 years (Kevin Bacon!) and he didn't waste his opening and opportunity. The movie is largely forgotten, unfairly, but is remembered for being the film Michael and Tracy fell in love, got married a year later and had 4 children and still strong in 2020. 5) Michael is a serious savage. He can really go into beast mode, focus on the overwhelminly so called insurmountable odds of certain life challenges and rise up to them, face them down and do it with harm, wit and a really unique core inner strength where he seems to have a core foundation made from properties directly from the planet Krypton. He still my hero, moreso than ever before. And this show was, and still is, just bloody brilliant.

Weren’t the producers of BTTF interested in Michael even before they cast Eric? Did you see the reunion when Goldberg let it out the bag that the real reason the Family Ties was cancelled was because MJF turned it down. I have to call out the narrator for the Tom Hanks comments. He said Tom Hanks was barely known at all. He had a sitcom “Bosom Buddies” that aired for 3 years from 1980-1982. There wasn’t all these cable channels or internet back then. People watched what was on TV and the fact that it was on for 3 years means people actually watched his sitcom. He made an episode on Happy Days, which led to him teaming up with Ron Howard to make the hit “Splash” which was filmed in March of 1983. Splash cost $8 million and grossed almost $70 million. I’m not sure if the narrator just wanted to make a comment about Tom Hanks so he just threw something together real quick?! At least make it accurate
