I don't think that's true. The reason they dont dredge the dykes is to make the land up stream flood and hold the water from getting downstream. Under heavy rain there is not enough capacity to take all the water run off from all the houses built on flood planes, so they flood up stream.
@hollydforce

This is a whole country problem. They’d rather spend money going up rather than basic digging ditches. Ditches, Becks, Rivers all half full of silt.. said they only dug them out half the flooding we get wouldn’t happen but no they’d rather build multi million pound concrete to please people who haven’t a clue but it looks good

Here, In Belgium, that all changed. You're not allowed to put concrete/asphalt everywhere you want because of drainage to avoid overflowing the sewer system. The sewer system is also doubled up to rain water and septic water on most places. Rivers have their fixed flood plains back. When you sell a property, there is a section in the contract that handles that too. So it's managed at least. Maintenance of ditches and brooks is still an issue though.
@foxcompaq
@foxcompaq 8 месяцев назад
You haven't got a clue do you? The EA objects to houses being built on floodplains constantly, but they're overruled constantly due to a need for houses, then they are blamed when they flood! Get a grip. Why would the EA want houses built where it's known to flood?

Having cleaned a few ditches by hand in the past, I know you can't work properly in a ditch full of water. Also, the best place to start is where the water empties out, That way it is running away from you and emptying as you work up the ditch. Water only runs down hill, and ditches need to be cleaned regularly and often. We need water to grow crops but we also need to be able to get it away when we have too much.

Arh Tom your Dad is a legend! I wish every farmer/land owner had your Dad's perspective, I work for my local authority on the drains and I'm always butting heads about elevating flood water with basic maintenance and you and your Dad are on the money I could fix 80% of the problems in my area if I had a small excavator and a chain saw for about 2-3 month with access to the dykes, ditches and culverts on public and private land what really is annoying is the land owners don't understand it will benefit themselves to let us on and the powers at be to give authorisation to let me undergo the work it would save them all a fortune over the years and would make the environment flourish. I'm with you that there's an hidden agenda, a little bit bad weather are now called storms and given a name, politicians are banging on about climate change causing flooding is total lies the problem is lack of basic maintenance due to authorities not spending a little extra bit of the budget which they would recoup over the years anyway it's ridiculous

Would you consider planting an Alder hedge along the ditch edge? They are a native British species that usually live along river banks that shore up the soil structure to stop erosion. As it's planting trees, could you get a grant for it? It also improves soil quality by introducing nitrogen, and they drink! They drink a lot!

Who would pay for the planting, the maintenance and how much more land would be lost? They can't get the tractors and chopper into the edge of the fields with trees because of the over hanging branches so it would need cut every year. If the EA don't dredge the ditch they sure as hell aren't going to do hedge cutting.

It's like that all over. We have a drainage pipe in addition to an open ditch running through our property that the City put in 45 years ago to relieve flooding. In those 45 years we have only seen the City maintenance crew once and that was about 43 years ago! The 16 inch drainage pipe must be more than half filled with silt and the ditch is barely visible. This is in Michigan, USA.

What you were looking at there was exactly the same issue that they had down in Somerset with the terrible floods 2 or three years back. The Agency was shamed into fixing that problem, caused entirely by lack of maintenance and this year they have been much better. I can remember that 60 odd years ago when I lived in UK "bankmen" were employed locally who worked constantly to keep the rhines and ditches clean. They just never got into that state because working men who knew what they were about never let it become a problem. Progress? I think not.

Tom - great educational video, thanks. Here's a crazy thought for you, wouldn't you think that the EA would be ensuring that these gullies were 100% clear at least a couple of times a year - and that they'd then congratulate themselves by sticking a little water turbine somewhere towards the outlet and draw a little bit of energy off it? They are, after all, called the Environment Agency, aren't they..? If we didn't know any better, you could almost imagine that they're ALLOWING this to happen so that they can then just point at 'The Narrative' and that we're all "doomed, I tell thee - DOOOOOOMED!!!" I mean, imagine that they're other Gov budies, Public Health decided to start scaring the shite out of everyone due to something that had a mortality rate of 0.4% and shut the whole economy down as a consequence .......oh, bugger. ive said for years we need to dredge years ago a river near me was 3 to 4 feet deep now you can paddle across ,so how can 15 ft of flood water go through with out bursting its banks . great video keep up the good work

You both said it perfectly. The people who should be sorting this problem have probably thrown away money elsewhere and not prioritised the drains. Its a very short-sighted way of looking at things. A lot of the problems we have these days are through lack of maintenance, simple as. I can't blame your dad having a rant, but it must feel like banging your head against the wall as no one listens!

Harrumph! I hardly think proper diversity training is throwing money away. What if someone’s feelings were hurt by mis-gendering them?

Great video Tom! Such an important issue. Same problem here all over Ireland with rivers and drains not cleaned out. Floods are destroying land, wildlife, habits and livelihoods. And people here are being prosecuted for trying to solve the problem and maintain the rivers and drains. Things need to change

Tom totally agree with you. We are fortunate to get ours done every year. Give it 4 months and it is back to the same way as before. As your father said to many in the nice office and not enough out working.

I fully agree that the ditch needs maintenance. I however question how it is being cleared. Removing the reeds from the bank is causing the banks to fall in. The center shall be cleared and what is being cleared should be layed against the reeds on the banks so that the banks can grow in again. Clearing all the way will only cause more erosion.

Fascinating insight Into poor maintenance from the water people agency. One wonders when we see areas being flooded are symptoms of a similar poor management. But they would never admit it. Thanks Tom and Dad. 🤓

Love this Video Tom! You & your Dad are spot on with everything youve said. I look forwards to videos such as these as its highlighing a clear problem. This is a huge problem all over the UK. Due to money cutbacks most will now never get cleaned/ dredged out and they wonder why everywhere floods much more often. Clean them out and it will prevent alot of flooding. Multi million pound flood defenses are required in certain aspects but for the most part a simple job like this will massively reduce the risks. You only have to look at Holland. They dredge theres out every year to prevent flooding. 👍👌

The video you made about the flaws in the drainage system in your area made me diced to study civil engineering and specifically water management and fluid dynamics. Amazing videos and keep up the good work 👍

Hi Tom and dad My grandad was a skipper on a chane dredger one of many that dredged the river ribble from about 1920 to 1952 when he retired. My dad tells me that grandad said it was a hope less job thousands of tonnes of silt a day taken out to the sea, and it would be pushed back in with the rough wind and tides. He said a good rain fall in the mountains and Ribble valley would do more good than 4 dredgers in a week would do 😮 In the end it all shut down. You have always to keep water running away. I hope all goes well with the brooke now. I've loved watching your videos over the year's take care all the best.😊

Great Video and well said. The problem is that farmers and landowners have been saying this for the past 15-20+ years, but the government won't listen and continues to underfund the EA. Farmers know how to look after the land and the animals on it, including the wildlife, and have done so for hundreds of years, knowledge past down from generation to generation. So, let them manage the land and the waterways on their land, and have an EA consultant oversee, advise where needed and assist with grants/payments to do so. It's not difficult. The statement 'There used to be 30 people doing the maintenance and 3 in the office, now there are 30 in the office and 3 doing the maintenance' is so true and is prevalent throughout all publicly funded government organisations, this is where it needs to change. Please keep us updated and keep up the good work guys

Love the video. Totally understand your dad's frustration towards the people who are suppose to be cleaning that up. Thankfully we don't have to deal with that kind of an issue, but we have an irrigation water way system that their maintenance guy that used the same kind of machine that there & but "our" tore up our pasture last yr coming thru (after 5 yrs of us being here & even longer before that) to "clean", all he did was tore up tree's to get to tumble weeds that they could have easily just burned. This property has been developed since the 1950's at least, tree's were allowed to mature, etc. NOW, they want to put a road thru their easement, which would wipe out an old growth orchard, very mature willow. So bloody annoying.

So pleased to see this,and hear the ginger guy explain it. Fantastic to listen to someone that understands the principles of drainage, water management and flood control. John price paid a hefty price for understanding the same and acting on it, Simply because EA won’t spend money on basic maintenance, hiding behind the eco smoke screen. Keep up the good work Tom.

It's the same in the States - no basic maintenance is done - drains blocked, can't dredge streams and creeks because of some "endangered" fresh water something or another. And when it does flood, there is still no help/relief. Your dad is spot on.

Crazy such waterways, in the netherlands its mandatory to clean all the waterways before winter, otherwise we get a big fine. The fine is a real good motivator to do it
