@@rabindrapokhrel4777 Do you like jacksfilms? He talks about how your flag isn't flag shaped, but as stated in this video, Switzerland and Vatican City aren't either, they're square.
Kosovo deserves to be independent, as that is what the people there want. Simple as that. Crimea is more complicated because “what the people want” is harder to determine uncontroversially.
@@thatoneguymatt987 I dont know man, my personal favorites have always been Canadas and South Africa, a close second being Brazils. I think our flag could be better if we got rid of the red and made something similar to Canadas, two green sides and in the center the image of the fruit of the pear cactus.
As an Indian it is kind of awesome neighborhood. A double triangle, a dragon, a lion up for a swordfight. Pity Sikkim joined India or they had a cool flag too
@@gazpachopolice7211 Can I ask? What color is on the top, orange or green? It really seems confusing to me because some people says green while others says orange. I already know the white and the drawing on the center tho
Really excited about this video, it's been one I've been wanting to make for years, so I'm glad I've finally gotten around it doing it. In this video, I look at some of my favourite flags that I've come across over the years. After listening to an audiobook about flags, now seemed like the perfect time to finally make my vexilollogy video. Audible is the sponsor of this video, and right now they're doing a special holiday offer in which you can get 3 months of Audible for just $6.95 per month. Signing up via my unique link really helps out the channel - audible.com/wonderwhy At the end of the video, I recommened the audiobook "Worth Dying For: The Power and Politics of Flags", written by Tim Marshall (author of the fantastic Prisoners of Geography). Would highly recommened both of them. Really hope you all enjoy this video, it was a ton of fun to make. It's always great to make a video about something that I'm passionate about! I'll have another video before the end of the year, so I'll see you all then! Thanks for watching!
as a filipino, theres a certain kind of fear evoked when we see the red of the flag on top, even if it's just mistakenly flipped by someone who has no idea
@@suwinkhamchaiwong8382 They're not unbreakable rules set down in law by the UN or something, just general guidelines that several different organizations have sorta settled on. A dragon might be hard to draw but it's also hard to forgot so it doesn't violate the spirit of the rule which is more about having an easy to remember and recognize design. The Welsh flag accomplishes this very well as anyone could recognize the distinctive dragon in that pose and the dragon has been used on RN ships.
"The flag should be so simple that a child can draw it from memory" Turkmenistan: How about a moon, some stars and these epic 4 carpet thingies? They have lots of shapes, won't be too hard to remember the detail.
"The flag should be so simple that a child can draw it from memory" Kirghizistan: Everybody knows Xbox, don't they? Edit: i made a slight error in the way the country's name is spelled, so i made it even more wrong 😂
3:28 Actually, that's almost correct. The flag of Saudi Arabia has "different" obverse and reverse sides as well, but that's only to make sure that on both sides, the inscription and the sword both point to the left, in the direction of the Arabic script.
7:00 It was not ignored. Here's my explanation on it. For short summary : Indonesia's flag never changed since Majapahit Empire. The Indonesians rejected Monaco's request to change the flag. The red and white flag was used since Majapahit era in the 13th centuries to 16th centuries. It was used in other Kingdoms too after Majapahit Empire is gone. Even when Indonesia (or Dutch East Indies) was colonized by the Dutch in early 20th, the local Indonesian people were still using the red and white flag (although they couldn't do it freely because of the Dutch strict rules). It was freely used when Japan comes to make Indonesians to like them more. Then WW2 ends, it was just used officially as the Indonesia's flag in 1945 when Indonesia declared their independence. There are hundreds of history behind the flag and it always used to represent the people who lived there, in Nusantara, so it's impossible to change it, or rather, why would the Indonesians change the hundreds of years flag from their past empire just because another country didn't like it? I think it even predated that of the Principality of Monaco too. So Monaco cannot use the "we use it first" reason. In the end they agreed with Indonesia's flag ratio is 2:3 meanwhile Monaco is 4:5. I think the shade is slightly different with Indonesia's red is brighter. Obviously, the meaning and history behind the two flag are completely different from each other. Fun fact/theory(?) : There are other flags that based on the Majapahit flag. There's theory/speculation on the US flag is based on the Majapahit flag because of the British East India Company's flag was inspired by the Majapahit's flag. There are two types of flag, the red-white flag (the banner) and the stripes (the pennant). I forgot the names, sorry. The Company probably seen the ships from Majapahit used those stripes and added the Britain's flag there. Indonesia still use the red and white stripes too for the Naval Jack. Indonesia didn't change since Majapahit Empire basically.
I think the Belarus flag is very beatiful, with the traditional pattern on the left of the flag. Many people in western Europe have problems separating all the pan slavic flags, all the red, white and blue tricolors, but the Belarus is the one standing out the most. Your blue and yellow flag is also very beautiful.
And then on the other end, You have flags like Monaco or Indonesia or Peru or Latvia or Qatar or Bahrain or any of the other tri-color ones or ones that only have two colors on it. That being said I think the flag of Jamaica is the coolest flag in the entire world. And I also think the flag of South Africa is pretty legit too 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
I'm surprised you didn't bring up one of the other key reasons New Zealand wanted to change their flag (but sadly didn't) -- they're constantly being confused with the Australian flag. The two were accidentally switched during a medal ceremony at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Hell, some people still think NZ is an Australian state!
@@Savannah_Simpson Honestly there were much better designs than the final option, the decision making in the short listing was extremely sus as like half the finalist options were all fairly ugly colour swaps by the exact same designer.
In my experience, Kiwis are pretty indifferent to their flag. I knew people there who couldn't really tell the difference between the Aussie and Kiwi flags, or at least that's what they said. Even if they were lying, that shows great indifference, which is fine, of course, but a shame just because the winning new flag was SO much better. I've seen some good alternate ideas for the Aussie flag, too. One other worth mentioning is the Chinese "Five-Coloured Flag". Either China or Taiwan should bring that one back, because both of those countries have political flags, while the Five-Coloured Flag is cultural. It's also cool and pretty distinct.
"The flag should be so simple that a child could draw it from memory." Kazakhstan, Belarus, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Turkmenistan: Huh? What did that guy say?
kazakhstan is not that hard if u compare it with sri lanka, belize, eswatini, bhutan, kiribati, haiti, uganda, central african republic, sauidi arabia, turkmenistan...
Even though the flag of Belize breaks almost all the rules, the meaning behind the coat of arms is really powerful. Everything in the coat of arms links to the slavery that Belize was in before gaining independence.
Ukrainian SSR flag (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_Ukrainian_Soviet_Socialist_Republic) has lots of red to represent the blood of people dying from starvation, a tiny yellow sickle to represent the tiny amount of food they actually have, and the blue on the bottom because *in Soviet Russia sky is under you*
They added Arabic scripture because it is the “shahada” for Islam, and Saudi Arabia is a huge symbol for Islam because it has the Kaaba. The sword is also there to symbolize justice and power. I unfortunately forgot what the green background means.
"no lettering or seals" "2 to 3 colors" I get it Brazil screwed up edit: as a Brazilian, I absolutely love my flag and I personally think it is one of the most beautiful ones in the world, everything that it represents it's really valuable for me.
I really love Canada flag 🇨🇦 ( When I was 10 I used to think it was weed 😂) btw I love my country flag more 🇳🇵 proud to have a unique shape with such a Heartwarming Meaning with Lots of history 🇳🇵🥰
As a Canadian, I have always loved your flag of Nepal. It's beautiful. As yes, there are some comical flags here, with the marijuana leaf in replacement of the maple leaf. Lol
I'm so happy to hear you love vexillology, over the years I've amassed a huge collection of flags, from mundane and modern, to historic and rare, to controversial and even proposed flags that never came to be. Is it safe to say you have one as well? Keep up the good work by the way, I've been watching your channel for years and am always excited to see you have a new video!
There s an incident reported when British empire tried to invade Nepal and the King of Nepal said "As long as there are Moon and the Sun in the sky, my Nepal will always be there in this planet. Take a good look at our flag." When the British attacked Nepal, British flag didnt exist. May be after they saw Nepali flag, they thought it was a good idea to have a flag
@@IloveRumania Which is potentially inspired by the Dutch tricolor. Which, fun fact, was what inspired Peter the Great to change Russia's flag, which in turn inspired so many of the south Slavic countries to adopt its colors and tricolor orientation.
And angry Nepalis wish to know John's location the moment he makes another joke about it. ...Part of me wants him to do it, though, just because it's one of those in-jokes that'll just keep giving.
Regarding the Romania/Chad/Andorra similarity: Another difference save for the coat of arms is that the yellow field in the Andorran flag is wider than the blue and red. But one other flag that should've been mentioned in the mix is Moldova, which should be even less surprising considering Moldova's historical ties to Romania
Theyre actually pretty good considering they actually represent something, as ugly as they are. Even if they look gross, they mean something important to someone in liberia and represents his identity very well considering their great symbolism. I would say they're better than the flag of let's say albania because it's not only a historical symbol used for the specific territorry, but actually represents the actual cultures of the area.
The Liberian flags aren't as bad irl. Literally EVERYONE has been using THE SAME shitty wikimedia uploads which I'm pretty sure were made in mspaint (which makes sense when you realise people constantly say they look like that) It's getting on my nerves how you see it in soooo many flag videos. I put the time in and found old Liberian stamps with the flags on. They still kinda suck, but not like the pictures everyone shows off all the time
Tanks and other games well the history is British colonialism, something that wasn’t very good in history, I don’t think it’s something you’d wanna remember, then again I don’t know much about the situation in Hawaii so maybe it’s different.
