One of the most inspiring jazz clinics I have ever participated in - along with 15 professional jazz musicians. Jerry Bergonzi gives many tips on jazz, practicing and saxophones, but also comes up with many personal stories in this session. Also includes tunes performed by Anders Mogensen, Carl Winther, Johnny Åman and Jerry Bergonzi.

I love the way Bergonzi loves being so generous with his time and knowledge. He seems to be enjoying this so much. What a great video.

When I asked Michael Brecker in 1982 if he taught, he said: if you want to learn saxophone, study with Jerry Bergonzi!

When Brecker was asked if he still practiced, being so good, he replied Yes. When pushed on why and what, he simply said "Jerry Bergonzi".

There’s also a story about a reporter asking Mike how it felt to be the greatest saxophone player in the world and he replied “I don’t know, ask Jerry Bergonzi.”

Thank you for sharing. Jerry Bergonzi is a very original voice in the jazz world. Very generous player too.

Most generous and gracious. The statement with which you begin a solo is an art unto itself and even for a seasoned musician, following someone like Jerry can be off-putting and intimidating. Jerry would often end his solos with a melodic statement, a trailing phrase of sorts, so rich and full of motific potential that if you could take this as the foundation for a solid solo. Guitarist Mick Goodrick said following a good player was the hardest thing to do, but taking the solo after Jerry was a joy. He was so generous. They played together for many years and it was Jerry's invitation to be part of his working band that got Mick out of his first retirement after Gary Burton.

interesting workshop style, not as saxophone scientific as Dave Liebman, more plainly stated, showing by example, playin’ the horn, sage advise from the years of experience, etc. probably best for advanced students of the saxophone. The Joe Henderson volume/tone comments were interesting as years ago (early 1980’s) took part in a big band workshop residency where Joe Henderson worked with us for over a week and was surprised at how quiet Henderson’s volume was at rehearsals, we had to set up a Microphone and even than, Joe seemed to play quiet but with the full tone Bergonzi mentions, anyways thanks for sharing this workshop with Jerry Bergonzi on RU-vid, love his records, lost in the shuffle…

Joe Allard , the expert on blowing notes with arched tongue below the roof pallet to land on the flat top of the reed, not tongueing straight across the tip of the reed as in clarinet staccato !

I can totally relate to Bergonzy when he said that you can have a fat sound but not able to play loud like Joe Henderson, I have wondered why for some time now, blaming it on me playing on synthetic reeds, but it does not seem to get any better playing on cane either. Also his "play less" commentary is a real gem... Thanks for sharing this, there is so much knowledge on the internet, sometimes overwhelming, but available to anybody anywhere. The new library of Alexandria...

Cane Is certainly superior (if it's a good reed); you have all the spectrum high, mid, low. With Synthetic you will not have that completeness and Will force you to compensate. All of this affetct the way you can shape and project your sound (volume Is part of that )

@@fabiodellacuna8180 You may be right Fabio, I have actually improved a lot on the volume I can play but still not as loud as I would like it to be. I have struggled so much with cane reeds that the only thought of going back gives me the creeps, but who knows...

I've seen these cats live so many times that I don't know what to do. Anyway, it's hard to discern the harmonic stuff that had (I assume) been done to There will never be another you. Anyone have info on it, I don't have the ears to pick things up at the moment.

Emotionally , tunes in all styles explain joy,sadness, regret , sexual love,anger, peace, relaxation ,anxiety etc, LesterYoung, Chet baker, Bechet, Rollins, Billie , Scott Hamiiton, Webster , Henderson play their moods through improvising over the melody by ear, no thought of scales or memorising all the chord mames. New Orleans started it all with the blues scale ! Too much intellectualising in Jerry's approach for me !

Whether those guys took the time to learn about scales, or not, they were constantly using them. You can either understand what you’re doing, and have some intent or you cannot understand what you’re doing, and have much less effective intent.
