I fell in love with this song since hearing it in the film, Inside Llewyn Davis, and have treasured getting to sing it ever since. We travelled to the top of the nicest hill we could find at sunset (in the freezing cold) to film this video, which I hope you enjoy greatly!

Lyrics:
If I had wings like Noah's dove
I'd fly up the river to the one I love
Fare thee well, oh honey, fare thee well
I had a man, who was long and tall
he moved his body like a cannon ball
Fare thee well, oh honey, fare thee well
I remember one evening in the pouring rain
And in my heart, was an aching pain
Fare thee well, oh honey, fare thee thee well
So sure as a bird flying high above
life ain't worth living without the one you love
Fare thee well, oh honey, fare thee well
Fare thee well

Was wondering now that the studio sessions album stretch goal was met, if that album will continue to include songs that are actively coming out, or if there’s going to be a cut off point. Otherwise this albums looking to be pretty long, not that I’m complaining of course, the more the merrier! Cheers!

This moves me in a way I can't quite describe, but I'll try. The gentle yet firm harmonies, the heartfelt delivery, the heavy lyrics, the guitar work just leave you thinking and feeling (maybe shedding tears). They all speak of loss and regret, but with a hint of hope if not for yourself than for whoever you care about most. I could be grasping at straws here, but I just had to be honest. Thank you for another masterful piece Longest Johns.

One of my favorite folk songs. The history behind it is convoluted and sad, like many folk songs. It was recorded by an ethnomusicologist in the early 1900's, sung by a black woman just named in the notes as "Dink." Any original recording was lost, but the song managed to survive through published music and recordings by other artists. Presumably, Dink received basically nothing for this or the other songs she shared.(John Lomax's writings on African-American music at times very racist). Now, over one hundred years later, the song has had a resurgence in popularity, following "Inside Llewyn Davis."

Judged by our standards today, Lomax could well have phrased things differently. His deep respect and appreciation for the musicians he recorded cannot be overstated. The effort he made immortalized many of them and gave us songs like this one that would easily have been lost. Perhaps you could get off your high horse and use your energy to contribute as Lomax did. In his own way, he made the world a better place. Think about the heart connection between Dink and these musicians. It's a beautiful thing.

A historical note on the song: About 100 years ago, a man named John Lomax traveled throughout the American South recording/documenting musicians, mostly Black, whose music would otherwise have been lost. He recorded an old Black woman named Dink singing this. I haven't read Lomax's notes about this song. She may have written it, though the line, "I'd fly up the river, to the one I love," makes me think it may be older. "Up (or down) river" refers to an enslaved person who was "sold off," often never to be seen again. Given this, I think the Longest Johns nailed it.

I love the way you're harmonising on this. I've not seen the film, but it's obviously got some great music in it. Hopefully you make it back to the Broadstairs Folk Festival this year, and hopefully I will be well enough to see you. I bloody ought to be, I live on the seafront, it's not much of a commute. =] Also, if you're still taking requests, I think the Phil Ochs classic The Men Behind The Guns would be an absolutely perfect fit for you to cover.

The Corries did a comedy song called the "Bricklayers Song" - always good to remember that someone is having a worse day than you... Also have you ever done Scarborough Fayre? One of your songs had an outro which sounded just like the Scarborough intro, and I wondered if it was a medley which had been split?
