When I discovered Fanny in the early 70s, none of my friends liked them. Nonetheless, I purchased 3 of their albums. 50 years later I feel vindicated. Rock on Fanny!
There are so many bands that I say i wish i could go back and hear them again for the first time. Well, I'm 43 and I've just discovered this band for myself, and I'm loving every minute of every song.
Me too I was seven in 1971 when they were popular - i never heard of them! I was too young I guess! So cool Love the drummer ALice De Buhr! She rocks! Love her long hair in early clips- amazing! Kim
Thought I knew something about 60's and 70's rock . What an ignorant idiot I must be to have only heard of this wonderful band in 2024 . Up there with the best on every level . I am not worthy x
It's odd to me how suddenly so many people are discovering Fanny (me too btw). For once, the infamous RU-vid algorithm does something good and leads us to some overlooked gold.
I'm on that boat that says "how is it possible that this is the first time I have heard them?" I'm 60+ years old... and I listen to music alot. They're good!
She is AMAZING & the only bad thing about the documentary was her NOT in it😢She’s the reason I love them, drummer is next level good & the sisters are great…”but” Nickey is the magic ingredient!✊🏾
@@chrishubbell3313 Yea, I agree. She has said that although she is very proud of what the band accomplished, she has absolutely no interest in ever returning to that time even for an interview. She no longer even uses her old name - that person is dead to her.
Now I’ve watched this 12 times, & my favorite part is where she says “You know what my game is,” which isn’t in the Randy Newman original & changes the nature of the song. But my second-favorite part is where she loses control of the lisp & says “It thcared me tho, i woke up thcreamin'!” She’s trying so hard, but she lets loose, loses control & goes full Daffy Duck. It’s adorable.
My profound apologies to Fanny. I and everyone else, I guess was so wound up in Led Zeppelin, Beatles and Stones that I never got to hear you and you may have been the best of the bunch. Better late than never. Thank you so much for the work you did.
I'm going to disagree. Even this song , although it's somewhat balanced musically the constant use of " that dream" is annoying and the squelching and odd guitar are in need of a producer
It's not your fault. They had 5 studio albums and they all kind of sucked and never got airplay on the radio. I don't think they were even allowed on the radio in Europe with their name having a very different meaning across the pond. Bad marketing, bad management, bad record production. But kiiiiiiiiler band! Their live performances are proof!
I think they are great. But don't get delusional. Look at their competition. They were given every chance- a major record label contract, toured as opening act for many great bands, etc. Listen to them for a week. Then walk away for a a week or so and see what you remember emotionally. It will become obvious why they simply didn't make it. They were superb musicians- yes- but there was nothing very unique or memorable about their music. There just. wasn't. Sorry to be an onion head. I like them alot....but they couldn't compete with LZ, The Doors, Procol Harem, Cream, The Who.,Black Sabbath... even second tier bands like Grand Funk Railroad are more memorable.
It's the crime of the century that these ladies never had a hit, shame on the entire fkn world. We used to listen to all their albums when I was in high school in Vermont and Vermont ain't exactly in the mainstream so where the hell were all of you?!
Nickeys' Vocal power and sold out energy reminds me of Janis Joplin! The Band is incredible. Love the Bass Guitar Lines, Drummer and Guitarist are great.
Fabulous...I was in a band with Nicky/Annie over in Eire in the nineties. Believe it or not I was the lead singer !! Nicky taught me so much. What a musician she is. Hope she is ok. X
I love how heavy they sounded live. That outro guitar solo is killer. Any Fanny live video is like a clinic on how to look, act, and sound like a real rock and roll band.
Excellent song. This band was overlooked and underrated in the 70s. Living in a small town in Texas as a little kid back then wishing more girls were rock musicians, I didn't know they existed. If I had I would have scraped up the $$ somehow to buy every album they released. I'm sure other girls and boys would have too. Thanks to RU-vid, multiple generations can now discover and enjoy their songs and talent.
I'm a huge Randy Newman fan. I always felt like this song needed to be rocked more than the version on Sail Away (which is of course brilliant). But this feels like it's the way the song is supposed to be in a way. Like this is its full potential.
This band was just perfect in all the aspects of perfomance , the voice of the singer and pianist Nickey Barclay is just magnificent and the way she plays is superb not to mention The others June Millington guitar playing the emotions she conveys and adds rage and mystery to the "Dream " subject that Nickey is telling about , Jean Millington bass lines are spot on as usual she was also a great singer wonderful woman too and last but not least Alice de Buhr astonishing drum power she had , so coordinated and tight with the rest ,In my opinion They could have been the best band in the history of Rock , hope someday they will get inducted to Rock and roll hall of fame , long life to Fanny girls !
@@greglechowski5030 Brie has Filipina heritage just like Jean/June (she's sometimes mistaken for Jean in fact). Despite the hair subterfuge you are indeed seeing Alice here (her and June's departures were fairly close together).
Their was THE LIVERBIRDS the first all girl rock band from ENGLAND in the 1960s,they toured all over ENGLAND AND EUROPE They released albums and singles, they had a cool sound
Last night I had a dream You were in it, I was in it with you, oh yeah, Everyone that you know Everyone that I know was in that dream I saw a vampire, I saw a ghost Everybody scared me, you scared me the most In the dream I had last night The dream I had last night In that dream Last night I had a dream Scared me so, you know I woke up screaming Saw all of my in-laws, a whole lot of outlaws In that dream I saw the wolfman Jack, saw the mummy too Man, they was a mean bunch But they was nice compared to you In the dream I had last night The dream I had last night In that dream, oh yeah Started out in a barnyard just bout' sundown Everyone was laughing You were lying on the ground Singing... Honey, can you tell me what your name is?” Honey, can you tell me what your name is?” I said, “tell me, tell me, what your game is” You know what my game is sweetheart In the dream I had last night In the dream I had last night That's right boy I saw a vampire, {Ahhh} I saw a ghost {Ahhh} You know, everybody scared me You scared me the most In the dream I had last night The dream I had last night In that dream {Dream} Oh, the dream I had last night, In that dream {Dream} *Let's get back home* - *not sure* In the dream I had last night In that {Dream} Fanny will always Rock!!!! Thank you for the great music!!!
Loving tbis slightly more Glam Rock era Fanny - always loved the keyboard players work. Grest band whose beauty is matched by their talent. Galling that 20th century sexism probably prevented a wider audience getting to enjoy such sheer brilliance. Thanks for posting. They are fantastic, aren't they?
Holy shit! I saw Randy Newman on the "Sail Away" tour, and Fanny in 1972, but this combination of Fanny taking a Randy song to the max is the best yet!
So many tiny-minded men would say "oh, men recorded the music, and these 'girls' are just pretending to play." Obviously, ignorance wrapped in jealousy -- this band was terrific!
Look at the other bands in that time period. This band is fine, but they aren't close to the top and there were many at the top. This song is also a cover.
@@stickman1742 Completely wrong , they were on the same level as many of the other bands of that period but they were Women an suffered from the stigma of that period where many thought an all female band was an oxymoron .
To answer the question as to why Fanny, with all their talent, didn’t become a bigger band back in the 70’s? It can be summed up in one word: SEXISM! 😠😠😩😩
The last 2 weeks have been very sad. Because 2 weeks ago a gaping hole appeared in my life, when I realized that for over 50 years I missed out on Fanny‘s music. Why is such a band so unknown?
Fanny was a really good band. Taking the gender equation out of it….they were one of the best rock bands of the early 70s….Not as amazing as the top bands like Deep Purple, Zeppelin etc etc ….but better than a lot. But for me the outlier was Nickey. She just was on another level. I know stardust when I see it and that girl was the real deal. She had what very few did. With the right direction and collaborator I think she could have been the female equivalent of say Elton …John. This is a musician that earned the respect of Leon Russell and Joe Cocker. She had IT. Every time I watch this I just am floored. She’s worth a deep dive of listening and exploration. Easily one of the greatest musicians of the 70s Fanny was really good , but she was on another plane.
She did an interview a while back, it's in article form and she's truly one of a kind. For better or worse she's extremely honest when talking about the origins of the band, her own biases, and her view of the world, she's a fascinating woman.
Fly Johnson 0 seconds ago So this is basically in the vibe of My Guitar Gently weeps but it is so good it makes the aforementioned seem like a junior high kid wrote it. Plus that bridge man ….that’s songwriting. That’s character. You have mini Janis on vox, yet she’s also Elton and Joe cocker …..sexy as hell ….and 3 women that are practically as good as Black Sabbath was at the time….what’s not to love. Easily one of the best 70s live songs in any genre.
