Just to clear some things up, Gerrit van D. at Ruinerwold was holding his kids captive, he didn't kidnap them. As far as I know, he has been officially charged with "deprivation of liberty", but the case against him was put on hold last year because he suffered from a stroke. He was unable to form words or sentences and is recovering from brain damage. His four oldest kids however are suing him in their own case for alleged sexual abuse, hoping that their father will acknowledge his wrongdoings in order to get some sense of justice. The oldest son recounts how he had to wear his mother's clothes and sleep in the same bed as his father after she had died, and was sexually assaulted during that time. He also had to take his mother's role in the household as his dad believed her spirit now inhabited his body. It's completely insane. The Austrian handyman Josef B. is charged with conspiring with Gerrit and upholding the reign of terror after he became unable to do so on his own. He faces a possible 4 years in prison. Father Gerrit van D. was allegedly part of the Unification Church, or Moon sect, but added his own apocalyptical beliefs into the mix. He sought to repopulate the world with his family. The children are doing fine now. They've more or less succesfully reintegrated into society and have worked together on a book and documentary explaining their 9 year imprisonment at home.

Thats quite a narrow view on things that you present there MisterDutch. Its far from cut and dried and this case opens up a gigantic can of worms, wrt proof, ethics, the role of the state wrt children and rights, etc etc. As far as i know, the case is stopped (geseponeerd) and imo very unlikely to be re opened (as for above reasons). Officially, bc Gerrit suffered a stroke years ago and is unable to speak and therefor cannot stand trial. He resides in a care facility. He is also sueing the state for 50400 Euro, of which the prosecutors said he has no right to, bc of allegations. In NL, reparations are only given AFTER a trial and people have been determined they cannot have been guilty of such crime, or the crime did not occur. You do not get compensation otherwise; so for instance you are let go, bc of lack of evidence, is not right for compensation. The evidence has to prove you did not do it, could not have done it, or crime did not occur at all. And thats rare. Also the youngest 5 children at some point stated they wished they got back to the farm with their dad. Its not all that easy to judge and even if they do not wish to go back now (which i dont know), you may argue that similarly they are under the influence of other caretakers now, which have a different influence than the father had. But its still influence. So there you see how difficult ethical problem this is. Same applies to whose children they are; the state or the parents? The allegations of abuse; same thing. The state does not apply physicla force? Hitting with sticks? Yes, the state does... But the law says the state is allowed to do so, but parents do not. Ethically, there is no difference. So who is the state to judge? Thats a regular theme btw, but all the other angles on this, also wrt religion, make this extremely complex and im sure the judges in this case are happy the man cant talk and the case is stopped. Note: this is not about my opinion, but about ethics, religion, psychology, law, state, etc. I merely try to show how difficult this is and do not take a stand in any way to justify this mans convictions, or the state.

Apparently a neighbour of my friend who lives in a very small community had a bunch of kids running around their house all the time, but they didn't really see adults as much, aside from them coming and going. One day they went over there and walked just inside the door to the kitchen for whatever, idk what it was, but they could tell there were a bunch of people in one bedroom in the back. They were trying to be quiet but my friend could still hear them. They thought it was weird as they stood in the kitchen alone while the neighbour went into the back room. They saw a baby car seat and what they thought was a doll in it, on the floor under the table. Turns out it was a baby, the people were smoking crack, and had just left the baby alone. They were there for at least 5 minutes and the baby didn't even move. When the kids were taken and given to a relatively nearby relative, they said the baby didn't cry and went to the doctor, who told them that it had likely been so neglected that it had given up crying because no one ever came. Absolutely gut wrenching. You really don't know what's going on under your nose.

I have to wonder if the case of the man who disappeared in the hospital could possibly be related to the strangest situation I’ve ever experienced, when my 18 month old grandson suddenly disappeared right from under me while we were alone in my tiny 500 sq/ft deadbolt locked house. We were in the kitchen, and he was standing on a chair helping me shell boiled eggs, his job was to crush the shells in a mortar, with a pestle for the garden. I turned, walked ten feet away, still in his sight, turned back, and he was gone. Stunned, I started yelling for him searching everywhere, even ended up unlocking the deadbolt, and looking outside. Understanding he couldn’t even be outside, I ran back inside, and started literally tearing the house apart looking, but he was absolutely gone. I was so panicked I was just ready to call 911, when I heard a whimper. Since I couldn’t tell where it was coming from, I kept calling for him, following the sound, until I realized the whimpers were coming from above me, in the attic. Relieved, stunned, and totally confused, I opened the door to the attic, and there he sat, up there in the pitch black attic. I had to move several hundred glass mason jars, cans of food, canning/cooking equipment, and baskets of winter vegetables, to get up there. This took a few minutes, and the entire time he just sat there perfectly still, and silent, blankly staring at me. Once I reached him, and picked him him, he dropped two fistfuls of eggshells on the attic floor. After I got him out of the attic, I asked him how on earth he got up there, and he said “a deer bunny”. He was speech delayed, so that’s literally all he would say when questioned. I asked him where was the deer bunny now? He took my hand, walked me back to the open attic door, and put his finger to his lips as we approached, and said “shhhh”. But as soon as he looked up into the stairwell, he became visibly scared, and backed away. Well, I searched the attic, and of course didn’t find a deer bunny, but did notice that oddly enough, the only crushed eggshells to be found were at the counter, and up in the attic itself where I found him. After replacing everything, my son, and I tested him, to see if he could even open the old heavy attic door, or get up the stairwell, and just as we already knew, he wasn’t even close to physically capable of doing either. Bizarre as this sounds, it 100% happened, and it still perplexes me, because it was physically impossible. It also terrified me. I was worried sick about the “deer bunny” coming back, taking him again, and returning him outside in the busy road, on the roof, or just never bringing him back. *of note The attic door was located in the kitchen between my grandson standing on the chair, and where I walked too, so I was 10’ from my grandson, 5’ from the attic door, and both were in my line of sight, when he disappeared.

You can still climb with a leg and 2 arms, getting up there would take more upper body strength than lower so you wouldn't need to use your legs much besides getting a knee up. @@effaitch7629 from the media in The Netherlands (i am from The Netherlands, and there is a documentary airing right now, 4 episodes, where the 4 oldest children are giving their side of this story). But 1 daughter and 2 sons. And the news of the “fact” that they lied about their ages is nowhere to be found in the dutch media (as far as i can see, i tried to find it after watching this video). In an article written march of this year it states that the ages of the childeren at that time were 18-25. Police do not charge anyone with anything. Prosecutors do. Police do the investigating TO A POINT; when they have enough evidence, they take it to the prosecutor who decides to issue a warrant. This is with an investigation only. Police can and do arrest people on sight, but they have to present evidence within 72 hours to a prosecutor to determine charges, if any. Please, if you are going to condemn the justice system, learn how it works. People screaming about how police are ineffective (there are some----but it's very, very few) do not understand that the police are told what they can and cannot do re crime in the community. By the city council, the Mayor, the other governing bodies around them. There are laws the police have to follow also (no parking outside a bar and picking off drivers for DUI for instance). Search and seizure laws, incrimination laws and so much more. The ones to have anger towards in this case is the prosecutor/judge who decided to drop all charges because the evidence was circumstantial. San Francisco had a recall of it's District Attorney who was in charge of that case because he was notorious for not bringing charges for violent crimes. He was discharged from his job. SF is notorious for it's bad prosecution (not police) and allowing violent crime to run rampant. Even their own mayor went national saying that what was happening could not be tolerated or accepted---yet it continues to this day in spite of change of District Attorney and prosecutors. And why homeless and criminals are taking over the city. Wish you the best in your week ahead, and hope you have happy days :D
