I’m fairly certain that he knows his mom is dead. He asked the lady that brings the money where the money comes from and after she answered he said something about her lying to spare his feelings. Also, I don’t think he would have missed his mom’s name on that gravestone before Karino blocked it. Also, he was making a big deal about why Karino was standing there and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he just happened to ask Karino if he thought he would see his mom again while Karino was trying to hide her name. He was even hesitant to ask. You also have to consider how he reacted when he knew people were lying to him. He didn’t get mad, he was thankful that they were giving him hope
