"Now, once you've read these stories, run the other way - and then read The Lord of The Rings for the twentieth time." 🤣 Best advice I've listened to today.
Fantastic video, thank you Deacon. For a long time I found resonance with the Tolkien reactionary fantasy of Joe Abercrombie. I can now look back a upon his work as a great portrayal of how things work in a world (or life) without Christ. His First Law series is hilarious and entertaining. There are many secular stories which are valuable because they recognise problems in the world but ultimately are unable to provide solutions.
Well spoken, but if you look at stories told in the shape of role playing games you see an extra facet to the topic. A character, a hero, dies, takes a step back, lives again and tries again, in some games an indefinite number of times. Maybe the difference between a hero and an un-hero is simply finishing the journey successfully.
26:26 The description of this character is giving me Gollum vibes: truly, the destiny of those who give in to the wrong worship. Funny, how Tolkien got it right half a century prior.
It should come as no surprise that Moorcock had a huge influence on George RR Martin. George has referenced him so many times in a song of ice and fire.
Great video. The Green Knight novel is fantastic. The film is horrible. Writers can only write at their Spiritual level. So Creating Truly Good Heroic characters is going to take such a sacrifice that many in this generation will not be able to give or even know how to. And from the state of things, its only going to get worst. We are entering into the Grey wastelands. But little oasises and arks out still there. Your work is proof of that.
Hi! Great video! Great series! I think the most important "truth" we can learn as Christians and readers of fiction, fantasy and realistic writing in our time is the same thing Jordan Peterson always says "Take responsibility!". Responsibility for your thoughs, your words, your actions, the lives of the people around you, not because someone is watching, or because you want some reward, it's because it matters! Our lives matter in the sense that we can spread goodness. As Gandalf says "darkness is conquered by everyday good deeds and the foolishness of a simple heart!". This in my opinion was the true belief of what Tolkien lived through, being a teacher, an academic, a friend, a parent, simple things we do that matter. The "white glow" that the good guys in Lord of the Rings HAVE! They are not using! Its not clothing. The shine its the manifestation of their Incorruptible Nature... Is it a simplistic moral posture?? YES! A simple moral that a child can understand...
