@@Unworshipediety I mean... _There _*_were_*_ elements or it in those chanting bits heard near the end of that original trailer for Dune: Prophecy..._
@@iwyt3995 I don't know, I'm not hating on it yet. Fraternities & Sororities are always gonna have very similar vibes. Manoids tend to bang there chest and Femoids tend to chant. It's the way of the world bra. I'm gonna choose to be delusional until the show kills me first! 😍
Dune adaptations only work if the scale is right, and that scale has to be epic, unprecedented, larger than life. Villeneuve got it right, and I think David Lynch got it mostly right, too. Your point is well taken. 👍
Lynch's Dune gets dumped on alot (and deservedly so in many cases) but the costumes and some of the sets like the Imperial throne room still stand out in memory. It had a weird retro-futuristic vibe that evoked the novel in my mind. They definitely got the ornithopter wrong and I don't remember the bonkers cat/rat contraption Thufir needed to survive in the novel.
I think the thing behind making this show was they say a chance for “woman strong” storytelling. That might be as much thought as was put into this. That doesn’t bode well at all
If they're willing to go big, with Swordmasters, Mentats, Guild/CHOAM, Ix, etc., and maybe show the development of the abilities of the Bene Gesserit (Voice, prana bindu, control over bodily systems, truthsaying... maybe with some trial-and-error on each), it could be good. But, I'm very skeptical.
”Fans”? Fans of what? It’s based on one of the Brian Herbert books as far as I understand, does anyone care about those? They’re fan fiction. The trailer doesn’t look interesting at all, I just see no reason to watch it.
I’m passing on this one. Not interested. I’ve read almost all of the books, including the expanded works. Butlerian Jihad would’ve been more interesting and timely.
A series about the Butlerian Jihad would have been about the KJA/BH abominations. If they'd gone the route of following what Frank implied it was in the books--i.e. a war of ideologies fought by human beings--it would have been interesting, but there's no way that would happen. Maybe something about CET and the writing of the OC Bible? That could almost feel like a historical drama on the level of the Pillars of the Earth. Or maybe even during the reign of Shakkad the Wise and the discovery of the life-extending properties of the spice? Maybe they could even--and this might be insane--involve CHOAM?
@@PhillieCheezeKC Um, actually (heh heh), i was disappointed that Dune Part 2 left out some of the stuff that Lynch's Dune did pretty well, like the Navigators, space travel, the Mentats, the Emporer, and Alia (yes, i liked Lynch's Alia-- so creepy). Villenueve's Part 2 was a bit of a disappointment to me.
Yeah, the scale has to be big... really big. Royal courts throughout history have contained thousands of individuals; courtiers, royal retinue, household staff, servants, nobility, clergy, personal bodyguards, ceremonial palace guards, emissaries from other royal houses, diplomats from other lands, etc, etc. Imagine then the scale of a galactic sized empire. There are supposed to be over 10,000 worlds in Dune. Denis Villeneuve got the scale of Dune mostly right. To portray such a world with just a dozen or so main characters would be totally inadequate and totally unconvincing...
brian herbert is to FRANK herbert what ben stiller is to JERRY stiller and what james belushi is to JOHN belushi--NOT THE SAME!!! NOT EVEN CLOSE!!! on the other hand, jessica barden has come a long way since 'hanna'. and dune is still my favorite sci-fi universe. so i will watch this show and hope for the best.
The reason the dune movies worked so well is because the Director is a master of his craft. For the show they need to match his work or at the very least have expert world building and character writing
I don't have much hope for anything coming out of Hollywood anymore. The stuff they are making seems directed at children they hope to prepare for the next stage of "Progress" rather than the adults. It's even difficult to look back on a lot of the movies I grew up with now because I can see right through what they were doing but as a kid I didn't know any better and was mezmoried by anything they put out.
It always bugs me in sci-fi or fantasy when there’s a huge gap of time between entries but there’s no changes to fashion, architecture or culture. As you pointed out it just seems like that is happening with this series.
A Dune 'soap opera' might work...if the writers are **extraordinarily** clever. Even then, it'd be such a veer away from the whole 'grand narrative' stage of the novels that, even if well written, it might be a huge miss.
Frankly, if the producers go for a gritty science-fiction show exploring the 'Dune' universe, I'll be watching. HOWEVER, if they go for some preachy, lesbian and transgender fueled soap-opera that basically tells the male viewers to 'F-off,' then I will definitely pass on it.
I do hope they learned some lessons watching Star Wars & MCU shows fall on their asses. So in that aspect, I think this will look better than some may think. But yeah, I was kinda missing the wierdo crazy stuff that wasn't included in the movies... I'm hoping they expand on things with this adaption and it finds it's own voice before the season is up.
All the elements you speak of, that would help build the world, are not necessarily conducive to the girlbossing trope. That's why. I don't like being such a cynic, but pattern recognition goes a long way in discerning things. One of the most beloved IPs, that just had a massive upsurge in popularity thanks to the new films, AND has a faction of witchy women that manipulate the whole galaxy? Be honest, it was just a matter of time before the likes of K.Kennedy and her peers got their slimy mitts on it, and we all knew it. That being said, you being a girl and raising these questions earned you an instant sub.
I was not very impressed with the first trailer however the second trailer has peaked my interest, Flamel is an amazing actor and I'm starting to think this might be the surprise hit of the year.
I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm willing to give it the necessary time it'll need to establish itself story wise. That said the time crunch that is built in to the production might tempt those making the series to devolve into a "Michael Bay" version of a Dune franchise.
'necessary time to establish itself story wise.' game of thrones accomplished that in the first 15 minutes of the very first episode. so did 'the wire'. of course, these were two of the best tv shows of all time--if not THE best two.
Meh. Not really expecting this to be good honestly. Modern Hollywood does not have a good track record. Also the more I watch the new dune movies, the more I dislike them.
I’m gonna disagree on this, Elaine. Herbert created an unrealistic empire, that requires a major retcon from 1965 thinking. The Corrinos ruled for 10k years. No way that would ever happen, there would be multiple dynasties, as per history. He wanted to emphasize stagnation, and this new show being similar to the movies supports that. I see villenues’s influence. The suits must be worshipped as well, and their terror of losing money must be placated: stick with what worked with the films. Female-centric shows are now mandatory, as per my prior rant on post-modernism, as most writers out of college are women. I support that, but I watched the 4th season of Star Trek: Discovery, which was basically an endless series of psychotherapy sessions. Blech. I guess that’s what most of the audience wants.
It’s science fiction: it does not have to be realistic. I disagree about wanting to retcon 1965 thinking. So what if the Corrinos ruled for so long; that was part of the point Herbert was trying to make: stagnation, fascism, etc. To retcon would be to take away Herbert’s agenda in writing his works in the first place. I don’t think most people want what happened with discovery; it’s what the suits and the corporate woke administrators want.
Studios have a huge problem with time jumps of this magnitude. Imagine only 2000 years ago what we looked like. A 10000 year gap would make a civilization unrecognizable. Not much hope for this.
They are just after the Butlarian jihad and suffered billions of deaths. This is way way early in the rebuilding of the Empire. So be chill, the spacing guild and the mentats are being built as organisations at the same time. Perhaps season one is the BG’s, season 2 is the mentats, season 3 is the guild, season 4 CHOAM.
The acolyte has killed any hope of this getting a fair shot. This was all developed during the woke end times. As you said, the Bene Gesserit operate in the background, they would have been a great device to fully explore the universe and the factions. They are at the forefront for this series because girl bosses get it done 🤡. Yeah the Guild needs explaining in depth as the dune universe doesn’t function without them.
Ive always looked at the bene gesserit as sexy god tier jedi. Focusing on the politics and their conniving tendencies just bores me. I don’t like seeing idiots try to write smart people. It’s exhausting. I second the focus should be on the machine war. Talk about a rich story!
Once again you have pretty damn good insight into what fans of the Dune Universe want to see in my humble opinion. Which means great analysis of what is known so far about the New Show itself (nice digging). I probably need to argue with you one of these days about SOMETHING (I'll think of some kinda drama). But you make it almost impossible since you do such a good job. Keep it up. Great video.
Looks like Game of Thrones with all that british accent and political anglo garbage, Im keeping my expectations incredibly low, like you said the aesthetic looks bad, looks like a cheap knock off brand of high quality clothing, like bootleg
If the story is good enough and it gets a second season, hopefully the show will get a larger budget. Game of Thrones looked sufficient in the first season but the budget grew and grew util will got the incredible effects and sets from the later seasons.
i would be more concerned that DEI insurgency will be at the forefront of this series, such a pity for a generation that doesn't read. expect to see over focus on gender bending, homosexuality, sub saharan african overrepresentation. miscast favoritism at the cost of correct casting. i'm already nauseous from the smell and it hasn't even been shat yet...
tv shows are so hard to get right....especially scale this is due to a number of reasons but mainly budget. I think when i watch this show i will be judging it on its story over visuals. This is the same for Dune mini series.
I am not worried about this at all. This series still looks very much inspired by the Denis' Dune movies and a smaller scale is to be expected with budget that needs to be stretched further.
I am happy they didn't do Butlerian Jihad timeline, incredibly tired of "AI is cold logic and will kill us because we are the virus" spiel. I want to see pseudoreligious mindfuck of Bene Gesserit, same with mentats, their conditioning would be interesting to explore.
