Trevor, I’m on the opposite side of the valley as you and I’m deeply saddened to see our state being overrun. Farming is dying, the Ellsworth family (arguably why the SEV is here) sold their farm and it’s becoming houses on houses. I love our state but I fear the time to move is coming.

I dont think there is a more efficient use of water than your irrigation system. People choose to be dumb by not looking for the bigger picture. Agriculture keeps those same dumb people alive. Keep doing what you are doing with these videos!
there was a study done I forget where but they went into the city and asked random people on the street where their food came from and they said places like wal mart king supers Albertsons so thay tells you city folk has no clue where food comes from. keep up the good work Trevor! 👏
We went to a water resource conference at the UA to discuss ranching and multiple water use. We asked the group if they could think of a more productive use of a limited resource of water than to grow the very food that fills their belly. They talked about golf courses and housing needs and car washes etc. That is a sure sign that the city folks have no idea about the true source of the food they consume, the clothes they wear and in our case the protein they consume. They dont understand that when much of the country is under a foot of snow, that AZ is growing the majority of their salad plate among many other things. As housing consumes the usable farm ground, they are building on the very ground that used to feed them. On our 90K acres we provide over 70 year round water sources to wildlife that would not have them without agriculture. The general public is very ignorant and unfortunately spoiled on the ease at which they fill their refrigerator yet quick to complaint about those that spend their lives growing their food. What slope do you run on your fields. Lot of people in se nm using side roll and pivots but some still use established flood ground. Looking at putting some 30+ yr old ground back in and liked the way yours was watering watching drone fly. Looks very efficient!!!
Pre 1900… 75-80% of the population was involved with farming. 1920’s … Down to 60 % 1960’s… Down to 30% Today…. Less than 2% of our population are involved in agriculture! And that number is shrinking! Average age of a farmer… 60 years old! My numbers may be off a little, but not much. God Bless everyone who goes out, rain or shine, hot or freezing, day or night, to keep us fed!
I’ve noticed that it’s not just computer chip factories taking over the land and water. What used to be farmland on the 303 north of I-10 is turning into nothing but huge distribution warehouses and some new neighborhoods. Pretty soon, there won’t be any lane left to farm out there and people will still wonder why there’s a water shortage.
Trevor you talked about your region being extremely productive per acre. Would you mind sharing some numbers of total tonnage on say a good field of alfalfa or so? Just for comparison (natural rainfall here in Ohio lol) we are pretty happy with 4.5-6 ton (very productive ground) over 3-4 cuttings.
Yeah! I wish I knew more about corn and wheat, I can ask around. But for alfalfa you see 10 ton to 13 ton average, what makes the difference is the soil or water quality. Or a year like this where we miss 3 cuttings due to rain. Cotton does well here too. 4 bales per acre is very common. Some guys will get 5 on good soil.
@@BalesHayFarmandRanch Most of the hay I see getting trucked into Northern CA comes from Nevada, in the desert. The alfalfa grows better out in the desert. There's big rotators out there and the combination of the sun and climate is amazing.
Its a shame Trevor but what you said its the truth. The Irrigation district cut our Irrigation water in the lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas. We own and lease out a bit over 1000 acres of irrigated improved pastures and farm land. And like you we have been farming for years before cities came to us. And now they cut our water off, the water district told us that they have to supply the municipality first. Its coming friend, good luck, I sure hope they can find food once they cut more water and stop farmers and Ranching from producing food!!!.
I grew up on a commercial poultry farm and worked in the industry for 30 years. Then in fermented foods industry for 10 years. Heard the same people. People would go nuts when they understood I worked in a slaughter plant. I would tell them, you mean to tell me you never thought about a chicken dying when took your snot nose little critters through the drive through for chicken nuggets?
As a farmer in michigan i find it interesting that we have to use a center pivot irrigation with big pumps as our land it not flat and we have big hills. all you have to do it open valve/tube and let it run.

Ppl unfortunately just don't understand. They read an article on Facebook that says we r running out of water and that's what they go by. They have no idea of the water cycle that goes on in this world. And they don't care to. In this day and age, if someone thinks they r right, they r right and b damned if u try to educate. Out of curiosity, how many times do u flood a field like that in that particular fields duration? I do believe I remember u saying that one field is only seeded once every 3 or 4 years. So is that 2 or 3 times per year, or 10 to 12 times per it's seeding to ripping it out and starting again??
It’s funny how all these people complain about “farming in a desert”, when they’ve been doing it for 100’s of years. There was never a problem until the cities started developing and taking water from the water districts. Not to mention the thousands of acre feet going into the ocean to save a smelt that’s not even native to California. Lack of infrastructure, cities constantly developing, and people that have no farming experience complaining thinking they are important is the real issue.
Have you ever thought of using a low impact soil perforation tool after a few cuttings then watering to help reinvigorate the roots and cut compaction issues.
I think I'd rather move to Alaska for the weather than Arizona (I have the body that more layers of clothes is a good thing than shedding them) plus no venomous snakes

I think there’s more than one right answer to the water situation, conservation is an unfortunate reality we face in more than one state. I’m in Idaho and find myself looking at things a bit different than I used to with the drought.
Hi if you have time have a look at Cuby Station in Australia it's one of the largest irrigation farms in Australia they grow cotton. I just think you might be interested in looking at it. I hope to set up a hay business growing Alfa we call it Lucerne in 2023/24. This will be dry land Alfa / Lucerne. Love your RU-vid program
When us snowbirds come down there we can only handle small squares to feed our steeds as we don't bring any equipment with us to handle rounds or large squares. LOL Evidently the simulator didn't take that into account :-))))
Okay is true that us farmer use water, but most of the time came from river or use water, we use it to re incorporate to the soilsystem. So the water go back to the land.

Wait until the anti's get onboard with some endangered species, like they did here in the Klamath basin...same thing..districts & projects built before 1910 now being either severely cut back or shut off from irrigation water because of a fish that lives in our main reservoir that keeps declining in spite of the fact that the lake levels have been kept several feet above pre colonization levels & it hasn't helped the fish a bit...sad to look out & see a reservoir 30 miles long & 10 miles wide full of water & we can't irrigate our crops.!??
Swimming pool lawns homes do not return to the auqifer, ag water does. Pinal county wells are 700 ft plus. Going to cost me $100k just for the hole for my well as we lost CAP water as of Jan 2023.

My kids dad family lost several properties to eminent domain for a computer chip manufacturer... one property had been in the family for 4 generations and probably more if not for this although it's sad I understand the need for the computer chips in today's world... also sad to see it so close to home... not to mention everyone trying to relocate last year when the housing market was crazy...

Really? Where is your proof? Is it better to be used in a evaporative cooling system in a warehouse? Our water is pumped from the ground and put right back on the ground. We’ve been doing it like this over 100 years on this exact farm.
Industry and businesses also consume a lot of water. It doesn't make much sense in a very dry area either. That's right. But I don't know if it's so smart to flood the entire field in an area with heavy evaporation. These farming methods date back to a time when water had no value at all.
@@traderjoes8725 it doesn’t evaporate as much as you’d like to think. I can get you numbers. The district does studies every year. And you’re right. Water had little value. But guess who paid for the water infrastructure? The only way the SRP could work is from farmers paying for it. No one had a problem with farmers until the cities grew. But we are still very efficient. Take this number. I might have said this on the video. The acres this district covers 25,000 acres uses 140,000 acre foot of water that goes back into the soil per year. One microchip plant uses 40,000 acre foot a year, and that plant sits on 10 acres. And their water goes up into the air. 100% of it. I’m pretty sure microchips can be made anywhere. The quality of alfalfa we make, can only be made here.
@@BalesHayFarmandRanch I think it is much better to use water for agriculture than for golf resorts. Still, far too much good farmland is converted every year into, e.g., parking lots. No farmers, no food. That should be common sense.

All I'm saying is, you don't grow oranges in Minnesota. I'll never understand farmers that voluntary set up shop in dry arid regions, and than complain they are in a drought. That would be like a car painter setting up shop in the rain forest than complaining about the humidity. You rarely see corn in Canada, season isn't long enough. Used to really like this channel, now it's just complain complain complain.
