Great! I've been struggling with binding since I started quilting! Going to try your method today! Thank you! I love to make mug rugs. Your's is beautiful
I come back to this video often..because I forget the process when I haven’t done it for a while. Great job with teaching us this binding method. Very thorough. Thank you.
I love this method, it could be used for all kinds of projects. The great part is I can use my kids school glue and not have to purchase special sewing glues. Thank you for sharing! Merry Christmas!
I appreciate your humility. I just finished a quilt and a doll quilt to match with a new binding technique with not very good results. Going to try this next. You’re a good teacher
Hi lisa, my mother started a quilt one where the blocks we're quilted as you go, just the blocks now I'm going to finish the quilt , but I don't know how to put the blocks together to make a whole quilt. Do you have a video to teach me how to finish this project.
hi Sharon! Unfortunately I do not have any videos on quilt as you go quilts, however I have seen a ton of them that may help! On RU-vid search joining quilt as you go blocks with sashing...and without....there are a few ways to do it :)
I think ypu should have done one right size for video. You spent too much time repeating..I had too little fabric..too small. Telling us how to do it.but the saying " not what i will do". I agree it helful to know how to fix if you make same error..but as to teach a technique start off correctly. Voice audio is good video is good.
I'm not going to say no :) but me personally would not use minky as a binding, it's way to thick and I think you would struggle so much. Not impossible, but I would avoid it :) A larger quilt, I would quilt first then bind.
Thanks for showing this! I love the glue suggestion. I just made my first self binding lap quilt and couldn’t figure out the mitered corners from the written instructions. I will be making another one and see it I can get this technique to work fir me. I will practice on a small working piece first. ❤️🧵
Thank you, Lisa. I watched several videos before I found yours. Your tutorial for the Easy Binding (specifically the mitered corners) was great! Thank you so much!!!
Thank you for being honest about your goof because we all make them - right. Excellent how you showed how to make it work and it turned out lovely. I will make this soon. Great tutorial.
I forgot how to do this so I appreciate you making this video. You are my hero. Happy 2023 and I pray you are mightily blessed this New Year. Barb from Tombstone
Thank you so much. I was struggling with my corners all the time it was so frustrating. Watched your tutorial and boom right at the first time it worked out perfectly. Where have you been my whole life. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
I am a beginner trying to learn how to do this. I have watch several videos but yours is what I am having problem. Very narrow. Thanks. I will try. New subscriber here.
Sometimes I use freezer paper on my ironing board cover to keep the glue residue off and if you iron it on shinny side down & it sticks in place & easy to change out when needed.
Great Demo and less than an inch is what some use. I just watched Shabby Fabric's demo on using the backing as binding, and she likes using less than an inch. So you are doing great.
I love this video , and am glad to see the smaller edge. Sometimes I don't have enough either, and this helps me see how it would look. Plus learn how to do it.
Thank you, Lisa! This is just what l was looking for! Have used backing as binding in the past, but the corners never mitered, and l was always unhappy with the result.
I love using this method (backing as the binding.) I need help with this method with a 120 degree corner. It is a table runner with the "points" on both ends. Any ideas how to do these corners when the backing is your binding? Thank you!!
when do you attach the backing to the Tshirts? I am no using the filling, just making the Tshirts with the flannel. I don't quilt it either. Should I sew the pieces together just with the tying yarn between the squares first or do I run a seam around the outside to bind them together making sure there is enough flannel to fold as the binder edge? Hope you understand what I mean. Thanks
Lisa, I have not talked to you for a bit and miss it. Is there a place where I can follow you every day or at least every week so I do not miss any of your video's? I am still thinking about the Bee quilt. ;-)
Cheryl Turman hello ♡♡♡ so nice to hear from you!! If you are on Facebook, look me up by searching Lisa Capen Quilts :) I am fairly active there posting a few times at least a week. Sometimes I do live videos there and share pictures of other people's quilts ♡♡♡
I am learning so much from your videos. Thanks. Love this pattern but am wondering in this video you used the stick glue in others like the t-shirt one you used the regular elmers school glue. Is there a reason for the change.
You can use both :) I like using the glue stick when basting and the wet glue when glue basting my seams....I have better control of the bottle glue when near the edge of my pieces.
I haven't tried with fleece, and fleece can be stretchier then cotton.....but I don't see why you couldn't do it keeping in mind that you'll probably need to be more patient and work with it more to get it right
The idea and thought was good in this video, however the time spent on showing the measurement error and correction cutting was un-necessary. I would have loved to see this project done in a 1-2” edge so that the visual was so much clearer. This video would have been of greater benefit as a result. I hope you make another video on this tutorial.
I'd like to think that my videos have come a good ways since making this particular one....this is a more recent video and I walk through the self binding technique with a 1" edge: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hGIjTuVy2kM.html
I have a thick fleece backing on a t-shirt quilt. I test drove this method on scraps identical to quilt: Stabilized t-shirts, batting & fleece backing. I'm finding the fleece is a bit harder to press, manipulate and then sew. The corners are awful thick. What is your experience in using this method with a thick backing material? It works perfect with your cotton backing in the video. Would I be better off making my own binding out of a sturdy cotton??
This is such a cool method! I love the option of being able to do my binding rather than the traditional way and I like the idea of not having to cut separate binding so it I can on turn it over so etc. I will save this video for the next quilt I make because I really want to use this method. thank you for the instruction!
So I am using VERY heavy batting (thinsulate) and that makes me wonder if I should plan on more than an inch for the binding. This is my first quilt, a gift for a friend who helped me very much when I moved by packing my overloaded craft room! We are both Harley riders and I was told by her husband she had a (Harley)t-shirt quilt someone had given her and then took back and she was very sad to loose it so this is the best present I can think of to give her! P.S. It's been almost 3 years since I moved and it's taken me this long to get the nerve to try this! You have made it MUCH less intimidating! Thanks!!
It's extremely difficult to answer your question without actually seeing what you have there :) I saw your post on my FB, so if you want to share some pictures I'd be glad to help
um, ok I have a picture but not sure how to post it here. I'll see if I can figure it out or post it on FB. I have kind of figured out the thinsulate compresses pretty well so I actually think the inch will be ok. @@TheQuiltmakerHomestead ok posted on your facebook 'mentions'
I haven't tried it with minky, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't.....just check your iron settings and make sure you adjust it for the temp for minky :)
+sandhya arvind hello! Will you be stitching the patch to make it stay permanently and just need a glue to keep it in place temporarily?? Or are you looking for a permanent adhesive without stitching?
Lisa Capen Quilts hi thanks for the reply. This is the first time I’m doing a project like this. I’m not so good at sewing. So thought of gluing the patch. Do u thick after a wash the patch would come off. Or sewing is a better option?
sandhya arvind I was at Joanne Fabric yesterday....I took a look at the fabric glues. There is a permanent fabric glue made by Liquid Stitch. I have not used that specific glue before, but other glue made by Liquid Stitch and liked the results. This would be a glue I would try if you don't want to sew the patch. You could always test it on an old shirt with an extra patch, put it through the laundry and see if it works :)
Again, Lisa, such a simple but great idea! Love this! By the way, I like your cutting board with the large 1" squares. Would you be so kind as to let me know where you bought it and the name of the product? Thank you!!
Great. Thank you so much. My husband bought me a cutting board (so sweet, right?), but he had no idea what I would prefer....so, I may invest in one like yours. Hope it helps my skill level grow closer to yours!!!
