To all that Bla-bla Guys here. For your information. Timo is one of the fastest drivers on the Nurburgring!! He is one of the two guys, who drives the Lap under 7.00 minutes!!! In a 918 Spyder. Walter was slower. And if one of you would sit next to him and drive one Lap, i´m sure that your pants are full of shit after that. That round here was only for fun and not for testing or driving the best line. Geile Fahrt Timo. Vielleicht sieht man sich bei der Eintracht wieder...;-)

I grew up driving manual transmissions, but with today's available technologies taking your hand off of the steering wheel to shift gears just doesn't make sense anymore and is arguably slower. I currently have a sports car with paddle shifters and I really like it. In full auto mode its slow but good for traffic jams. I mainly drive it in manual auto mode and do the shifting myself which really transforms the car and driving experience.
@danmobile
@danmobile 10 лет назад
But it's fun to shift the car with a stick :(
@Dylan94
@Dylan94 10 лет назад
Chris Davies I would say a real driver wants to drive the car, instead of the car driving itself while he puts his foot flat down and sits there until it's time to brake. It's totally not about outright speed, and any skilled driver isn't going to money shift it. The car doesn't even want to go in gear if the revs are that far off. The trick is to not be hamfisted, and to listen to what the gearbox and engine are telling you, instead of just trying to SLAM it from one gear to another..
@Beolex
@Beolex 9 лет назад
Chris Davies There is nothing dangerous about racing with a manual transmission, I don't know who brainwashed you to believe that. That's like saying steering wheels are dangerous because people have tendencies to over-correct their steering and crash into a wall. You can't blame the transmission for the mistakes of a few drivers. Second of all, heel and toe is not dangerous either, nor is it hard. My first car had one of the worst pedal assemblies known to man (Volvo 240) and I learned heel-and-toe in no time. Heel and toe isn't useless, nor does it detract you from driving the car. It's PART of driving the car! I'm not arguing about manual vs. PDK, obviously PDK is quicker and more "fool-proof" as you outlined, however, the average driver doesn't need PDK. Before desiring PDK, you should first desire race track etiquette. When to accelerate, when to brake, how to corner, how to correct understeer/oversteer, how to left-foot brake, how and when to use your powerband. Believe me, you lose more time due to sloppy driving than due to "archaic" manual shifts. Good driver in a manual 991 will annihilate a PDK 991 driver. These semi-automatic gearboxes, with superior shifting times, were designed for race car drivers who had consistent lap times. For example, Ayrton Senna can lap in 5:00 minutes, consistent, give or take. Therefore, if he wanted to improve his time, he can turn to things like PDK to improve his consistent lap time. However, the average driver would lap in a variety of inconsistent lap times, like 5:40, 5:25, 6:03, 6:05, etc. Therefore, he didn't need the PDK at the time, he needed actual track skills. Moral of the story: PDK will buy you faster shift times, but not faster lap times. Nothing can substitute first-hand racing experience. -Daniel 996 GT2 & 1987 Carrera 3.2

The only reasons I can think is that he doesn't know how well enough or that he couldn't get the setup right to allow for that kind of footing. The interwebs says he 42 years old so I recon he would've learned at some point but maybe he forgot, after all race cars now a days are almost all automatic.
@Skepparvagen

According to some swedish racing drivers heal toe is not the quickest way to drive. On my car it is necessary but on the GT3 4.0 maybe it is not?
@ethownzbh
@ethownzbh 9 лет назад
The only way I could see it not being the fastest way is if you're really slow with the clutch when heel toe-ing and not getting the full potential out of the engine breaking. Otherwise you are just putting unnecessary stress on your transmission.
@Beolex

AESCULAPTORmark3 He is dragging the clutch (is the correct term), in order to let the engine help brake the car and maintain momentum and keep the corner speed up, without slamming the brake on a heel-toe. Perfectly fine, though not quite as mechanically sympathetic. Racing driver after all. No farks given. He's a damn ex-F1 driver. He knows what he's doing.
@burritomaker69
@burritomaker69 9 лет назад
Don S if youre braking then you arent maintaining momentum.................just forget cars man you dont seem to understand what youre talking about.
@dons1932
@dons1932 9 лет назад
Max Power Yeah good attempt at a troll by you, dude. Sigh. You just said it yourself. If you're braking you're losing momentum, not to mention the nose dives forward, which is why he is gently dragging the clutch into the corner until the engine helps slows the driven wheels, to maintain the balance and attitude of the car without upsetting it, so he can keep the corner speed UP. You don't necessarily need to brake to slow the car down. Even lifting the throttle partially can maintain the attitude of the car without upsetting it. I race F3 and have tested Carrera Cup. Timo has raced F1. But if you want to disagree with two, real, open wheel drivers about the fastest way around - no drama's. People like you will never learn a thing. It's clear how ignorant most of these comment makers about him 'hurting' the car and asking why he isn't heel and toeing are.
@juliochavez4501
@juliochavez4501 9 лет назад
Don S any more tips on cornering fast without slowing the momentum by braking
@dons1932
@dons1932 9 лет назад
There are a number of factors. Depending what car you're in, the tricks are you want to maintain both engine speed and tyre speed as much as possible. Keep the revs up and car balanced. Big aero helps with grip to come in nice and hot, under brakes, as well as nailing your apex. People always forget part throttle exists too. You don't have to be ON or OFF. You can simply ease back the throttle without braking at all in certain situations. And then there's where a corner is situated. If there's a long straight afterwards, you can afford to brake much earlier to hammer through the apex and keep the speed up - because you'll need it. There's more time to be gained EXITING corners and on straights. But if there's another corner soon afterward, you can afford to maintain straight speed to brake very late and carry it through into the turn and apex. This is what plenty of people miss and what seperates the quick from the fastest. Not every corner is about braking late and coming in super hot, nor is every corner about exit speed being super high. The former is a big problem for most. They're TOO brave and out-brake themselves, wiping a tonne of speed where it is needed.

Heel-toe is for downshifting, he's draging the clutch coming into the corners. If he rev-matched it he could enter faster and keep the car more stable. If you just drag the clutch like that hard enough you can spin the car by locking the rear tires, aka "shift lock." Plus it's harder on the clutch.

+1 on that. In a computer game if you crash you simply restart the race. Here it's your own life at risk and operating a vehicle at this pace adds in so many more factors. It takes a fair bit of experience to get to this level, however it's best to start somewhere!!

TPMS (tyre pressure) warning, general warning (comes on with the pressure light) and full beam in the headlights. TPMS is tripped because you need the tyres under pressure when you start. They come up quickly but you can't cancel the warning light. Completely normal for a 997 GT3 on track.

I believe he's downshifting earlier than the corners so that he can keep on the gas throughout the turn, rather than downshifting late and trying to accelerate through the turn to keep speed/momentum up. Rear engine + RWD means you get the car through the turn smoothly, THEN get on the gas and use the rear grip to fly out of turns. If you try to give it too much gas through the corners, the front end gets light and you lose grip/spin because all the weight is in the rear.

its about getting this turn momentum right) notice how he turns the wheel quickly in the corner and then straightens it for counter-steering. Like a true 911 driving. He knows every single bump on this road, so he applies moe turning power while tires have more grip.
