This is the 2nd video in a 3 part series. The series displays our process of splitting a log, that is too big for the mill, with black powder (previous video) and then sawing each half on the mill. This video features us milling the 1st half in real time, although parts were edited out to fit nearly 40 minutes of work into a 15 minute video.

I really enjoy how efficient they are, not just in what they do, but how they fully utilize every piece of wood that comes off the mill. There's commercial grade and then the odd-sized craft grade pieces. This is a well run business.

Why are those wide boards ripped? Are they worth more left in their wide lengths? Thanks.
@LindasSawmillCinema
@LindasSawmillCinema 9 лет назад
Chris Albrecht Depending on defects (rot, knots, cracks, etc.), occasionally the board must be ripped to get more out of it or to raise the grade of the board. The wide boards to which you are referring, had a lot of rot on half, so we gained more length of usable lumber on one half by ripping it into 2 boards. This lumber is to be graded and sold wholesale, so grade matters a great deal. On many of our custom saw jobs, the grade doesn't matter, and in that case we wouldn't have ripped the boards, but left the rot on. Thanks for watching and commenting! Linda

Just a little suggestion. When you use your tape dont let it slam closed catch it with your index finger. They will last a lot longer. When it slams they tend to lengthen the rivets because as you know they arent tight so you butt against or use taught on end and get correct measurement but after a month of slamming it can cause it to lengthen up as much as a quarter of an inch. Also did you need a permit to blast it or not just because of black powder?
@LindasSawmillCinema
@LindasSawmillCinema 9 лет назад
byrysh Absolutely, I use my index finger to guide the tape closed. Our sons were born without an index or middle finger to catch it with, though, so they don't have much choice. Good suggestion. Thanks for watching! Linda

Thanks for the reply. Another question is about the laser that's used for the blade. After seeing it on your Wood Mizer shine the cut ahead of the blade got me wanting that type of luxury. I haven't been able to find anything on them from any of the sawmill makers. Where did y'all get this laser line or how was it made and set up? We don't have a board edger now but when we get one I would love to have lasers showing blade placement. It would save me so many cuts when slabbing a fresh log that's being squared up. Personally I hate waste and try to get at least a 1 x 4 out of the edge under each slab. A lot of the times when trying to not waste the log I end up wasting a cut because of not being able to know exactly where the blade will cut. Your laser clears up the cut before the cut begins. Oh I truly love how y'all have laid out your opperation. I have longed to set up our mill in a vacant building for a long while myself.
@LindasSawmillCinema
@LindasSawmillCinema 9 лет назад
+Phil Lowman Wood-Mizer sells a laser for their mills. I don't know if it can be used on other brand mills. The laser manufacturer is Cemar Electro, inc. They should be able to get you set up. Thanks for watching! Linda

Hey Linda, I'm watching you guys work in big screen so I must admit when that scrap came flying across the camera I ducked! Ha ha! I have a timber frame project in the offing soon. I'm unfortunately in Scotland so won't be able to buy from you but I wondered if you could help me with an idea of a economical size of logs to buy. I need 6"x8" timbers. Cheers! Great work as always btw.
@LindasSawmillCinema
@LindasSawmillCinema 9 лет назад
rory lobban Hilarious! I thought the flying scrap was kind of fun on a 22" screen, but with a big screen it would be a BIG surprise! Timber frame timbers need the pith centered, preferably out of straight logs larger than 12" diameter (small end inside bark). Thanks for watching and commenting! Linda

Hi Linda, I notice you are wearing eye protection as well as respirators - is this because the seasoned wood produces very fine sawdust or is the wood an irritant itself? What do you do with all the edges/waste/saw-dust? And, maybe a weird question, how much electricity does your shop consume per day? Very cool to see a family all taking part in a business.

Well, you did it again..... another great video! That is some fine looking lumber. Can you guess at how old the tree was? Am I correct in thinking the reason to keep rolling the log is because of the grain configuration? I have to say this again; you all are like a "well-oiled machine". Like the gentleman from Germany said "Looks like hard work" and I know it is, but you all make look easy. What is the stack to the right of the forklift? I would guess it to be sticks for "sticking" lumber, but I'm not sure. Keep up the good work and the videos coming. Enjoy life and may God continue to bless you.

Herb Houston Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed the video We did not count the growth rings, so I can't say for sure, but I would guess close to 100 years. +John Moore A LOT! I don't usually talk about monetary issues, but the sawmill itself costs over $50,000. There is plenty more in support equipment. We have been in business 23 years. We sell lumber to all kinds of buyers; big mills, brokers, woodworkers, and hobbyists alike. Thanks for watching! Linda

+LindasSawmillCinema I was under the impression from watching the videos that you'll had not been in business that long as you didn't look the age part; ( the only way I now to say it). I really enjoyed the videos and it look like you'll had it all in one sock as we used to say in the country where I was raised. again good luck with you business and God bless. Jjohn

Admitedly, I don't know details, but as a retired aerospace manufacturing engineer, I see a couple things that would perhaps reduce personnel movement or save time. PM me and I'd be happy to share. Overall, high marks for crew focus and efficiency.

As a 30 year health and safety professional... I love the PPE use. Top shelf for this kind of operation, especially compared to the Asian mill videos. You have some good ergo hazard control but I may be able to help you with more, and with some production flow and dust control tips as well. Since this vid is 3+ years old, you may have already done some of them before now. I'm not a salesperson, just an auditor....

I don't know why I'm seeing this 3+ years later but great teamwork...Btw, if you can find det cord, it'll make a much cleaner and straighter explosion so you may not have to lose excess wood...Just a thought...

Good teamwork! What is your electric bill cost a month? I just bought a Baker 3640E and trying to get AEP of Ohio to run power to my mill. It's 240 volts. I've always enjoyed your videos.

Wonderful energy and invocation. Not a criticism however "Lean" flow would minimize steps and increase efficiency.

If this sawmill was runned and managed by a guy, it will be full of sawdust waist deep and not so spec and span...🤔🙄😂😇👍👌👊

Nathan, that.was classic crotch. what a beautiful specimen. the second and third cuts that you did have perfect fiddle back grain under the leaning limb. There was beautiful beautiful feathering down the center. The flaming grain patterns were to die for! A Classic video. Your shots from aloft took my breath away! Do you get them from your own flying or do you purchase them. The altitude on the last was amazing. I could watch those flights for hours! Peaceful and serene. Thank you for taking the effort to share these gems!!!

I see you're all about efficiency so Id like to recommend a couple of things. Make marks on the outfield table of the edger rather than having to pull a tape out everytime as well as the roller tables and bring the other wood scrap bin up by the other scrap bundle saving some leg work as well as time. Love watching your videos and how everybody works together, there's definitely no moss growing on you or your crew! :-)

when you split the log with black powder did you drill holes or cut down the center with a chain saw and the put the powder in? did yo use a friction primer or just a fuse to set the powder off? Thanks for a very outstanding video. by the way what state is this taking place in? the two young men that was in the video; did they have on military ball caps?

We shy away from giving advice, especially when using dangerous tools and supplies, but I do have a video that shows more. Please read the description and comments to glean information that maybe useful. You made a tremendous amount of lumber from that log. I am surprised that there was not much shattered wood. The multiple cut autofeed table saw is fantastic. I would like to learn more about it. Do you have a collection of bullets, bolts, nails, and other foreign objects found in logs? As usual, a tremendous wood milling ballet!

Not a great idea to toss sticks across the shop when all that is needed is a scrap pail.
