Hey everyone! Welcome to my channel and thanks for watching the "Modern Farmhouse Dining Table Part 3 - The Finale! Where I show how I completed the epoxy, sanding, finish and assembly.
I can't even begin to describe the feeling of completing this family table. The idea of building a family table has driven a lot of my desire to take my woodworking to the next level. A table as large as this was quite the undertaking and my current tool collection did not match my vision at the time and I knew that if I wanted to produce a quality table that I would at least need to add to my collection to get the results I wanted. I still had to make compromises, after all we can't all go and get our dream tools just to fulfill project needs. I finally made it to the correct balance to achieve what I wanted. Along the way, I was able to dip into other projects while I continued working on the table. All in all from vision to table it took about 2 years to get here. Some may think that is crazy but I obviously took my time. Woodworking is not producing instant results, it's taking your time and savoring the journey of each piece, each technique used.
In this finale I start by epoxying the 2 holes as well as 1 tear out area from when the wood was milled. All in all a quick process and despite the shots in the video, I had zero bubbles in the end as I heated the epoxy off camera. That's an important step so make sure you do that when you epoxy using a torch or flame.
After epoxy I sanded down with 120 grit then moved to lightly hand planing with my no. 6 bench hand plane. I continued to sand off camera with higher grits where it was needed and went up to 320 grit.
Once table was smooth to my satisfaction, I began applying MinWax Wipe-On Poly Satin Finish. I applied the first coat with a brush on all pieces. I sanded in between coats and then vacuumed up the dust and followed this process for 4 coats. I also applied mineral spirits in between to ensure all the dust was removed. Even though the finish is performing fabulously I'm now realizing I wish I had done 5-6 coats but I can always go back and refinish later if I want. I've also noticed on the legs that since the top is end grain that it may take more coats since they are absorbed quickly. If you decide to build this table, go with more coats on the legs.
Once the final coat was applied, for the final finish I applied equal parts of mineral oil and mineral spirits and then took a 400 grit pad from Freud, one of the reusable pads and I did a light sanding. This technique which is taught by The Wood Whisperer really does produce a superb smoothness and matte finish. Give it a try!
With the help of my wife we transported the table and began setting it up and the fit was perfect! What a feeling it was to see the table fully assembled again. I had performed a dry fit in the shop so this was the first time after table finish step that it was assembled. I can't describe the satisfaction of completing this table. I real spiritual experience. Well maybe I can describe it, watch the video til the end to find out what I mean.
Special thanks to Marissa Lea films (my wife) for the footage at the end, best collaboration I could ask for! Also, the little blonde girl and brown headed boy are not our children but the other 3 are. We were watching them for friends of ours but we were excited they were a part of the video!

Someday. I hope to experience the feeling of completing my big project too - Samurai Carpenter Workbench - starting to wonder if that day will ever come. Enjoy the "completion feeling" of your Farmhouse Table - good for you!

I saw the pocket screws attaching the apron to the top. How do you accommodate expansion? The table looks beautiful.

Undertaking a very similar build. Did you assemble in the area it will reside to ensure there is no wobble? As opposed to assembling in shop and transporting to its place?

Assembled at the location. The top and aprons are all one piece and then the 4 legs, so essentially 5 pieces. Hope that helps
