My children would agree with Will. They are now 19,21 and 24. We've lived in a modular home on 10 acres for 19 of those years. We homeschooled here for all of the years, had Christmas and birthdays. Learned to ride bikes, feed animals, watch deer out the windows and say prayers each night. A few years ago my husband and I told our children that after they move out that we are going to sell this place and downsize. All of our kids said " Noooooo, you can't sell it ! This is our home !" I didn't realize how attached they were to it. ❤ Shaye, We don't have a fancy place either but it's HOME.

"Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without" --wise Aunt Leslie I love the pots and pans display. I used to tend to save things for special occasions so things stayed put away until I actually lost them all without ever enjoying them. I use everything all the time now! 😂For anyone reading this, instead of waiting for the special moment, let the things create special moments (like the mealtimes you'll think back to years from now or remember when you repeat them with the grand kids). The mundane things that we do or use often end up being the things kids remember most & attach significance to as adults. Use it up, wear it out...

Over the years, if i had a need or storage, etc, I would tell the hubby..." come up with a way for me to store milking items that are close to kitchen'...he would ponder it, sketch an idea,run it by me and eventually problem was solved❤

Having a fresh, clean, inviting, vaccuumed Sewing Room/Quilting Room, dusted and windows opened , fabrics organized...gives me a clear head, a new outlook, and gets the creative juices flowing... a disorganized dirty space just creates confusion and anxiety in the creative part of my brain! So I totally get it with regard to your kitchen! It just seems to 'give permission' to beging something new, a fun project...

I loved the comment your son made about the house. I had a similar comment 30+ years ago when my 10 yr. old daughter watched me running around like a crazy person try to pick up our home before company came. She said "mom, our house isn't messy, it just looks like our family lives here." Of course, that stopped me dead in my tracks and I wanted to burst out crying hearing her simple, child-like statement. Since then I realize that company comes to see us, not the way I keep my home. Loved the brass pot system, didn't think I would like the blue, thought it would look a little dated but you nailed it (no pun intended) It is really beautiful. Home should feel like "Home" all the things that hold memory, that feel cozy, comfortable, and tell a story about the people who live there. Thank you for sharing.

You feel like you're "ready for battle". I never thought of it in those words but that's the feeling isn't it. Like, "bring it! I'm ready." sort of feeling. When we were all locked down a few years ago everyone was panicking at the market. And I thought, "Geeze! Do I need to be worried? Let's see...nope....I have more than two months of food in my pantry and refrigeration. I was good to go. And we ate from what we had and we were just fine. So I'[m ready for what's to come as much as I have space for and I'm pretty proud of it.

What a wonderful simple idea (and I mean this in the best way) that takes a beautiful shade of blue shelf with hanging rod beneath to double your storage space for pots/pans and not take up much valuable space. Kuddos to you both. I may have to do something similar in my kitchen so thank you for the visual idea.

Way to make that copper collection POP 😲 I love it! We used to own a house and I was in my “modern” era (I actually just didn’t know what I liked and simple designs in neutral colors felt safe) before selling and moving into …..a white/gray rental 😩😂. I can’t wait to own a home again AND I NEVER WANT TO SEE WHITE AND GRAY AGAIN 😂. Until then, I will continue collecting pieces I love and living vicariously through people like you haha

Good observation, Stu, about how homes are bought with resale in mind and how that will automatically affect how to plant yourself. Living nomadically even while trying to have the American Dream... I agree with you--I'd rather have a home than a magazine-cover-ready house.

We had to downsize some years ago so had to keep our home clean and tidy and, above all, neutral for potential buyers. I am so over neutral! Our new home is the way we want it ie colourful and not always tidy (it’s usually clean!). You new shelf is just lovely. Xx

The shelf is beautiful. You will love having all your pots close by. And yes as they get older oh the food they can eat. Also I read this the other day, it was about sewing but I think it is about life. Don’t worry if what you do is not perfect and you have some mistakes it helps to remind you that you are not perfect only God is prefect

What a beautiful addition to your kitchen! That blue just speak to my heart! 💙We have an old kitchen with a blue countertop. I remember wanting to replace it so badly when we first moved in but I have since appreciated its "calmness" and "hominess". The previous (deceased) home owner had kept this home well that we want to keep it that way. We are grateful as we all know how expensive it is to do any home renovation especially when you have to hire out for the jobs. You and your love have created a haven for your family. It is beautifully and uniquely yours! 💙💛💙💛

It is actually pretty simple, a marble plate with the mechanism glued to the bottom. This one was gifted to us when we shot our Food Network pilot. Do a quick search online and you will find lots of really unique options.

I really envy you your huge huge kitchen! Our house is about 1200 sq ft in our kitchen is probably a third and a half size. It's nice when you have room to have those big collections. I wish I had more room but as I get older I'm also downsizing more stuff

We have made some adjustments through the years to maximize the space. It’s the hub of the house so it is nice have a little more space.

I adore your home!! I have a pegboard wall for my pots like Julia Child had made by her husband Paul in their Cambridge, Massachusetts home. Not everyone likes it, but I love that I can get my Pots and Pans easily

Yes. I think something important is lost when we don’t make home a priority. This will understandably have a unique look from person to person and family to family, but being aware of the importance and priority of home is a driving focus for us.

Great job. I don’t get to use it unfortunately but looks lovely. Love your attitude about making a home. It takes time and live and thought. I feel that today somehow we are expected to have a show case home from the get go. I feel bad sometimes that mine isn’t so your attitude has reassured me that my slow and steady approach is what makes a home

I love what you have shared about the slow evolution of your homestead. I live in a city but my husband and I have taken a similar approach to caring for our older home during the past 20 plus years. We have been very slowly renovating our kitchen, using antiques and vintage finds and a lot of DIY. Your kitchen is one of the best I've ever seen with its warmth, charm and efficiency. May I ask why you don't have venting over the range? I like the look but have been dissuaded by others from doing this myself.

Thank you for the kind words! We had moved the stove a couple of times before it found this final place. We were just talking about the possibility of putting in a vent hood but for us the bulkiness of it I think would interfere with our set up. We have two big windows that we open when needed. It’s isn’t quite as convenient or efficient as a vent hood though.
