I"m not even English but Dutch, but my aunt lived in New Brighton, so came to Wirral several times, including Birkenhead. I miss maybe the most famous of all, actress Patricia Routledge, born in Birkenhead in 1929 , the legendary Hyacinth Bouquet. And the world famous soprano Valerie Masterson (born 1937), those two come first to mind.

WW1 poet Wilfred Owen was born close to Oswestry but some of his childhood was spent in Birkenhead and Tranmere. Part of his education was at the Birkenhead Institute.

Orchestral Manouvres in the Dark (OMD) 80's pop group were Hoylake people. I believe the two lead members of the band went to Caldy Grammar School.

Half Man Half Biscuit? Though I suspect there not that well known once you leave the peninsular. Ted and Kate Robbins? Jimmy & Lisa Tarbuck? Ian St John - still these folk moved to Wirral so I'm not sure they count. Mike McGear(McCartney). Most of the Brookside cast....Ok I'll leave it there for now because you could count most of the Liverpool and Everton Squad too. One final mention - Stella Rimington has lived on and off the Wirral over the years.

Lewis Collins went to Birkenhead Institutes School for Boys Tollemache Road. I seen his famous cigar Guillotine because I had the same form teacher as him.

Sandy Irvine (street nr TRFC named after him), 1st to climb Everest ?, - lost very near top with Mallory (also has a street named nr TRFC), no flag found on Mallory, thought Irvine had a camera too, but no flag suggests they made it to the summit but were lost on descent.

Steve Cummings the Olympic cyclist. Lived in heswall and went to calday. I used to mock him for riding pedal cycles when I rode motorbikes. He used to ride a motorbike with me and was a crazy bastard on that. They I lost touch and he boomed into the big leagues. Nice guy. Wish I'd kept in touch.

Peter Davenport, born Birkenhead, played for Cammel Lairds, Nottingham Forrest (won TWO European Cups), 'Salford United' and England (another Birkonian to wear the number Nine Shirt for his country), now a school teacher I understand, like his Brother Paul Davenport.

Bill Davies who owned the Grand National race course, from 1973 to 1983 and made news around the world in 1983 when selling the course in 1983. Lived on the Wirral from the 1960’s for a number of decades.

@@merseydave1 Ellesmere is in Shropshire, Ellesmere Port is on the Wirral which starts at the River Gowy in the East and Flookers Brook in the West, The Wirral peninsula should not be confused with the Metropolitan district of Wirral.

@@merseydave1 I don't know where you were educated but the whole of the Wirral peninsula was in Cheshire untill 1974 when the northern half was put into the newly formed Merseyside. As I said before, don't confuse the Metropolitan borough of Wirral with the Wirral peninsula.

Not exactly a person, but 'The Birkenhead Tapestry works ' made tapestry's for the Queen. It was in the north end by the church when it was knocked down illchester square flats were built then those flats have been demolished. My aunty worked there.

The tapestry works was Arthur H Lee and Sons. It was opposite Ilchester Square. My Dad was the Dye House Manager there, until it closed in 1970.

Went to Tollemache Road School with my Dad, Tollemache was later to become the Birkenhead Boys School. He also worked with Paul O'Grady on Construction Sites for just over a year.

You focused primarily upon entertainers and media fodder. How about delving further back in time and highlighting some notable intellectuals or people who engaged in something other than entertainment / sport? Birkenhead and Rock Ferry have a wealth of history.
