I wanted Metatron's arc to end so badly, but this episode and the one after made me realize why they kept him around. Curtis Armstrong played his part beautifully.

Curtis Armstrong is one of my absolute favorite character actors of all time.

Granted the Season 5 finale did make it clear that he knew the whole time that Sam and Dean would win and he gave them help when they needed it, but he didn't want to just do it for them because that would get in the way of free will. He took an active role in Season 11 because he felt personally responsible for what was happening.

Like he said in his autobiography, "Why I don't answer prayers, and you should be glad I don't." It's not supposed to be an easy fix, even him showing himself wasn't easy.

His whole character arc has been about him learning that he doesn't have to be Daddy's soldier. That he can fight for free will and live his life the way he wants. Then he's killed immediately after gaining free will.

I'm an atheist too, but if there was a version of God that I wanted to believe in or even could believe in, it would be Chuck. A God who admits he isn't perfect and doesn't always know what to do, but tries his best to be a good parent to his Children. Who doesn't intervene, not because he doesn't care, but because he wants us to be able to take care of ourselves. Sounds much more reasonable than just constantly spouting "He works in mysterious ways" every time a tragedy occurs.

God doesn't have to be consistent, even in the bible he can be nice to a person and then turn on them if they stop following his plans. He's God he can do whatever he wants, especialy with his creation. Him being the final antagonist fits perfectly the theme of the show of freewill and choice. As God's plan is the embodiment of Not having true freewill. Remember that Sam and Dean refused a direct command from God when he asked them to kill Jack, Imagine if abraham refused God's command to kill his son Isaac, would God be nice to him ? It's the same thing that happened in the show that so many fans failed to understand. There is also the problem of evil who has been raised by the show since the early seasons, how come God is allowing all these monsters, demons and evil creatures to freely roam the earth with no intervention ? The idea that God has to be "good" by our standards is a construct, he is God he has the right to do anything he wants inlcluding wiping out the universe and start a new one which is what he was planing to do if he was able to defeat the brothers and make them submit to his plans. So to me God's portrayal in supernatural always made sense, I perfecty understood his character, but then again I'm not a religious person so unlike some fans I don't have the bias of a preconceived notion of how God has to behave for him to be "good" for us. To me God is simply the creator, opmnipotent and omnisciente period, he can do whatever he wants.

I think this was supposed to be the original end before they decided to extend the show.

I think this is a demonstration how humans always search for higher purpose or deities and feel lost without some higher power giving them a road map, and Chuck in this case at least knows he's not what people consider him to be (Devine, pure and merciful) but dosen't want to disappoint them YET

I believe it was all planed he was gonna be a bad guy. They even state this kinda logic in the last season. "Chuck is a writer....... Writers lie.."

So there has been a big change in God's behavior throughout the whole Bible indeed which fits the change from Chuck to Jack. Not saying Jack is Jesus but symbolically there's a similarity. Also Chuck and Jack have similar names, I mean they sound alike, maybe that was not a random name choice after all.
