Confirms what I already knew about the 1970 years Canon lenses. Proud owner of a 135mm/f2.5 S.S.C. I will definitely chase a 100mm from now on. In that range, I also use a Fujinon 100mm/f2.8 (M42) way underrated when I bought it a few months ago (price rising since) which you may know as a very good performer as well. Keep those reviews coming! Excellent work!
Thank you so much! That's great that you have the FD 135mm f2.5! It's a fantastic lens which I need to review at some point. I haven't tried the Fujinon 100mm f2.8 yet, but now I want to. :) So many amazing vintage lenses out there!
I have the Canon FD 100mm f/2.8 and the Canon FD 135mm f/2.8. Both lenses are stamped US Navy. The 100mm had a fixed focus ring (I couldn't find out any info; other than maybe used on, onboard airplane cameras; as it was fixed on infinity); to which I used acetone to loosen the glue that held it fixed; and now I can use the focus. There is no aperture control ring on it; but using my FD/FL lens mount and turning the open/close works the iris. Both are very nice lenses.
Wow, you have US Navy stamped FD lenses?!?! That’s amazing! They are quite rare! I would love to see how they were used back in the day. Thank you for describing their differences. I’m glad you are still able to use them.
@@VintageOptiks Thank you. I might add; I also have the Canon FD Macro 100mm f/4.0. IF you can get your hands on this one; you won't be disappointed; especially at close up photography. I very much like your RU-vid channel; keep posting and have a great day.
@@steveinthethumb6441 Thank you for letting me know. I've heard great things about the FD 100mm f4 macro! I need to try it at some point. So many lenses, so little time. :) Glad you enjoy the videos. Thank you so much!!
I have missed your reviews. It's been a while 😢 I've recently managed to get a copy of this lens based on your review and I'm looking forward to shooting with it soon. Thanks!
Hey, that’s really nice of you to say. Sorry I haven’t posted anything in awhile. I’ve been busy in the darkroom. How do you like the lens? I hope you’re enjoying it.
Great presentation and excellent photos. Have you tried the Olympus OM equivalent (also 100mm f2.8)? How does it compare? The OM is one of my favourite lenses and the f2 version is highly prized... and highly priced.
Thank you so much! I haven't tried the Zuiko equivalent yet. But I will definitely review it at some point. I am a huge Zuiko fan and I love all the Zuiko lenses I've tried so far!! And yes, the 100mm f2 lens is supposed to be amazing, but unfortunately quite overpriced at the moment.
@@VintageOptiks yeah, too over-priced. The 2.8 stands on its own. I'm a big fan of OM lenses too. If you're interested I did a three minute video lens test. Just search for Sony A7C and OM 100mm, it should come up. I really would love to see a comparison of the OM and the FD though. Your photos are excellent, you make a convincing argument for it so I've put it on my wishlist. Thanks once again for your efforts. I'm binge-watching all your videos and then checking out eBay to see what's available!
@@followtheboat I just watched your video of the OM 100mm f2.8. It looks fantastic! Such stunning quality when paired withe Sony a7C!! I also subscribed to your channel. I love traveling as well and it's really great to see all your adventures around the world. Thanks again for all the kind words about my photos and videos. I really appreciate it! Take care.
@@VintageOptiks thanks for the kind words. I'd love to spend more time with either stills photos or ambient videos like that one, but we have a weekly schedule for our travel videos and we're still in semi-lockdown here, so not much chance of doing street photography. But thanks to you I've just treated myself to a few of the lenses you've profiled and look forward to playing with reverse rings and helicoids as we sit it out!
@@followtheboat I see. Hopefully the lockdown will be lifted soon and you can enjoy street photography again. Glad to hear that you picked some vintage lenses to enjoy! If you have any questions about adapting rangefinder lenses, don't hesitate to get in touch. I'll be more than happy to help. Take care!
I love all the different 100mm focal lengths, which were mostly associated with Canon at this time ( Canon FL 3,5 100mm, Canon 3,5 100mm with LSM). The best image quality of all has the Canon nFD 2,0 100mm. It is stunning. And the FD 4,0 100Macro has qualities if its own. It was one of two lenses, Canon didn't change the optical formula (FLM 4,0 100, FD 100/4.0 sc Macro and nFD 100/4,0 Macro). The other lens was the 5,6 100-200 from FL to nFD.
@@VintageOptiks You will not be disapointed. Sharpness, contrast and saturated colours from open aperture on. No flares.... I used this lens with all Canon Film cameras and it never failed. Along with the 85mm and the other 100 mm my favorite lens.
If you are looking for a macro specific lens definitely get the 100mm f4 macro. The great thing about macro lenses is that they can be used for general purpose photography as well. You won’t have the speed and the shallow depth of field of the f2.8 lens, but if those things aren’t important to you then definitely go with the macro lens.
Yeah I have the Nikkor 105mm f2.5 AI version, which I love and reviewed awhile back. Both are great lenses with a few slight differences. You can’t go wrong with either one.
I think you meant to write Nikon AiS 105 f2.5 or Canon 100mm f2.8 SSC. It's a tough choice because I like both lenses a lot, but I would actually go for the Canon. I love the colors from that lens and the sharpness is outstanding. Cheers!
Back in the day I've had the Olympus's variant of the 100mm f2.8, and while that lens was just as sharp and with beautiful bokeh, but it lacked a ton of contrast, almost as bad as if the lens suffered from haze, while actually being clean...
Hmm, that's odd. I also have the Olympus variant (the later multicoated version), but my copy performs great. Great contrast, and all around excellent lens.
@@VintageOptiks Yeeeah, well, my copy wasn't a silver nose, but it might be uncoated one since it has letter in front of the Zuiko inscription... Don't know, it was a quite some time ago.
If you are to compare this Canon FD 100mm lens to the FD 135mm f2.5 S.C., the 100mm lens can focus 50cm closer, it's a bit lighter and a bit smaller. But at the end of the day they are both great lenses.
@@VintageOptiks when I first used it on my Sony I was shocked at how good it is. When I got the famous Nikon 105mm I was disappointed in comparison to the Canon 135mm.
Hi. My experience with FD lenses has been only with Sony cameras, so I can’t really recommend an adapter for EOS R. But I’m sure that there are plenty of good affordable options out there. My advice will be to get the cheap, inexpensive ones. They do the job just fine.
I use a helicoid adapter to adopt almost all of my vintage lenses. In this case I used Canon FD to NEX ( for Sony E Mount) helicoid adapter. There is a link in the description of the video for the adapter.
