I remember visiting back in Fargo-Moorhead twenty years ago (I went to college there), and I took a bus around town. There was a black bus driver who had moved from Detroit and I was talking to him about how he like it. He said he had visited an army buddy in Moorhead, a couple of years before, and noticed that people left their cars running at the post office when they went in. He said when I saw someone leaving a Cadillac running, unlocked... he thought - this looks like a great place to raise a family.

@2127EShelby
@2127EShelby 4 месяца назад
Yup, she died out in the woods near Detroit Lakes MN (a town of @5,000), 50 miles east of Fargo. The woman had mental issues. For someone from Tokyo, and being around millions of people, going out somewhere with no light pollution, looking at a meteor shower under clear, cold skies, dying of hypothermia seems like a good way to go.

I guess you know by now that it wasn't a true story. The Coen Brothers made the statement at the beginning to get the audience interested. The only part that had a basis in reality was the bit with the wood chipper. There was a news story about someone trying to dispose of a body that way, and they decided to put it in the movie. The wood chipper that was used in the movie is now in the Fargo, North Dakota visitor's center with a leg sticking out of it. In any case, as you pointed out, most movies that are based on true stories are inaccurate, often close to being complete fiction. Jerry got himself in trouble by taking loans from GMAC on non-existent cars, and hoped to get himself out of it (and more) with the ransom money. I think he wanted to use the money to invest in the parking lot (that is, assuming that wasn't also a scam). Fargo won the Oscars for best lead actress (Frances McDormand as Marge) and best original screenplay. It was nominated for best picture, best director, best cinematography, best editing, and best supporting actor (William H. Macy as Jerry). IMO it should have won most of those awards. William H. Macy's created a real character in his portrayal of a useless fool. The Coen Brothers made a lot of great movies. Some of their best (in addition to Fargo) are No Country for Old Men, The Big Lebowski, True Grit (the 2010 version, not the 1969 version with John Wayne), Raising Arizona, and Blood Simple.

The film takes place in Minnesota. When coming up with the title, the Coen’s basically had two options, call it Brainerd, as part of the film takes place in Brainerd, Minnesota or call the film Fargo after Fargo, North Dakota where the film’s first scene takes place, despite the fact the entire film was shot in Minnesota. Though in Fargo, North Dakota they have a museum and have a wood chipper with a fake leg sticking out of it as well as the police uniform Marge wears. I found this out by seeing the film in theaters in 2021 for the films 25th Anniversary. This is a great film to see on the big screen. Also, the part with the wood chipper did happen. A woman named Helle Crafts was killed by her husband, froze her body in a freezer and he later chopped her into pieces and put her body through a wood chipper. Other than that part, the Coen’s were making fun of the “Based on a True Story” trope that’s gone on for years.

Wade has lots of money, but offers nothing but contempt for Jerry. Jeannie doesn't work, but they live in a big house that Jerry probably can't afford on his own, so he's been embezzling from the dealership and is just trying to dig his way out. He's obviously not the sharpest pencil in the box, and does even worse with the guys Shep hooked him up with (if they had tried this on their own, the outcome would not have been much different). Frances McDormand won a best actress Oscar for this performance, and the Coen brothers won for best screenplay. It was also nominated for best picture, and William H. Macy was nominated for best supporting actor.

But they never really say how Jerry got so far in the hole. He needed the money for more than just house payments. A home like that in MN back then cost $150,000-$200,000 tops.
@danielserda
@danielserda 4 месяца назад
@@laudanum669 I don't think it was just the house, I always assumed that Jerry just couldn't support the lifestyle his wife (and her father) expected him to provide. By the time we're seeing him, he's already near the bottom of a hole he's about to dig even deeper.
@laudanum669
@laudanum669 4 месяца назад
@@danielserda Yeah but my point was we don't really see them living to access he's not driving a Mercedes-Benz or some other fancy car. I live in Minnesota and that is actually quite a modest house. We don't see that Jerry has any vices like gambling or Mistresses on the side. So they really leave it open to how he got so far in debt.

The Coens have been elusive about the truth of the story over the years. At the time, they said it wasn't really true, that they meant it as a joke on the constant raising and lowering of stakes that happens in pretty much every scene. For example, they go from disposing of a dead body in a woodchipper to literally having a conversation about stamps in the very next scene. Why would anyone leave that in the movie, unless it all really happened, note for note (or they were sort of trolling the audience)? In more recent years they've flipflopped on it a bit, saying at first that it was pieced together from several news stories, and then saying it was largely made up, but "inspired" by one true story, so it's still kind of a mystery. Great movie though. Widely considered the Coens' masterpiece.

I think the Coen brothers have only made one film based on a true story, "A Serious Man" which was an ode to their father. With a great bar mitzvah scene, second only to the one in "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz". Though 'torn from the headlines' tropes are kind of their thing... Greetings from Canadia!

I assume you’ve seen a few of these, but I’d be interested in your takes on who you would vote for best picture of 1994. It’s the best lineup I’ve ever seen for the award. "Based on a true story" means very little in a place where people make up stories for a living. Almost every Hollywood movie that has that tagline is so removed from its original context as to be a completely different story. The best examples of this are in movies about teachers. This movie is not based on a true story,. The instinct to immediately disbelieve that statement was correct.

Series 1,2,4,and 5 are just as good as the movie. And it's not a true story. The Coen bros. always put that at the beginning of this movie and the series. I don't know why.
