Stories about authors having their work mishandled frustrate me to no end. May have to hunt down Descendant of the Crane (in a way that hopefully benefits the author) just to restore some sense of justice to my worldview...

I love standalones, I get severe book hangover and standalones make it stronger but shorter so I can move to another book quicker. Love them. And hello murder mysteries! Sorcery of thorns in already in my tbr since the author is my favorite and it's bound to give me Amazing visuals :D

ok long may she reign sounds AMAZING!! i added it to my amazon and goodreads list ASAP! my favorite fantasy stand alone is Heartless by Marissa Meyer, it an alice and wonderland retelling. it about the backstory of the queen of hearts. im not a big fan of alice and wonderland but i loved this book! i did make a review recently if anyone is interested in watching it!

Love the new edition effects!! I always prefer standalones. It isn't easy to get all books from a series because here is more complicated. The ones that get to us may not continue. Thank goodness I'm more into classics right now although the prices even in second hand books are extremely expensive. Anyway, I love your videos to see what is going on in the book world. Warbreaker is a great book. It's a weird hybrid though, it is a stand alone, but it is also part of the larger Cosmere and so is tied in to other books.

Fantasy Stand Alone that I enjoyed was :Spirit Fox Mickey Zucker Reichert 1998. Once in awhile, the gods choose an animal and pair the two together in unity. The lord's Daughter, Kiarda, was chosen, but what happens when the animal chosen is slain on their birthday? The spirit resides within the human and is subject to altering consciousness. This takes place in a land where peace is guarded fiercely and those training with the blade are outcast, that is, until a well trained army approaches, bent on conquest.

You *may* have convinced me to try Spinning Silver. I stomached Uprooted for as long as I possibly could before DNFing, and I thought I hated it enough to never give her another shot. But......you’re definitely selling it to my folklore/fae-loving self.

I'm definitely going to have to check out Spinning SIlver. I had to DNF Uprooted but I'm hoping to have more luck with Spinning Silver. I'm also a big fan of China Mieville as far as other fantasy standalones and pretty much everything he writes is a stand-alone. He definitely tends toward weird but he does fun stuff with language and wordplay.

I have Descendant of the Crane on my shelf and am planning to read it in May. Some great books here! Also really enjoyed The Shadows Between Us, Sorcery of Thorns, Spinning Silver and Warbreaker. (I’m not used to having read so many on your recommendation lists!)

I always feel like there aren't enough standalone books, but then really I have read more than I realized too! Long Mey She Reign sounds interesting, and it is one I have never heard of before! Descendant of the Crane is one that has been on my list to pick up forever! It sounds like a really good book and the cover is super pretty!

My favorite lesser known YA standalone fantasy is Sisters of Sword and Song by Rebecca Ross 🥰 its a Greek inspired story about sisters. One is a warrior and the other becomes a scribe. It's such an action packed, emotional, and well paced story. It's a story very focused on family, loyalty, and self-discovery. I highly recommend haha so much! I also love Sorcery of Thorns, The Light Between Worlds, and Cinderella is Dead 💗

Spinning Silver and Warbreaker! 🤩 I really enjoyed both! Since we're talking about standalones: Have you ever read Circe? I don't think I've ever seen a video about this book on your channel, but I could be wrong! Anyway, Circe is a very enjoyable read, but I LOVED the Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec. I just read it (it's a new release, came out this month) and it's like Circe but follows a witch in Norse Mythology (the wife of Loki) and it's now one of my favorite books ever. I hope you have the time to check it out if it sounds interesting.

If you want great fantasy standalones you can't forget Neil Gaiman's books, I'm reading through most of them for the first time recently and they've all been brilliant, especially the hardback illustrated edition of The Ocean At The End Of The Lane.

Another great fantasy stand alone that has a Jewish main character is The Sisters of the Winter Wood by Rena Rossner. It takes place in Moldova and also deals with the pograms against the Jews. It has two perspectives (the two sisters) one of which is written in prose. The author's family actually came to America from Moldova to escape the pograms.
