My book, 'Kodi': www.penguinrandomhouse.com/bo...
Hello Art-family!
Just a little demo painting on location and dealing with the mentality going into a plein air painting. I think fondly of my memories of fishing with my Dad, especially as my kids grow old enough to go out now as well.
Thanks for watching and happy sketching!

Such a profound message and should be an inspiration to all artists. Your father sounds like a good man, spending time together as a family’s is so important for future development. Lovely painting.

It’s a really clever way to combine your painting process with your memories with your father ❤️ I enjoyed your speech as much as I loved the finished result

Great messages there, and exactly what I need.I am terrified of every new piece, indoors or out, and that stops the simplification and meditative aspects. I can sometimes get those later on but when I just watched this video I saw how starting, just starting, is the key to everything! I was very interested to see you using a ruler, and would love to know more about this, you seemed to be constructing some guides that you fleshed out later…. Thanks for this video, I am painting today and the simplification message on its own is golden!

Really great message and perspective on plein air painting, Jared! Definitely setting expectations. and talking about many of the possible challenges, really resonated with me. Thanks so much for sharing! 😄

Hey Jared, thanks for your thoughts, i completely agree! I started a project of painting plein air for 100 consecutive days as a way to remove an art block that i had/have. That last thing you said about, if you get just one thing right or learn one thing then its a successful day is exactly what i am experiencing at the momemnt in this project! All the best and Merry Xmas to you and your family!

I know what you mean. Sometimes a painting will just speak to you even if it’s not particularly great.

Really great video Jared. You mentioned Plein Air painting being stressful. I agree! It’s just that it’s less stressful than studio painting for me. Anymore I almost hate studio painting because I feel like it can be infinite. But in the field all those changes mean that on a given day I can only paint so much and if I’m not finished i need to come back another day to do it.

Ha, yes, I've also used the fishing analogy for plein air painting. If you can avoid stressing about landing a fish, the whole experience is generally a proper buzz. It's much better when you do 'catch' something obviously but it's definitely something I've stopped worrying about. Something I have taken to doing though is taking along my sketchbook which has some examples of small but, how shall we say, competent paintings. If anyone does stop for a look and it's not going well, I'll show them something from that thereby demonstrating that I'm not totally devoid of skillz. Not that this should matter really but it does rather soothe my ego. Yan

Yes! I've actually sold a couple paintings that way out of sketchbooks and it gives you something to chat about. :)

Jared... Love your work. Especially the watercolor plein aire work. The very large round you're using with the metal ferrule. What brand/series/size is that? I can see myself using that tool.

Thank you! I used two escodas in this. An escoda synthetic mop called an ultimo in the beginning and then a escoda perla for the second half.
