OMG I am dyslexic and really struggle with any written patterns so I follow videos, this video has blown my mind I understood all that you said about how many skein’s and found this so easy to follow, thank you so much I am now an avid fan of your tutorial’s 😊
Finally someone who is actually getting into the point and making things very clear. Thank you so much. I am beginner and things are a bit overwhelming for me with all the measurements.
Brilliant! So easy to understand in the way that you explained it whilst writing it all down. I am also dyslexic, and autistic, and the way you explained it really helped me understand perfectly. 👍👍🏆👏👏👏
I have been crocheting for 4 years. Experienced crocheters have just told me how to figure it all out. That was so discouraging to a beginner. Now I have a solid formula that will go into my binder that will be my master copy. A very huge heartfelt Thank you Tiffany 🎉 A new subscriber from 🇨🇦
Great information! I’ve been crocheting for years and still always wonder exactly how much yarn I need, and never really asked, just over bought or under buy! Thanks for sharing this information!
I second what everyone said in the comments, I overthink and make it way more complicated than it is. Now I can confidently start a project. Thank you so very much 🥰
You made a comment about starting your foundation row using a larger size hook (one up). I've noticed that my foundation row tension is a bit tighter than the rest & this should help me immensely. So often I just fly by the seat of my pants with a project. I just started crocheting this past December(2021). I've always admired items I've seen & FINALLY said "enough" & started watching RU-vid to teach myself the basics. I can't tell you how much I enjoy this art. I also have been working on loom knitting for 4+ years yet lately I've been doing more crochet projects than loom kintting. Every project, though not perfect, has taught me so much to apply toward another project. Thank you!
This is great! The one problem with both of these methods is that it means you need to buy at least one "starter skein" before you know how much you will need. Some of us live 50 miles from where we can buy yarn or need to order online. So, either we may over or under-buy initially or will need to make another trip or wait on another order to be delivered to get the rest of the yarn - and run the danger of getting different dye lots. But this is great info! Thanks!
Totally understand your situation! Honestly the BEST way to figure out exactly how much yarn you will need it to make a swatch. I have a whole Swatch Series where I show you exactly how I figure out how many stitches, rows AND approximately how much yarn I will need for a blanket project just from a swatch. But no matter what, you will have to have some yarn on hand that matches the size of the yarn you will use to figure out how much yarn you will need. With so many yarns having different thicknesses, different amounts of yards in the skein, all the different patterns, different blanket sizes AND the different stitch tension one might have, it is just impossible to provide accurate information without sampling first. 🤷🏼♀️💖🧶
Oh my goodness, thank you. This is so helpful. I never thought how easy this could actually be to figure this all out. With the right formula it works out great.
Tiffany gracias. This will help me in the future. Sometimes I have to frog a whole blanket because I make it too long and I do not have enough yarn to finish. Now I try to make them smaller and start the border with the same yarn. If it is not big enough I used colors to make them bigger. I order yarn on sale with no specific project in mind. Most of my creations are for donations and at the same time, I learned different patterns. Every time I am ordering yarn my honey tells me "Make sure you buy extra, I do not want to hear, I do not have enough to finish this project". LOL. This video will be very helpful, thank you. Papa Dios te bendiga.
Well done Tiffany and thanks. You put in so much effort! Makes sense...once u decide what yarn you like, all you need is the label criteria and then go buy all the yarn in the same dye lot. Pretty easy!
Love your explanation about how much yarn is needed to do a project! It's always done my head in thinking about this and I usually overbuy and end up with extra yarn. This is super helpful, thank you so much :)
Loved this video! I've always just winged it, and on more occasions that I care to admit had to try to match a dye lot, which is near impossible. Thank you, thank you!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video, looking at the comments I'm not alone in being incredibly grateful and happy to have this info laid out so simply and clearly. All the best for 2021 😊
I pretty much use the same formula as you do so I know how great it is but I gotta say you are a great teacher on explaining it all! Great job!!! ♥️♥️♥️
Fantastic tutorial on making correct size of blanket. I learned so much! Thank you!! I have bookmarked this video for future reference as well. Great tips will always be helpful. ❤️ 🥰
Hi Tiffany! thank you for the formula to figure this out, my only question now is how many to buy before using the one skein of yarn to do the calculations and still get all you need so it in the same dye lot number?
Yippee!!!finally someone who has taught me something useful, cant thank you enough for this brilliant tutorial happy new year to you hope it's better than the last 💝💖
This is AWESOME!! I have been wanting this information so I can make a king size blanet for my bed and just was afraid to buy the yarn because I wasnt sure how much to get. I didnt want to get to much or to little. This is so helpful thank you sooooo much!! 🐰🐰
Whoohoo. I found out how many sceins of yarn I need to make my blanket.😁 I came across this video by accident. But I am So pleased 😀 Thank you Tiffany for another great video. You explain things so well 😘
Happy New Year for 2021 Tiffany Wishing you Health Happiness & Continued Success. Thank you soo much for your time, help and loveliness to me as I taught myself crochet last few months through a tough year.🤗❤
I wish I would have found this video a few months ago when i started a basket weave blanket. Just winging it on the number of skeins. And I'm to far in to frog it. Next blanket! Thank you for the info!!
You're a genius😁Seriously math makes my brain dizzy. But you made this so I can understand. I'm excited to use this method. I've started so many blankets and ran out of that type of yarn and or coordinating colors. Thank you for this video and the printable! P.s.I can't wait for that ripple tutorial😍
So I have to make the blanket in order to find out how many skeins I need to make the blanket, hmmmm. I am not a newbie but by far not a pro but this seems a waste of time and yarn. The 4x4 swatch seems to be easier, less time consuming, & no yarn consumption. However, not everybody uses the same methods so I can appreciate how you have presented a different alternative method for all of us. Thank you
Elephant is the answer I like to watch elephants and I love watching you. I crochet a lot and make stuff for handicap schools for children. It’s called features and limited.
Haha I love watching Elephants too! Love it! Thank you so much! I'm so glad you like watching my videos. It's extra special when we can use our talent of crochet for good and help other people. Spreading love is one thing that if we did it more this world would be such a beautiful place. Thank you so much for making things for Features and Limited. I'll check them out. 😊🧡🧶
Thank you Tiffany. I do feel spoilt, you really look after us. This information is invaluable. Now I am in the know. I usually buy a few skeins of yarn, start off and hope for the best. Now I can be more mathematical about the whole process and not be inconvenienced by having too much left over or not enough!! Happy New Year.
THIS HELP'S AND ANSWERS A LOT OF QUESTIONS. MY GRANDMA AND I US TO TALK ON THE PHONE SHE WAS GOING TO TEACH ME THIS SAD TO SAY SHE PASSED AWAY THE NEXT DAY. THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS VIDEO. I CAN'T READ THE PATTERNS BECAUSE THEY ARE TOO SMALL FOR ME TO READ. SORRY FOR CAPS I'M LOW VISION. I US VIDEOS TO MAKE NEW PATTERNS.
But what if you want to buy all the yarn up front? Also, what I was hoping for is a chart that says: Mandala yarn skein - double crochet - 5.5 hook - 2 square feet, Premier Coffee Shop skein - double crochet - 4.0 hook - 3 square feet. And so on for every kind of yarn I like. Perchance, you got that info? Like maybe in an excel table? And including a couple sized hooks and few different stitches for each type of skein? That would be sweet.
Hi Mandalyn! It is absolutely ok if you purchase your yarn up front to make sure that you have the same dye lot number and that they don't run out of the color you want to use. Then go home, work out how much you will actually need to make the blanket you desire and then return any extra skeins that you do not need. That is totally fine! Oh Goodness, ya, a chart like that would be so much work. I'm talking a full 100-200 page book. There are so many different kinds of yarn, there are now 7 different yarn sizes (8 if you include the size 0 yarn). I just saw a chart showing something like 15 different crochet hook sizes. Not to mention now all of the possible dimensions. You are literally asking for a document with approximately 357,000 variations. And that is me estimating only 200 different yarn skeins. That is why I came up with this strategy so that you can figure out the math for the exact Yarn you want to use, using the Pattern that you to use, with the exact Hook you plan on using and the exact Size you want to make. It's super easy and gives you exactly what you need. 😊🧡🧶
I love the way u teach, u need to be a school teacher u would be so good at it and all ur children would learn from u. We love u, keep up the good work, can u teach us how to do the basket weave.
Thank you so much for answering the question I've always wanted to know!!! Others have tried but it was like mumbo jumbo compared to your explanation. Thank you again!
This is great, thank you! Not what I was looking for, but helpful for future reference. I was looking to determine yarn/skein amount before buying the yarn so I get all the same lot and color (changing pattern size 3 yarn to use size 6 yarn instead).
Gotcha! To figure this out you will need to have a yarn on hand that is the same size yarn you want to use on your project. For the most accurate numbers you will need to work up a swatch. Something small. This swatch will give you all the numbers you will need before you begin your blanket project. But, unless you have a yarn that is the same size as what you want to buy a bunch of, it is virtually impossible to give you accurate information. Just way to many variables. To help you out I did make a swatch series you can find on my playlist! It walks you through how I find all the different blanket size information to add to my patterns. My little secret sauce if you will. Definitely check it out! 🤗💖🧶
Thank you for this!!! I found this randomly searching for something else but because this was so helpful to a newbie like me I subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to getting to know your work and great projects! 💜💜💜
Hi Yolanda! Welcome to my channel! I am so glad you found me. How funny that it was by some random chance but I am excited for you to watch my past tutorials and join me for my new ones. 😊🧡🧶
Happy new year’s to you and your family my ? Is I am going to make a c2c throw what are the measurements for that thank you for helping so many people I appreciate you 🧶🧶🧶👀👀
I used one ball to start my sugarplum blanket (although I'm using grey, not very sugarplum 😄 ), did the width I wanted and then kept going until I'd used up the ball... then I measured and ordered the amount I needed to finish. I think I'll stick to using proper dimensions in future, to make my life easier. Sometimes you don't want 9 million balls of leftover yarn (right? 👀😄 )
Hi Tiffany! I had to chuckle when you said you make your blankets too big. I am the complete opposite, I always make them too small! One of my first blankets I made for my niece turned out wonderful and she loved it, but she very sweetly asked, “Aunt Marsha, I really love my blanket, but could you make one wide enough for a ‘regular’ sized person?” Being the shortest (and overall smaller) person in the family, I ALWAYS get the length correct, but the width, not so much. 😂😂😂
Thank you, I finally understand calculating stitches for blankets. Can you make a video for hats also? Both starting at the top of the hat, and the brim?
This is fantastic. I start my projects using foundation stitches, but I still have issues with either not having enough yarn or over buying (which if I hadn't I could have afforded investing on another yarn that have my eyes on) I do have a question though. When swatching do you only buy one skein then once you get the totals, do you then buy your remaining skeins? I was thinking of swatching with the different weight yarns, but the yardage would be different or is that where using the weight measurement comes into play?
I go by yards in a skein. I don’t want to buy one skein and then go back to the store after I use up a skein. The yarn may be gone or no longer on sale. So if the pattern calls for say 5 skeins of yarn with a certain yarn, I just figure out how many yards I need then I can look at other brands while checking the yards per skein knowing what my total needs to be. Works every time
Hello, Happy New Year, love your yarn cabinets, behind you, looks just like mine. Thank you so much for teaching and showing us how to figure out this question, great video. ❤️🇨🇦🐶
