Very impressed with Mike Wolff. He seemed very down to earth and just GETS it as far as what to do musically. Just love his lines of thinking about music and creating. Better to be a sloppy original than a polished copy. I've already learned a ton just watching his piano videos.
All you young cats, listen up! This is a priceless master class from a guy who is cool, honest, funny and with a ton of insights into the art and business of music.
So many genres of music to play. It's hard to keep up with all of them. I am very diverse and felt like I could play anything. I still play everything and anything. I love to learn and teach. This is a good communicator with a friendly and easy demeanor. A real musician.
I'm really jealous of a guy who got to play with Joe Farrell and Ronnie Cuber (two of my favorites). Mike doesn't mention Richard Beirach, but I thought I may have heard that influence in "Like Someone In Love". Thanks for making this masterclass available to us.
I've been searching for Toni DeGrati(DeGrate?) and the Astral Project... can't seem to find any videos or music. Anyone have links? Also: One movie he talks about "The Tic Code", and the other with Sigourney Weaver is "The Girl In the Park"
+Nate Drobner he talks about contemporary harmony a bit later. It took 1 year for someone to replay to my comment and on top of that the replay does not answer my question :) well done there
He is right about the hunger for knowledge and how the rich kids want it served on a plate. When knowledge was not so readily available you had to be dedicated to find it.ORIGINALITY comes by learning from mistakes and finding a new way. If you know everything and it's all been done before, why bother? Don't tell me that the note I heard and chose to play was wrong. We might come up with a new theory. Mike Wolff is OK.
Mike Wolff' statement about Bill Evans is totally untrue. Bill Evans, by his own admission, WAS the guy who listened to a lot of different players, studied them and analysed their work. Therefore his background in Jazz was very solid. None of the great players was TRYING to come up with something original - they WERE original but they all just tried to play this music as well as they could.
Not really. He's just reciting his history. It wouldn't make sense to say, " I played with a well known vibes player who will go nameless. And I played with a sax player who will also be nameless..."
