Farmall H Transmission Cover Removal and Powerwashing Internals

Continuing the series on the Farmall H maintenance now includes removal of the transmission cover and powerwashing the internals to remove the decades old sludge imbedded in the bottom. Earlier attempts at flushing with diesel fuel removed a great deal of nastiness, but further investigation revealed the need to totally clean the housing by more thorough means.
There's a brief discussion concerning removal of the shifting lever and the positioning of the shifting forks and gears on the upper rail. We even take a quick look, though it is obstructed by the clutch, at the worn edges of the originally slightly tapered square cut gears. Most of the transmission whine and howl is because of the style of gears used in the gear train. Some models of various tractors are known for a certain 'third gear whine' under load at wide open throttle. Some are just noisier than others. Some you hear the drive train over the engine noise and others you hear the engine over the drive train noise. Go figure.
All in all its a quick video that will let you see the inside of a transmission and how the power is transferred to the rear wheels via a series of gears and differential. Nothing in extreme detail though, but if you've not seen the guts of a 65 year old tractor it could be interesting to you.
This whole series started out as a quick 'first start' type video and grew into an unexpected series of 'extended service' videos for the old gal. Its ok though, because all things old and neglected need a little TLC and I find entertainment in providing entertainment for you. Now bear in mind, with nothing prepared at any time during the recording sessions you can expect verbal abuse in the terminology department on occasion. I may not always call an item by an accepted name or describe a sequence or process EXACTLY as it relates to the subject but it is not intentional. There are a lot of things you can 'take to the bank' in the videos I put up for entertainment purposes, but I do reserve the right to call for 'poetic license' when such previously described gaffs are found by the discerning viewer.
Remember too that in this world you get what you pay for and considering this is free, you shouldn't expect perfection anyway. Butttt.....I do my best at imitating it.
The series is rapidly drawing to a close, but the next one will involve using a candle to remove a broken stud. How...??....you may ask, well if you are not aware of the technique after the next video you will be. But only if you stop by for a visit to check it out. Hopefully you'll swing in for the candle lighting ceremony.

Taking pictures for reassembly is how I am able to work on something for a year or two with any hope of remembering what goes where.. I like taking measurements and drawing sketches with dimensions so I have that to fall back on. This is my first look at the inside of an H. They are nice machines. Erving Smith was my friends Grandfather. He had an M. When we were 10 we would go to his farm and spend a week or two in the summer. Serving would drag us around the farm on an old mower deck. My first tractor was an 8N. Then the little Farmall B. If I could have found an M or an H I would have bought it, but most of them are still used as pump power for irrigation or filling silos. I am really enjoying this series. Thanks! 😁😎

Well darn it anyway...I'm GLAD to hear you've been following the series. If you made a prior comment I either don't remember it or it went into the spam file. I got an email the other day that said one of my comments to you was undeliverable though. Don't know what the heck that means. LOL. There's a lot of room inside those cases. Imagine what that'd look like if it were hydrostatic. It'd be full of stuff that I couldn't fix !!

@@tractorman4461 Comments are a snafu most of the time. I set up the "Hold Area" so I wouldn't be getting as many porno tags. They were changing their pattern every day or so just so they could get past the barrier. I thought I had them finally knocked down but they still show up occasionally. With all the widgets and gimmicks that YT sets up some of the regular comments get knocked into the hold folder. Anything with a link will. Another thing that happens is if I am answering comments on my phone I can swipe over one button and hit three others on the way. I have deleted some comment so I might be me all along. 😁😎

There's always one stubborn bolt in everything it seems. But the trick is burn it in HOT as you can with an oversized nut if possible...as it cools, drop a 50-50 concoction of acetone and automatic transmission fluid all over the cooling bolt. Nine outta ten it'll come out. But in a video coming real soon you'll see another trick I use continually with a super high success rate. Thanks Bob for stopping in for a comment.

You'll get to see just a little more of it in the next one. I had an interesting problem to solve that may help a lot of guys that haven't seen the technique used before. The closer I look at this H, I'm beginning to think for sure that your's is mechanically the better tractor. I think the engines are both comparable as to condition, but after driving this one around and then getting to actually SEE the internals, I think your drive train suffered much less abuse than this one. Yours shifted much better and just had a tighter 'feel' to it.
@316jd140

@@tractorman4461 My H shifts a lot better than my B and the C that I gave to my nephew. Clutches on these is a big factor on how well they shift, in some instances. I believe the C that I had probably will need a new clutch disk and throw out bearing down the road. My B shifts better now than it did before I replaced the clutch when I replaced the flywheel in it. It still doesn't shift as good as the H.

Thanks for showing us and explaining how the shifter parts works on those transmission gears.
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 3 года назад
Well Ramon, that's a 'cliff notes' version, but the basics are there anyway. There are some tractors that are known for having their transmissions lock up. What happens is when they get pretty worn and you move the lever too fast, it'll slip out of one slot and into the other without fully allowing the first slot to return to the full neutral position....so when you let out the clutch, the gears are bound together and the tractor won't move. Usually, removing the shifter like shown, the 3 shifting rails can be manipulated back to the neutral position and all is good.

Dad had a 1952 Super H he bought new in 53. He didn’t have enough money for the new tires on it. He bought it without rear tires and put a set of 3/4 tread tires he had on it. Or so the legend goes. I wasn’t born until 64.

Well I can understand the lack of funds. We ran an old 1941 Massey Harris 101 Super for 30 years with a patch over a 3'' diameter hole (from running over a stob). The old man used 1/4'' stove bolts and bolted a thick piece of rubber about 6''x6'' over the hole from the inside, cutting the threads off flush with the nuts on the outside between the treads. So yes, people made do with what the could do it with back then.... Thanks for the awesome comment.

Even now those 38 inch rear tires are still pricey. Ive never bought a new rear tire for any Tractor ive owned. Once I went to the Annual FFA auction. It was pouring rain. But I stayed in my truck and watched. When they got close to a pair of 13-6-38 tires mounted on Ford rims. I left my dry place and got soaked . However I bought the pair for $30. We went back Sunday and got them. And promptly mounted them on Farmall rims and put them on my LP M. They where originally the outside duals on a tractor worn slick but also one side worn down more than the other. Any Road that was almost Twenty years ago and they are still on that tractor. As long as they are Round & Black and holding air Im Happy.

Yes you indeed got it cleaned out. And now know what in there. I think you where curious to see what it looked like anyhow? I seen my father pull a trans top off his first H. We had a 1937 unstyled B John Deere. And Up Graded to a 47 H Farmall. My father observed my just a little bit older brother driving across the Hay field in 5th gear wide open. Barely had it in control. So up under a Shade tree it went. and using a chain hoist the trans top was taken off. All the fluid drained. And dad took the cutting torch and removed all the teeth from 5th gear. So it then had two shift lever positions where there wasnt any foreward movement. 4th gear was as fast as she went. Dad made certain that Him or I didnt do that no more times!

@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 3 года назад
Oh man...that's a handy little bugger. Its a 3/8 'butterfly' air impact. It's not got the torque like the big ones, but it is real fast to run bolts in or nuts on and diminutive in size with the typical flex connection on the air hose. Its called a butterfly because the 'fwd-rev' control is on a rocker the full length of the back of the tool so its super easy to hit it with any finger in any position. The control kinda looks like butterfly wings. LOL If you can imagine a butterfly in the middle of a greasy truck or tractor repair....

Well like my one mechanic friend always told me...."It'll only go back right one way!" I put a three cylinder motorcycle engine and transmission back together one time and I had a thin spacer about 3/8'' left over. I asked my friend if he recognized it....he said and I quote: "You'll find out when you stomp the kick starter." Yep it was the spacer that held the kickstarter pawls in line with the kickstarter lever. It wouldn't engage normally. For the remaining years I owned that '75 Kawasaki 500 I had to stand on the right side, bike tilted to the right, and kick with my left foot !! That's the only way the kickstarter pawl would engage !! So I learned my lesson that day about paying attention to the details....LOL.

What gasket material did you use for the transmission? Is there any way to prevent water from getting back in there?
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 3 месяца назад
Its a non-gasketed surface. I suspect the depressions around the heads of the bolts holds water and snow and the water makes its way around the threads a little at a time over a long period. I thoroughly cleaned the housing and the bolts, installed new washers and slathered the bolts with antisieze for re assembly. In retrospect, a coating of form-a- gasket would probably have been a good idea. If these tractors sit outside, the best thing is to keep them thoroughy tarped.
