The Ford S-Max was a new, cooler take on the MPV people carrier genre, still spacious but better to drive and look at but in April 2023 Ford ended production with nbc replacement Farewell S Max.

Every 3rd car used to be a Ford when I was a young lad. Now every 3rd car is a Hyundai or a Kia. It isn't necessarily the SUV that has killed off Ford's range, it's Ford.
@clunkclickeverytrip
Built in Genk Belgium 🇧🇪 the plant also produced the mondeo c - max b - max the production plant was shut down in 2015 and a loss of over 5000 jobs.
@AJC508
In 2010, I inherited a gen1 S-Max from a colleague who had left the company. It was less than 12 months old, disgustingly dirty and I spent an entire day cleaning it.
@InvisibleTouch87
Great car, especially with the 2.5t Volvo engine fitted! I was a Ford salesman in Chester back in 2006 when the new 007 film, Casino Royale, came out. Daniel Craig was from Chester, so the city hosted the regional premiere of the film and Daniel Craig’s parents were the guests of honour. My dealership chauffeured them to the cinema in an S-Max as it was the newest, coolest thing at the time!

We are on our second, and it turns 10 this year, having owned for 7 years our one was the slight refresh of the 1st one and the plastics on centre console wearing much better despite being piano black, amazing car, handles well, reasonably economical, and incredibly practical.. not sure how or what we would replace it with… epic for filling with kids, dog and piles of stuff to hammer through France - nice video
@RichieRouge206
These were absolutely brilliant cars to drive and the 2.5T Volvo engine was an absolute hoot! Such a sleeper and MPVs were such much more sensible vehicle. Trust RU-vid to do a stupid cull… great review Matt

The higher seating position was the main reason for many people to buy an MPV, I think: most of the former MPV-people now buying an SUV seems to say that anyway. The extra room and practicality was a bonus and not as much a necessity. Even then though, it seems there are still quite a few people who would buy an MPV if they were still around, enough for, say, 2 brands (Renault?) to still produce them. That's the thing these days with European car manufacturers: they all seem to be targetting the same customer now and don't notice other potential customers. Killing all variety in cars and car types in the process and acting like one big heard of sheep. And what Ford is (not) up too these days, is too strange for words: determining what the market wants always used to be their great strength, as was so beautifully shown by the S-max. Along with the last 2 Renault espace generations, I still think it's the best looking MPV ever made.
@jo05dk
I will mourn the S-Max. Car manufactorers are killing off the good cars, and it makes me equally sad and angry. I've had the pleasure of being a passenger in S-Maxes a few times, every time a 2L diesel with the auto gearbox, which is how i'd have one if i needed the space. Absolutely lovely car to be driven around in. I have a lot of love for the S-Max. When it looked like i might need more room i was seriously considering a Galaxy, because of the expoeriences i've had with the S. Great platform for sure. Ending such a car is moronic.
@peteredwards7872
Fully agree with your sentiments, I for one don’t want an SUV. Give me an estate or MPV any day 👍
@sharonec5419
The S-Max was a great car. The Dad had one. It was like a Spaceship inside.
@Chriswales
Didn't realise it had been still on sale, thought they'd stopped a while ago. But yes fashions change. We have the only 7 seater on the street, it's mostly SUVs here now.
@Rapscallion2009
Just FYI. Ford intend to build the Explorer electric SUV in the old Fiesta production lines. I think they worked out that selling 50,000 euro SUV's makes more than 15,000 euro superminis.
@Chamba1977
As a huge admirer of Fords old and new, I'm dismayed to see the downward spiral the company seems to be taking at the moment.
@davidhayes4814
The MPV sector still exists in the form of van based derivatives. Some of these are astonishingly good …… and equally astonishingly expensive.
@maxidyne
One of the few MPV's that looks and drives good! Another great review Matt, enjoyed it.
@rakeshtak
Great feature vid! Smax fan here, owned them since 2015 I’m on my second. The mk2 lost the aeroplane handbrake in exchange for an electric one and some other changes, but great engines and the passenger space makes those road trips much easier! Not sure what I would replace it with if I had to!
@terryatkinson3182
Didn't know how good these were. So many things like the seats on rails were on my old Renault scenic 2001, though the scenic had cubby holes in the floor and under the front seats and twin sunroofs 🤗
@GentilsGarage
Never drove one, but been a passenger many times on my boos while had one for many years. Lovely on long trips and comfortable. I would buy one
@kevincahill1204
I have been the owner of a 2012 one an it’s a great work horse ..only flaw ..the turn circle
@jimb7406
Great review Matt. We had 2 both from new - first a 57 plate 2.0 litre manual 140 bhp titanium. Ran that one to 2014 when we got number 2 a 2.0 litre manual with the 163 bhp upgraded engine. Got the electric memory seat pack and IR windscreen. They are great dog cars - very low boot with masses of space. We took the 3rd row seats out to make the boot even larger. No spare wheel unfortunately. The 2.0 litre engines were the DW10 built in France by PSA. Absolutely bullet proof if maintained properly. Big solid heavy cars that were brilliant in the snow if fitted with winter tyres. Great driving position and big supportive seats. Both cars averaged 41 mpg and were very reliable. Factor in replacement front wheel bearings and new brake discs every 40-50k miles. Replaced earlier this year by a Toyota RAV4.
