England rugby great Will Greenwood joins Martin Devlin on It's Only Sport, offering his thoughts on the two-test series between his home nation and New Zealand down under. The All Blacks were far from convincing and were pushed all the way by England, but the hosts still managed victory in both tests by a combined eight points.
Despite his former side now losing three of their last four tests, Greenwood explains why he and other English rugby fans are optimistic and how the team is developing under coach Steve Borthwick, the defence and physicality they brought to the New Zealand matches, and more.

Martin, can you please get Murray Mexted back on regularly. Him and Justin were a good balance i reckon. The loose forward situation within the AB’s (and more broadly NZ rugby) at the moment is quite interesting. I feel he’s a great person to be analyzing it. The forwards as a whole really. Thanks in advance.

England - the perennial seekers and claimants of moral victories and optimism from defeat.😂😂😂 "Could've, should've, would've won"; "...agonisingly close", "fiercely competitive for 60mins." Blah, blah, blah...🤔😤 Borthwick's lot is getting better at failing to close out tight games; and 'developing' youth and untapped potential is not a reliable indicator of future success.

Every team that is not winning every single game - ie all teams - talk in these terms when they are not winning or playing well. Including NZ under Fozzie and SÃ under the pre Rassie regime. Such a silly comment

I’d rather be vaguely optimistic in defeat watching a team that is light years better than even a few months ago and will only get better, rather than the deep, unforgiving gloom that descends on AB supporters when they lose occasionally. England fans haven’t had much to shout about for years and world footy is better with England and even Aussie improving.

England came to NZ and should have expected at least 1 win in the series. NZ had a complete change in coaching setup, had limited preparation time and some key players had not played for a month. You can sugar coat the performances and take positives (and there were plenty) and make excuses, but in reality they lost 2-0 to a vulnerable All Blacks side. While it is harsh to call the tour a failure for the English, it was, by no means a success. And to be fair, despite winning the series 2-0, the All Blacks should not be happy with their performances. Error ridden at times and lets not even talk about the lineout.

Yeah, but you’re conveniently missing out a lot to suit a narrative - such as many players for England had less then 10 caps (some making their debut), England have had a long season and will be fatigued, it was really the first time with Marcus smith in control and could play his game, England are building from being in a pretty terrible state…. It was by no means a failure

@@Trajan2401 yeah it is an excuse, but AB fans can’t make their excuses (new coaching set up blah blah), and then get annoyed when we use our excuses 😂 The classy AB response would be, that the AB did very well considering the circumstances against a very up and coming English team… it’s frustrating the way that some AB fans are putting the England team down to elevate themselves (when it’s been a long time since we have had an England team to be proud of)
