Farnborough Class D - Departing Blackbushe

To depart south from Blackbushe aerodrome, you have to transit Farnborough's controlled airspace
I had been avoiding doing this since the airspace came into effect, but it was time I gave it a go. There's a lot that happens very quickly, and being new to the Piper Arrow too, with all its complexities after take off, I wanted to be comfortable.
The flight continues down to Littlehampton, along to Brighton, north through Gatwick's class D, and then landing back at Blackbushe.

Mate, I've loved following your evolution. Here's one little tip for you, from someone with 20+ years experience in UK ATC. If the airspace you're in doesn't require you to speak to ATC, you don't need to request permission to leave frequency. It just increases radio traffic for you and the controller. Trust me, no controller that doesn't need to talk to you is going to complain if you just say, for example after departing Blackbushe, "G-ZR, switching to Farnborough, bye". ATC wants to get rid of you as soon as possible, and you should be switching to your next frequency as soon as possible. If you're in range of the next agency and not under a a control service, just go! Say goodbye. If they have anything important for you, they'll tell you.

I was thinking the same. I always used to use QSY Farborough - bye - though don’t seem to hear QSY used as much nowadays. Another great video though

It is a sign of the days we're living through that Gatwick is less busy and more relaxed sounding than Farnborough. The airfield at Farnborough (in contrast to the control centre) gives me the impression of being a snobby corporate jets only place, like Biggin Hill seems to aspire to be too. All the same you did a good job of navigating their control zone.

I think you are right. We might have peaked though, people were flight shaming and commercial flying was starting to decline, covid19 has brought that forward. Many places have tried to just have business jets but eventually it goes full circle. I don't really like the fact that there is a two tier system. If your RT is rusty then you're excluded. There should be understanding on both sides.

Came back from Florida after completing an EASA FI course, but not the rating, Covid cautions... This video's extremely useful to know the aerodrome, and its challenges, where I intend to finish my FI rating, and maybe, maybe, get a job if they like me and need restricted instructors. Of course if you go north, you've got RAF Benson too, and Odiham if you go west. Takes me back to FTA global days, requesting MATZ penetration of Odiham en-route to Oxford. 2018-19 seems a world away... Many thanks.

Thanks for sharing Jon - I think this is a useful video for anyone who is nervous about flying in Class D and/or who lacks confidence on the radio to demonstrate that it's worth the effort learning and practicing (even at home talking to oneself!) and although it comes at you quickly at Blackbushe following departure it is very well organised and procedural. To echo some of the comments below while commercial traffic is light I have received what I'd describe as an enhanced level of service from LARS providers with handovers arranged between neighbouring zones, transits offered etc... without having to ask. GA is undoubtedly keeping ATC providers active and in practice for their roles when it does become busier again.

Very nice Jon - your new Piper seems a lot better equipped than the last one - well done. The controlled airspace transits were very interesting - quite a privilege to be able to go over Gatwick. All that new Farnborough controlled airspace really does mess things up these days - what a congested area we fly in.

I think it's actually easier than it used to be when you had to freecall Farnborough after leaving the Blackbushe ATZ and arrange ATZ penetration (or NOT!) while climbing /loitering above Blackbushe ATZ. At least the complex bit is while you're still on the ground, and they look after you when you're in the class D. It is complicated though, good practice for familiarity with Class D transits. We used to head West and go South through Odiham MATZ, but that takes you closer to the potentially very busy Lasham (and Odiham) glider sites. I have the 2 possible clearances already printed on my kneepad, the 2 VRPs added to the Garmin 430. Great video as usual and a very useful resource for the Blackbushe Airport website I would have thought. Nice job finding Tongham, I think I would have needed a vector. PS Now try it again in IMC!
@TheFlyingReporter

Great job as usual Jon. 1 tip I would suggest is to always copy clearances whilst stationary to ensure you can concentrate on what they are saying and avoid any taxiing deviations! You can always tell ATC to standby whilst you get to a convenient place (e.g. holding point E in this case) and then report ready to copy.

Hi Jon, Another great video. One observation, and please it is just food for thought. Did you consider waiting until you were at the holding point, stationary with the park brake on before taking the clearance? It would reduce your workload somewhat. As I say absolutely not a criticism, just an observation. I really enjoy your videos.👍👍

Joining from the south at EGLK has always been a bit hairy where the R/T is concerned even without the CTR - I always tried to get a frequency change no later than overhead the Farnborough runway but there was one occasion as a solo student when I couldn't get a word in with Blackbushe because someone was waffling on frequency and kept fluffing their readbacks and I ended up not contacting BB Info until I was already deadside. I just kept an extra-good lookout and made sure I got the call in ASAP. As my instructor said when I asked him about it afterwards, there wasn't much else I could do - orbiting would have been riskier because of the potential for traffic wanting to depart to the south buzzing around in the overhead while waiting for a an overhead transit of Farnborough to be approved - and you can't just stop & wait!
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter 4 года назад
It is a problem Stephen. I think Blackbushe is understanding of this, but I don't want to get an infringement on my record. You could go a bit east or west to avoid, but they're tight gaps.

@EuroAviators
@EuroAviators 4 года назад
Another well made educational video! But oh dear, you guys in the UK make a simple class D transit highly complicated. Maybe the responsible people from NATS should do an internship in France or Scandinavia to make stuff a lot easier. What about Heathrow these days? Can you do a transit or maybe even a low approach/pass there or do they still refuse such requests?
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter 4 года назад
They use Class D over here like a higher class of airspace. You can transit the Heathrow CTA, so long as you can glide clear, so I wouldn't do a low approach to Heathrow.
@paulejbuckley
@paulejbuckley 4 года назад
It’s more like a class B transit in the US
@EuroAviators
@EuroAviators 4 года назад
Thank you both for the explanations. I'm just curious why they make a clearance for a non-airliner airport like Farnborough just (almost) as complicated as for Gatwick or Heathrow. Nonetheless, it was very interesting to watch!
@F70100
@F70100 4 года назад
With ATZ’s sharing a common boundary, a freecall doesn’t sound like a recipe for success when joining Blackbushe from the south. It’s an ATZ infringement waiting to happen. ATC acknowledge the need for hand overs when going south... Nice video Jon 👍.
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter 4 года назад
It is a risk of course, and it would be good if there was two way coordination (north as well as south), however, there are places you can go and hold if you need to, but you need to have your eye on the ball.

Do you need to pre-notify for the Class D in/out of Blackbushe or just call and hope for the desired routing? I was looking at this before the lock down and seem to remember from the plates that there is a limited number of aircraft permitted in the local flying area part of Blackbushe's ATZ which might limit how many aircraft can be on transits at any one time.

Nice one Jon, I've flown around Blackbushe a few times but haven't had the confidence to do it after the introduction of the Class D. I wanted to ask you about your video equipment: do you leave your GoPros on all the time, in flight, or do you turn them on and off remotely? If the latter, how do you do it? I mean that initial class d clearance would be nearly impossible in a helicopter, where we can’t take our hands off the controls to write down such clearances. Would either need to write it down before lifting, have a very good memory, or depart north and request zone transit from farnborough after takeoff. Not ideal.

I can't help thinking that the whole way we communicate get clearances is very old fashioned and really has its roots in single channel radios from the 1930s. There must be a way to greatly simplify it. At the end of the day it's all about aircraft not being in the same place at the same time and to do that you need to know where they are and where they want to go. I think this is possible with no audio communication at all. It's crazy and dangerous to write down such a complicated clearance, far better to simply have it on the dashboard and visually shown on the map. Then again once the CAA got involved it would be too expensive and not allowed on any aircraft.

@6:02 I am concerned at that farnborough controllers phraseology. It is not standard. He literally says "GCBZR confirm you hav got clearance to transit..." and his tone is more of a question as though he is asking if you have clearance. . It should be unambiguous - he is giving you a clearance to the next clearance limit. "GCBZR is cleared to transit etc" I personally think that should be MOR for non standard phraseology
