Farewell Tribute to European Fluorescent Lighting

Since 25 August 2023, countries that are part of the European Union have made it illegal to import and sell most fluorescent lamps intended for domestic general lighting applications. As a tribute to this fluorescent lighting ban, I have lit up a few of my European market Philips TL-D 36W T8 fluorescent tubes in my 1940s North American Mitchelite 2 lamp F40 preheat fluorescent tube shoplight fixture.

These fluorescent lamps you show come from the city where I live. Poland, Piła. The factory is now called Signify, not Philips, but it produced under the Philips and Piła brands. Piła were the same, but cheaper, dedicated to the Polish market. My favorite color 850 (natural daylight) was produced under the Piła brand. Previously, before 1989, it was a state-owned factory and produced Polamp fluorescent lamps (my last video). It was sold to the Dutch in the 1990s for very little $, and now, thanks to the European Union, it will be completely liquidated. It is still the largest employer in the city. If we talk about European fluorescent lamps, we cannot miss out on Osram, Sylvania, Narva (Germany), Mazda (Philips for France), Nordeon, ITT Claude (France), Thorn (UK), Aura (Sweden), Leuci (Italy), Tungsram / General Electric (Hungary), Tesla (Czechoslovakia before 1993), Razno, Alinex (USSR). There are definitely more smaller brands, but I don't remember all of them.

This is really sad. when the cases of the tubes will go on sale, I will buy cases of all wattages and all colors to have. maybe, in distant future I will be able to sell the tubes quite expensively a piece to people who miss old technology and nostalgia. who knows.

Getting cases of these tubes is an extremely expensive process in some cases. In other cases, you could try to search up recycling centers for them if they let you take them home.

It would have been cool at the end to put one 2700K and one 6500K lamp in fixture so we could see the difference in color temperature between the two extremes.
@worldwidehidcollectorusa3519
@worldwidehidcollectorusa3519 10 месяцев назад
The lowest color temperature that I know of for a fluorescent lamp anywhere in the world is 2500K. From what I know, that CCT is only available on some Japanese market circline fluorescent lamps made by Mitsubishi.

@@worldwidehidcollectorusa3519weren't these very low (sub2700K) lamps called extra warm white or very warm white, something like that? I believe I seen 2600K in some catalog a long time ago. 2500K would be approaching that of a high pressure sodium

@@worldwidehidcollectorusa3519 Fluorescent lamps in this color were also available in Europe, but only as integrated compact lamps. They were produced by Osram (dulux int facility). The phosphor had a slightly yellow tint.

Not all fluorescent lamps are banned. Specialised tubes will be still available, like the UV-B/C tubes. UV-B used by reptile keepers for their pets and UV-C used for disinfection. The following halogen bulbs are banned too: G9, G4, GY6.35.

I think the 2023 fluorescent bans in the EU mostly target lamps that produce different shades of “white” light like the ones I have demonstrated in my video.

Where the osram lumilux tubes on 36w? They may to be too in this video and there tubes are also from European market. I think in post soviet countries in 2023 which is not in EU the fluorescent tubes can may go down to history too, in Russia it was in 2020, and in 2023 the end of this period already may be as for whole, also in UK and Switzerland, and CIS countries
