As another installment on the theme of Two Perspectives, I met up with my friend Tracy Bosworth Page, while she was on a visit to New York. She had brought along a most interesting camera for her visit - the very unusual and beautiful Zeiss ZX1.
I mentioned my interest in checking out this camera and playing with it, and Since she is a Zeiss brand ambassador, she was able to wangle a loaner copy of this camera for me to use for a few days … and from that was born the idea of doing a Two Perspectives video.
The idea here centered around us doing a fashion inspired photo session in New York, where we photograph a model, Shay. We decided to limit it to not just the identical cameras, but also level the playing field in only using found light as we wandered around Manhattan.
Here’s the result - hopefully a video clip that is as interesting to watch, as it was fun to do the photo session with Shay.

Great job and great photos guys. I think that im oldschool guy, but I prefer bigger dslr cameras, as it change my perspective on photo shoot. Anyway its amazing what this Little Zeiss can do in your hands.

Thanks for doing and posting this, especially as I love watching photographers at work, and seeing the two of you alternating like you did is very enlightening! A fascinating camera for sure, but not one I could ever get gear lust for. I cannot get past the idea that one is forever stuck with that single wide (by my standards) FoV. I cannot help thinking when seeing your closeups that the only reason they work here is because Shay's lovely features are so slender. Anyone with a heavier face would just be treated unflatteringly, I think. Just as well though. At $6K USD I'd expect no less than medium format kit. But major fun stuff, and thank you for the pointers to Shay who I'd love to work with should she ever venture north to snowy Canada. 🌞

Great shots and a very inspiring video. Could be interesting to hear a little more about your settings for the different setups and also perhaps a quick comment on the post processing. Thank you for this!

Jan -- I tend to use my cameras in fairly simplistic ways -- manual exposure mode. I also shoot in RAW. Then all post-production options are open to me, and none of the camera settings aren't baked into the JPGs. That's about it.

One of the things that you'd have to get used to to become fluent with the camera, is that everything (aside from Exposure Mode selection) is done via the touchscreen. Playback, retouching, setup, etc etc. All of it. So you have to become deft with your finger swipes. The metering display was also not something I was used to -- instead of a bar graph showing zero and under- and over-exposure,. you just have a numerical display in the one corner to tell you if you are over or under. All kinds of quirks that you'd have to get used to.
