I was thinking the same as you guys. I don't speak Spanish but, I always liked her. She reached so many people. She was going to change the landscape with that wonderful voice of hers.she was already huge and was going to be a lot bigger. That woman needs to just stay where she is. Greedy crazy thing that she is. This was so senseless. This beautiful Soul trusted her & cared for her & she stole from her & then killed her. She needs to stay where she is. It's nice to see her husband Chris behind her on guitar.

I still want to cry every time I see her in this, her last concert. My God, what a loss to the entire country and world! I have never seen another entertainer just ooze so much joy, passion, sadness and love in music. And to think of the pain she must have experienced as she ran away from that woman, stumbling, gasping, crying for help. Como la flor. That's what she was like.

@@user-or1ye3iz6d Few have touched so many lives, but I do believe that such people as Selena were like angels sent to us for only a brief while to bring us joy and to remind us the sweetness that is always possible in a world that seems to have so little. Rob Squad, it's not Hispanic, it's Mexican. Puerto Rican music is kick a*s all the way. Celia Cruz, a Cuban gets everyone dancing on the first note. Etc. Etc. Etc. I'm Mexican from Los Angeles and give credit to my brothers and sisters from their respective countries and cultures. Check out music from other cultures as well as English speaking cultures. Your reactions will surely be welcomed. ❤😁👍
@timward3116
@timward3116 11 месяцев назад
@@drc1989 Well, strictly speaking, if we were going to be very precise, wouldn't we call it ""Tejano? I mean, it isn't "Mexican from Mexico," after all - even though it was huge over most of the Spanish-language world. I agree that "Hispanic" is sort of too large a term and, frankly, I've never heard it used in relation to music. Would you say Gloria Estefan's Mi Tierra is Cuban even though it is technically not from Cuba? Most people would, I think. At least most of the Mexican-Americans I know would. Instead of "Hispanic," the term "Latin" used to be used generally to indicate all music in Spanish (by us white folks LOL). Is there still the Latin Grammies? Anyway, we should try to use more precise terms to give credit to the country where the style originated (if not where the actual band and song originated), but please know that our hearts are in the right place - even though we might not know the name of the place!
@drc1989
@drc1989 11 месяцев назад
@@timward3116 I appreciate where you're coming from, but many of us don't culturally recognize the border as ours and still identfiy our expressions as Mexican. The affirmation of what some term as the other side of the border is recognition of our unbroken ties to our identity. You come across as an interesting person of true dialogue. I appreciate your comment. Abrazos hermano! ❤️😁👍

Please please please react to Selena, the movie about her life starring Jennifer Lopez as Selena. This takes me straight back to the mid 90s. I still know every word to every song on the Dreaming of You CD, even though I don't speak Spanish. (Though I wish I could, it's a beautiful language.) I think you would really like Techno Cumbia. It's a fun, fast-paced song that's a fusion of several different genres from several different cultures. A couple of good Selena songs that are a mix of Spanish and English lyrics are God's Child (Baila Conmigo) and Wherever You Are (Donde Quiera Que Estes.) I think you'd like both of those a lot. God's Child has a heavy bongo beat that I have a feeling Jay would be into.

I think she sang about 13 songs dancing in heels. No costume changes no water. She had a lot of stamina. Never looked tired. She was such a humble down to earth sweet person. That troll that took her life is now sitting in prison with her name, forever linked to Selena. I hate watching her walk off the stage because she’s got a little bit of a month to live. She told the audience that she would see them again soon at the end before the fireworks. Just a loss that I can’t get over. I like to think of her as frozen in Time forever at 23.

I think what made Selene truly special is the fact that she grew up as an American and eventually dove into making Hispanic music. It’s a beautiful blend of two cultures which made her sound very unique. Her heavy inspirations were actually American singers like Madonna and when you add in the flair of Hispanic music, you get what Selena was

I was a metal head as a teen and my sister was a huge fan so i was inadvertently exposed to her music. While the genre wasnt my thing, there was no denying her vocal range and musical talent, she skyrocketed in fame in the 90s and became a latino icon who is still beloved to this day. The queen of Tex mex, a shame that her life was cut short by someone she trusted and who was jealous all along. Selena was also a knockout, one of the most beautiful latinas of her time, with the perfect coca cola bottle latina figure. She deserves all the adolation she recieved.

I can attest to how popular she was. I lived in South Texas when she had hit it big in Latin music. This crowd would have been small potatoes for her. After all, she performed before 70,000 in Mexico (I think Monterey). It was sometime during autumn 1993, because I knew people who made the trip from the Valley. Selena must have felt on top of the world here. She had filled this stadium, she had recorded English-language crossover tracks to release in the US (Dreaming of You, I Could Fall in Love), one of the songs on her new album would be a duet with David Byrne of Talking Heads, and she was about to make her Hollywood debut--a cameo in the film "Don Juan de Marco." And then the worst happened. Down here, they call it The Day Tejano Died. Her death had that much of an impact on Tejano music. The genre has never recovered from it. Special note: Her husband is the guitarist on the left side of the screen.

Yes, Selena's voice is incredible, slightly husky and with really crisp modulation, a really nice voice. As well as she speaks and sings in Spanish here, English was her first language when she was a child in Texas and she had to learn to speak Spanish in order to sing the Tejano music her family's band played. Another excellent Spanish singer whose first language was English and who y'all have done before is Linda Ronstadt. Another of Ronstadt's traditional Mexican songs that y'all should do is "La Cigarra."

What a phenomenol voice! What a tragic ending! She was taken from us far too soon. Had she lived, she would have give Whitney, Celine and some other singers a run for their money. More Selena, please! Have you guys reacted to "Dreaming"? 🎤💕♥️😇

I love that performance and Jennifer Lopez absolutely slayed that portrayal in the biopic, And this song was one of my favs. Had the soundtrack on cassette tape. I had just saw an interview and story about her on ET weeks before she was tragically murdered. So sad.

As a Gen X Mexican-American woman, Selena became an absolute icon to other Mexican-Americans like myself and the generations after us. When the movie came out and Abraham Quintanilla does his speech in the car about what it’s like to be Mexican-American, it really resonated with me. When Selena had to learn Spanish and her dad worried about how the Mexican media would react if it wasn’t perfect, it resonated with those of us who only grew up speaking English for whatever reason and had similar worries when we did try to learn. I hope you delve into her music and her story. She was one of a kind. On a side note, my son became obsessed with Selena when he was 3, decided to be a performer when he was 8, and has been pursuing his dreams ever since. And he’s still obsessed with Selena 😊

Thank you truly appreciating the PHENOMENON that is Selena. The whole world loved Selena and even so I will always scream out how underrated she is. To be that huge at such a young age is almost unheard of, and she had so much more ahead of her. A true definition of a music legend and natural talent. I don’t think I will ever be able to get over her death but I will always be grateful for the life we got to experience from her. So grateful for Selena for ever and always ❤️🌹

I was there at the Astrodome for that show during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. She, like all the other musical artists was brought into the arena aboard a white carriage. She ascended the revolving circular stage and performed to a record sized audience. She beat out acrs like Elvis, Barry Manilow and George Strait! After all thise shows it was common for fireworks to be activated INSIDE the Adtrodome! As she departed the stage, she again boarded the long white, horse drawn, carriage and paraded around the grounds again before finally leaving so the rodeo could continue and finish. It is a common misconception that was her last concert. It was her last BIG show but she performed several small club shows afterwards. Two weeks after the big show, being a Houston area deputy Constable, I was assigned to her protection detail at another local club concert. It was drizzly and cold that night and I placed my patrol jacket because as we walked from her bus around the back of the to a service service, she shivered in her typical close fitting costume. Afterwards she gave me an autographed photo. She was murdered just two weeks later. My favorite song of hers is "No me queda más." It is a song of heartbreak and she filmed in the classic Mexican fashion while wearing an evening gown and with her hair up. She was a truly a classic beauty. I hope y'all will watch the video I suggest.

This song is what made her the Queen of Tejano music which Tejano style was born here in the Rio Grande Valley South Texas... A distinctive Tejano music began developing in the 1820s and 1830s with the unique confluence of peoples and cultures that came together during this time in Tejas: Indigenous, Spanish, Mexican, Anglo/Texan, and US. To understand Tejano music, it is important to know the history of the Tejano people. Tejanos are primarily Mexicans living in Texas. That means that Tejanos are Mexican/Indigenous people first and foremost. In fact, the word Tejas is an indigenous word from the Hasinai tribes of East Texas that means “friendly” or “allies.” When the Spaniards colonized the “Americas” in the late 1400s and Tejas in the 1600s, they intermixed and married with the indigenous people to create a mestizo people: part Spanish and part American “Indian.” Tejanos are mestizos.

This is a great song, and the live version is the best version. I am glad you guys chose this version. If you have a chance, watch the movie Selena, its a great movie and launched Jennifer Lopez's career. She was iconic in the tejano music scene, and that area of Texas. Her death was a very sad day to many. Great reaction you two!

Selena born in Texas and Spanish was her second language...when she started to tour Mexico her struggles speaking Spanish was a source of embarrassment for her....but she overcame her difficulties and was on the verge of worldwide superstardom...as depicted in her bio-pic Selena. Which launched the film career of Jennifer Lopez.

I believe you two will enjoy her hits that she sings in English. Dreaming of You , I could fall in love. One of my favorite quotes from the Selena movie, was when she was trying to become a crossover artist, her father made the statement, “ I Never Expected Her To Overcome The Obstacle, That Were In Front Of Her. Maybe For Her, They Just Don’t Exist” or something like that.

Just a teeny correction!!! Her life was short. Her peek of fame was about 3-4 years, but she wasn’t an overnight success. She started from a really early age. I want to say 7. They were playing house parties and small venues, touring all of Texas and parts of Mexico. In the early 90’s, there was a tejano music boom. Until that point, tejano was the old gen music. Young Mexican Americans listened to English only music. However, Selena and many young artists at the time made it cool for that young generation of kids to listen to tejano. And like Selena, many of us were not perfectly fluent in Spanish.

One beautiful thing about Selena, (among many), she crossed racial as well as genre boundaries that had been in place up to that point. Blending it all so uniquely. A jump forward musically, meant a jump forward in opening more doors. All starting with the one in our hearts. Everyone loves Selena, she’s universal. And she did this all, with hard work, and simply being herself. A ray of light. The movie Selena would be an excellent reaction on your other channel.

Selena was and still is one if the only Mexican American artists who were Chicano like many of us 😊. Definitely the only on that level, her crossover would have been legendary. She represents so much to the Mexican culture everyone has nothing but love and respect for her, we really do talk about her like she’s an angel or a superhero lol she was sooo talented. She sang beautifully obviously but she was also a great natural dancer ( not shown here a ton), sue designee all the bands outfits and even had a boutique at some point with her designs, perfume and an area to get your haircut and nails done. She also did her own hair and makeup and wrote songs with her brother AB on occasion. Beautiful inside and out ❤
