In the first HP book, when Harry is getting his school supplies one of the books that he needs for Hogwarts is Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander.

If you're still wondering, Newt became suspicious of "Graves" during the interrogation scene, with Graves's very pointed questions and interest in Dumbledore and controlling an Obscurus. When Newt challenged him during this scene, Graves immediately ordered their deaths without any sort of due process, even a _show_ trial. Then when confrontation happened with the MACUSA wizards in the subway, Graves started spouting Grindelwald's talking points.

The fan theory people had before the second movie came out as to why Kowalski remembers the creatures was that when Newt was talking about the venom he said that it can remove "bad memories" but Kowalski had a lot of good memories of wizarding world too.

Heads up Addie. In the first Harry Potter movie, Hagrid mentions his memory of bringing Harry to the muggle world when he was no bigger than a Bowtruckle. Now you see the darling little creatures they were talking about. BTW, Bowtruckles often gather around trees that provide the wood for all if not most wands. SO they are used to locate these trees by wandmakers.

If you remember Deathly Hallows and what happened to Dumbledore's sister Ariana, it is pretty much it, she was an Obscurial. Newt said that his dilution of the Swooping Evil venom could be efficient against bad memories. Jacob didn't have bad memories about magic, quite the contrary, they were of amazement and love. Also, love must give an additional imprint. Think about it, UK wizards are mostly fine with Muggles but treat other potentially powerful magical creatures (Elves and Goblins) like scum. US wizards cohabitate well with Elves and Goblins, inegrating them into their society as equals but treat Muggles like scum or at least something to be wary of. When in the 17th Century the first magical immigrants arrived the cohabitation was better but then came the Salem witches trial... Grindelwald's ideology is based on a logical fallacy. The Statue of Secrecy protects BOTH wizards and Muggles from open confrontation, like the threat of the nuclear bomb. Wizards used to be more nummerous before the 15th Century but Muggles and Wizards were at war with eachother several times and wizards kinda lost their last battle against them, had decreasing numbers leading to interracial breeding to bring in more fresh blood while the blood supremacists wanted even more than before to keep the magical supremacy over the "barbaric" Muggles. The fear of magic brang essentially one human spieces into two segregated spieces and when you see how the Dursleys are afraid and jealous, you understand why. Grindelwald looks as if he has a point but truly doesn't really...

Fun fact Addie, Hermione mentions the FAntastic Beasts book in the 2nd or 3rd movie. She mentions it I think when they had to research the werewolf versus the animegus. She took the book out of the library for a bit of light reading. HA

I found this one to be really nice. I loved Newt's character. There are flaws for sure, but to be honnest, the HP movies are FAR from perfect, so it's not even that big of a deal. They really managed to give it a magical feel, and somewhat of a more grown-up thematic feel.

@Marcus Exactly, fanservice. Just milking the money out of the franchise as you said. The other thing is that Rowling isn't a good screen-play writer, she should've stuck with the books and writing in her site, with such an amazing story she told us. The problem lays in the basic structure of those films, not just that two stories are told at the same time. There are plenty of examples of two stories being told and it works perfectly (Arcane for example, such a masterpiece

America being puritanical and segregationist, especially in the 1920's, is very on brand. What did surprise me is that POC were not discriminated against in the American magical world, which could be more of a testament to the film makers wanting to have inclusiveness rather than a realistic interpretation of the times.

Then again, in the original series blood purity and magical superiority was an analogy to real-world prejudice. Thus it makes sense that, just like British wizards, American magical society doesn't care about ethnicity but rather about magical power.

I enjoyed this movie, but the other ones not so much. I think the main problem is that this one really did focus on the creatures and fantastic beasts while the other ones felt like alternate spin-offs. They're not bad, but they just feel different. They feel like they lack a soul. This movie is charming and quirky and the others just exist if that makes sense.

Remember the time that this movie was taking place. Wizards and No-magics couldn't interact or marry. That's just a reflection of the real world, which separated Blacks and Whites the same way. That's Rowland's comment on American social history.

I love Newt, Eddie Redmayne. He’s become my favorite actor and his versatility is amazing, playing Stephen Hawking, the story of the first trans woman, and then a serial killer where he had to speak American. And he’s a very awesome person. ❤️

Those laws seem unusual and cruel now, but it made sense to include it in a movie set in 1920s America. Segregation was law, and interracial marriage was illegal. So good job on the movie direction to pick up on the vibes of the time.

Even though I grew up with the Potter books (Me and my sister got the books as gifts each year, so half of them are mine) but I think I was a tad too old for the real hype. Fantastic beasts however, I really got hooked on. a more grown up story for us fans now fully grown? maybe. and boy were the love stories cute!

What I find odd about the Macusa order to strictly be separated from No-Majes comes from the story of Ilvermorny. That wizarding school was started by a witch and a Non Magical man.

I just recently found out that there is a very good reason why the term "muggle" wasn't used in the US. It turns out that the word was already in use in America at that time. It referred to marijuana. And this all fits in, because we know that brits use the "wrong" words for little things like chips and crisps and biscuits. (P.S. I had to say it's the wrong word because I'm in America, and its a rule or something.)

I never watched this movie... I wanted to.. but I never got around to it. I did watch all the Harry Potter movies and liked...most of them. I did notice that ezra miller has a role in this movie.... this movie was obviously before his multiple arrests for assaulting women! The dude is insane!

However, I did see all three Fantastic Beasts movies in IMAX, the newer one I saw with my girlfriend and she even got me a copy of the first FB movie on DVD.

Oh Addie, so happy you enjoyed this. Queenie and Jake such a cute couple. She loves to cook and he loves to eat. And she always knows just what he wants. She ALWAYS knows what he wants. Tina and Newt not as cute but Newts creatures will always come first. Probably led to his break up with Leta. I know because my interests have caused me problems in the past. I had to change to become more compatible. Since Credence had grown up being abused it isn't difficult to see his attachment to Grindelwald. In the next movie will you see if Credence as reached his breaking point or will he still want to be controlled? Only time will tell.
