From 1971 to 1983, Spielberg was incredible. I love many of his later movies, but his early period was superb.

Man, This is great stuff. Great interview, and the awkward wide shot of Mick and Steven sitting in silence waiting for the intro music to end is so endearing/hilarious.

Like to watch us squirm, huh?

As someone who works in public access, I empathize with anybody squirming in front of a camera lens. Thanks for posting all this great footage!

I saw this interview yesterday and I'd like to thank you so much for it. Spielberg is for me the most important influence. I'm from south of Brazil and been making films since I was able to... Spielberg is the real dream maker..and Close Encounters is the great Spielberg film for me. Thanks a lot!!

Great interview! I think it would've been cool if Carpenter & Spielberg could've been interviewed together in their prime. Do you know if Spielberg was a fan of JC's films?

Carpenter said in an interview he didn’t care for Spielberg’s movies and said Close Encounters wasn’t a good film. Wonder if he still feels that way.

The director's cut of Close Encounters is THE definitive version. It combines scenes from both the 1977 version and the 1980 version to tell the complete story of Roy's descent into madness as he feels compelled to create his ultimate Devil's Tower monument in his living room, which fully explains why his wife took their kids and left him. Plus Roy's view inside the Mothership has been rightfully deleted.
@baldaxx

Apparently the addition of the scene where Roy enters the mothership was the price Spielberg had to pay Colombia to be able to shoot the scenes he wanted to insert.

Read the book Situation Red by Leonard Stringfield. There is eyewitness testimony that read like scenes from the movie.
