Most of my meals are meal replacements, nutritionally complete drinks or instant meals, and they have been for the last 10 years.
These tools are incredible for a lot of reasons, from convenience to health to price.
I have tips and recommendations to figure out if you should look at integrating these tools into your life, and also what brands work for me.

ERRATA - Soya is a staple food eaten around the world forever, and enormously popular in the West for over 60 years. It's *fine*. A quick google found enormous scientific consensus that it's healthier for you than eating red meat, especially for men. I note that Soya appears to have no health effects, despite being extensively studied: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soybean#Health_effects - If I can't put your mind to rest, then you'll be pleased to learn that there are ALSO many meal replacement options from the big companies that don't have soya in, they get the protein from other plants. (and sometimes fish!) They have had to make these options available due to the 'soy boy' myth, not because of evidence. - 3:45 that should be "early ad-free AND tracking-free videos" woops!

One important aspect to keep in mind is that mastication (chewing) plays an essential role when it comes to digesting food - physically and also psychologically. Studies have suggested that the lack of mastication can cause adverse psychological effects. In other words: Monkeys need to chew to feel satisfied.

this sounds like typical bullshit psychological studys would explore nowadays and nobody could replicate (replication crisis in social studys). im pretty sure the micro biome in my gut didnt care much about my psychological state. there are some REAL physical enzymes in the saliva but you still produce saliva when drinking stuff.. the old saying "chew your stuff 40 times" that my grandparents used to say is pretty much bullshit. says sport science.. you could survive in a coma by getting sugar trough your veins. so much for that chewing part and being conscious about eating. these are physical processes not psychological. monkeys are arseholes in general.. maybe because they didnt read much KANT or HEIDEGGER. you can reflect on yourself. then maybe chewing isnt the pinacle of your day as hairless monkey.

Proper mastication is also important for maintenance of the jaw muscles. If someone really wanted to start doing a lot of meal replacements I'd encourage him or her to follow it up with a stick of gum some of the time.

@@xXx_Regulus_xXx completely agree, I noticed that when I first started making my own meal replacements, and then when I tried soylent, I found myself unconsciously 'chewing' even though what I was drinking was a liquid. Watching this while drinking huel right now! I think a massivley important "symptom" that i noticed from drinking huel for about half my meals for half a year was this: real food tasted so much better! I was in college and had the meal plan so i was eating buffet style food nearly every day. This great food soon turned into a regular every day meal which made it taste just... regular. After huel i realized that the food tasted much better because it gave my brain a chance to recalibrate its flavor profiles. I like to joke and say that huel tastes so bad (it doesnt) that it makes regular food taste great!

For the quick fill these kinds of liquid foods are fine. However mastication is an essential part of digestion and you don't get any of that when consuming only liquid foods. I'd say that for a balanced diet you still need at least some solid food to chew on. (plenny has these bars that are "ok" too)
@NoBoilerplate
@NoBoilerplate 10 месяцев назад
And huel has great food options too, if you're worried about that. As I said in the video, I don't replace all meals with this - nor do I recommend it - there's something wonderful about sitting down to a lovingly-prepared meal with friends :-)
@_DRMR_
@_DRMR_ 10 месяцев назад
@@NoBoilerplate Yeah I didn't finish till the very last bit yet, I wouldn't call those "meal replacements" any more though. That's just prepackaged meals. And I agree, these liquid meal replacements should elevate those meals that you still do prepare and sit down for to consume. The shelf-life of JimmyJoy is quite good, I still have a couple half-bags in my cupboard since years, that I still make a shake from every once in a while. However I must say that I got very much bored with them after a while. These days I rather skip breakfast and have a more extended lunch. Take some more time between work sprints instead of chugging along without breaks.

I’d love to embrace more meal replacements if they started using low polyunsaturated fats. Agricultural companies have found ways to genetically modify various vegetable oils to have almost no PUFA, but they haven’t been widely adopted due to a lack of market demand. Which is kind of surprising, consider the overlap of carnivore dieters and crunchy health zoomers who agree on almost nothing other than the fact that polyunsaturated fats cause inflammation and metabolic disorder.
@tavishlaughlin9530
@tavishlaughlin9530 8 месяцев назад
This makes no sense. No part of chewing increases the quality of your diet or the nutrients quantity or balance you receive *unless* the food is not available enough without chewing and needs to be broken down to access nutrients and facilitate digestion.. these are liquid meal replacements. No one tells you to chew your milk to make sure it's part of a balanced diet. It might have a psychological one, but lack of chewing will not decrease the nutrients content of these shakes...just think about it
@_DRMR_
@_DRMR_ 8 месяцев назад
@@tavishlaughlin9530 yes it does. Chewing releases digestive enzymes with your saliva. If you are not chewing, there are far fewer such enzymes released and this digestion isn't fully activated. Just think about it.

Wasn't there (still is?) an issue with the heavy metal concentrations in these meal replacements? I remember soylent (or was it huel?) running a comparisons agains "normal" meals once and suspiciously most of the "normal" meals were fish based (which makes the comparison less bad since fish seem to have high heavy metal concentrations as well). Have you read any of the research about ultra processed foods being bad? Seems like a lot of meal replacements involve a lot of industrial processes so might fall into this category?
@NoBoilerplate
@NoBoilerplate 6 месяцев назад
sure, but, that's all the food at my supermarket and far more of the food in Whole Foods than they'd like us to realise. FLOUR is processed grain. FLOUR! I really like bread! To be less flippant: when I read the ingredients for meal replacements, it's not full of more or less processed stuff than our regular food. So it's not a choice between some magical whole fruit and vegetables and Soylent, it's between to compromises that the system I'm living in forces upon me. And at least Soylent is convenient :D
@tomlin111111111
@tomlin111111111 6 месяцев назад
@@NoBoilerplate I disagree, flour is just ground wheat and doesn't go through any chemical processes, at least not here in the UK. I get your point that a lot of foods contain additives etc. but I think there is a difference here. I'm not en expert but it seems possible that having more than one of these a day could be bad for your health, or it might not, I really think it's worth looking at the reseach if you're consuming these a lot. Anyway, love the content. :D
@NoBoilerplate
@NoBoilerplate 6 месяцев назад
@@tomlin111111111 Aha! I think I see the problem: We're totally agreed on the need to eat healthy ingredients, what is separating us is the very loose definition of 'processed food', and the actual problem processing causes, which is widespread, but incidental - correlation not causation: I BELIEVE the reason processed food is often bad isn't necessarily the actually processing of it, (the NHS defines[1] freezing, canning, and even COOKING as examples of processing!), but the almost universal correlation with adding extra stuff that IS unhealthy, either directly or due to knock-on effects: Sugar, salt, flavour enhancers, fats, etc. If the company making the ready meals, canned goods, breads etc, is so heavily involved in cooking the food, there's almost an EXPECTATION they'll add loads of stuff to it (unlike, say, a farmer producing raw ingredients, or home-cooked food). An unsalted can of vegetable soup would taste bland, right? Sadly, companies are rarely ethical about the damaging health effects of these delicious additions. So, the answer for me (as in many parts of my life) is that the burden of knowledge brings work! Yes, it's a good shortcut to reduce processed food, but even better, if you have time for it, is to pay attention to what you're eating. This is important in the industry outlier of meal replacements because the processing they undergo hasn't (I think) caused the typical addition of bullshit bad stuff. Let me read the ingredients off today's breakfast bottle of chocolate JimmyJoy drink, and you can judge for yourself: - water - soy protein extract (6%) - oats (5%) - starch (I guess in the EU, this is from wheat, thickener and calories, I think) - maltodextrin (wheat sugar, added for simple calories, I think) - Rapeseed oil (4%) - cocoa powder (2%) - oat fibre (1%) - emulsifier (soya lecithin) - thickener (Guar gum - I looked this up and it's Guar bean starch, you have to eat huge amounts of it to cause problems) The rest is vitamins and mineral mix, which have typically-long names I don't care to understand, but seems understandable. While there are a few things here that I am sure are not as good as they can be, it's pretty good. Unlike the OG Soylent, JimmyJoy is a Dutch company, governed by our much higher food standard (yes, even after brexit we still follow them. To change the rules would require a functioning government! ) [1] www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/how-to-eat-a-balanced-diet/what-are-processed-foods/
@emilysmith6897
@emilysmith6897 5 месяцев назад
I tried several meal replacements and they didn't work like this for me at all. First of all, I think people's ideal macronutrient ratios (and micronutrient ratios too for that matter) differ a LOT. I tried the OG Soylent and it didn't leave me satisfied. It tasted good for sure, but it left me unsatisfied afterwards and craving something more and feeling off, like I drank the wrong type of fuel. Sort of like how you feel after stuffing yourself with whatever random single ingredient you happen to have lying around, like eating a meal of ONLY bread or ONLY mayonnaise or whatever. I examined the types of foods I craved most and the types that left me satisfied and realized I do well eating very low carb. This led me to keto, and trying some keto meal replacements which were MUCH better for me. But even then, if I had only keto meal replacements for a longer period of time (like a day or a few), it would leave me again unsatisfied and feeling off and craving something more. I ended up just switching to keto without meal replacements, and it's been great for me! I've been doing it for 7 years at this point. Also of curiousity, I didn't have the "keto flu" or other nastiness during an adaptive period like many experience. My body just loved it from the start with absolutely zero adaptation time. I actually have adaption issues going the other way, i.e. when breaking keto and reintroducing high carb foods. This seems to further suggest that I'm well adapted to a low carb diet. As for why the keto replacements weren't quite right, I suspect the micronutrients need to be tweaked to the individual too. Anyone who runs well fueled on meal replacements can consider themselves lucky, as that means their body's needs are fairly close to the population average, but for everyone else, this doesn't work well unfortunately.. I also think this is related to why some people develop diabetes (which essentially means their carb processing metabolic infrastructure has been overwhelmed), and others don't, while eating the exact same thing.
@juanzavala9023

How bad are your symptoms from going off keto? I've been on keto since I'm 13 (21rn), I recently went off and I genuinely feel like I have dementia. Granted, that wasn't a smart option considering I started having gut issues 6 months ago (probably anxiety based) and then got antibiotics for something else, and then broke keto with a crapton of fast food for a week... it's been a week since I stopped that bingnig, I honestly feel stupid and forget what I'm doing midway a task. during my 8 years of keto, it was on and off. I come from a culture of high blood pressure high carb food, do you think my body has just been well adjusted to keto and I messed it up? Some things here. "Healthy" is NOT a scientific term. The ingredients in these products are well known and researched. Eating only these meal replacements (obviously) is not sustainable. When used to replace other fast/cheap meals, these products are objectively better given their low glycemic index, balanced ratio of macronutrients and presence of many, if not all, essential bioavailable micronutrients. I wouldn't go so far to say that these are either "healthy" or "unhealthy", when examined on their own, just neutral. They are a healthier option in comparison to what they replace, but do not fully replace the need for "healthy" meals. That being said, there is plenty of room for improvement in the ingredient composition of these products. Soy protein isolate has many drawbacks, canola oil is disgusting and artificial sweeteners have always been a point of controversy.

I love Huel, especially the Black versions. Unfortunately, a lot of the meal replacements include sucralose, and my stomach doesn't like that at all (however nice it tastes). They use stevia, and also have bottled premixes (which I sometimes carry during hikes). I've not yet tried making my own. There's also high calorie fat-based with high protein ones (trail butter etc), which are even more useful for hiking. Especially for breakfast, they're a great start that also help with blood glucose management (you may want to do a video about continuous GCM, that was really insightful to wear for a month!).

Simple flavored protein powder tastes better, is more protein dense, and makes me feel fuller with fewer calories. The pre-made Fairlife shakes at Costco actually taste phenomenal and are still quite inexpensive per bottle, about $1.60.

Milk fats are mostly saturated. Drinking caloricly dense foods is not great for anyone who does not want to gain weight. You can look at the WHO recommendations for a diet in general and see how that reflects on milk and honey: "Less than 10% of total energy intake from free sugars (2, 7), which is equivalent to 50 g (or about 12 level teaspoons) for a person of healthy body weight consuming about 2000 calories per day, but ideally is less than 5% of total energy intake for additional health benefits (7). Less than 30% of total energy intake from fats (1, 2, 3). Unsaturated fats (found in fish, avocado and nuts, and in sunflower, soybean, canola and olive oils) are preferable to saturated fats (found in fatty meat, butter, palm and coconut oil, cream, cheese, ghee and lard)" Link in the next comment in case the Channelholder is too busy to look through the comments that are held back for review.

Interesting thesis, 1RM Bench?
@NoBoilerplate
@NoBoilerplate 6 месяцев назад
You're repeating the urban legend that soy is bad for building muscle, I believe. There's no evidence for the 'soy boy' myth: Soya is a staple food eaten around the world forever, and enormously popular in the West for over 60 years. It's *fine*. A quick google found enormous scientific consensus that it's healthier for you than eating red meat, especially for men. (red meat causes prostate cancer). Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence: I note that Soya appears to have no health effects at *all*, despite being extensively studied: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soybean#Health_effects From personal experience, the strongest men I have ever seen I met when I was studying kung fu in rural china for 2 months 5 years ago. Soya has been a staple in China for longer than most of our western countries have existed. I just don't see it. If I can't put your mind to rest, then you'll be relieved that there are ALSO many meal replacement options from the big companies that don't have soya in, they get the protein from other plants. (and sometimes fish!)

@chris-hayes

A video about Soylent, cool! I've been drinking Soylent on/off for ~5 years now. Started with the powder, then just started getting the bottles cause I'm lazy. Anyone new to soylent will probably find the "Original" flavor bland at first, but with time its more subtle flavor quickly became my preference. The past few years I've been drinking "cafe mocha", which is their caffeinated soylent as a sort of coffee replacement (Helps with the coffee withdrawal). Most often I drink it alongside solid food at breakfast. Some tips for anyone wanting to try soylent: - Remember to drink water! Soylent is not for hydration. You will get headaches if you don't drink water. - (imo) Drinking soylent cold is the only way. For bottles, keep em in the fridge, for powder, use ice. - Powder makes washing the bottles challenging, I'd suggest putting the powder on top of the water, or it'll stick to the bottle in clumps, rinsing them the moment you're done is also advised. I'm also a fan of "Vite Ramen". It feels like the Soylent of ramen. One of the few ramens that does not have insane sodium levels. Much more hearty than the well-known instant ramens. I wouldn't call it cheap (and they're constantly out-of-stock), but if you can afford it and get your hands on it, it's a solid 3-minute meal.

One note I'd like to make here based on my own experience having Soylent for breakfast nearly every day for several years: Soylent has a line of flavors with "Cafe" in the name which also contain as much caffeine as a strong cup of coffee (their claim). I have a great deal of trouble getting to a state where I'm functional in the morning -- it takes me something like two hours before I feel awake enough to perform basic tasks with a consistent degree of competence, so being able to skip cooking and making coffee during this period of time has been invaluable. That's the main reason I replace breakfast with Soylent six days in the average week.

The meal replacement companies have standardises on 20% RDA as a serving size, so you're right that about 5 would be average. I've come from the other end side of the spectrum, where keto, whole foods, carnivore, and zerocarb are considered life changers for recovering and stabilizing digestive/mental/physical health. For those who can't tolerate things like Huel, fruit, or carbs in general, an animal-based elimination diet is one of the few options that can help. I'm not wanting to start a debate, just tossing out some information from my years of experience in hopes that it reaches someone who can benefit from it. There are a *lot* of options that are better than the standard diet that most people eat, but you're right that most of those options aren't as convenient. It's a trade-off, as all things are. Don't think Huel and meal replacements will ever be for me, but it is a better option than getting pre-made grocery store/gas station food that's been modified with whatever strange ingredients they put in innocent looking food nowadays (highly processed vegetable/seed oils and sugar being the largest contributors to obesity here in the states).

As cool as this sounds I'd rather just eat more oats, it takes like 2 mins to make, high protein, high fibre, keeps me full and cheap too.
@NoBoilerplate
@NoBoilerplate 8 месяцев назад
I love oats! There's some meal replacements that are based on oats rather than soya. However, while your oats are cheap and fast, they are not, strictly speaking, healthy, in that they aren't a complete food, your work is not yet done. What I like about meal replacements is that it's both the fastest and healthiest meal I could choose, and I've got loads in the cupboard ready to go!

I came into this video expecting to be mad, but then you've made me rethink it. I'm generally very apathetic to food when it's purely for sustenance, and these seem like they could be a good option to deal with that ... I'll come back in a few weeks to see how I feel after trying Huel out!

Considering the food prices in the west, meal replacements sound cheap but compared to extremely affordable and cheap food(also tasty depending on your taste) in India and other asian countries meal replacements are kind of expensive. This is just another perspective people should know about, that's all. And again, another great video Tris!

Actually, data shows Americans and the west in general spend a smaller portion of our incomes on food compared to the rest of the world. Maybe all this "cheap" highly processed food is part of why we have so many chronic diseases?? Don't trust a random company with your health just because they say "vitamins" everywhere. Eat whole foods.
@Houndouur

Are they actually expensive if DIYed? So the ingredients being locally sourced would be following your local cost of living?
@NoBoilerplate
@NoBoilerplate 8 месяцев назад
@@Houndouur Certainly when I tried DIY, it was mostly inexpensive - making it a complete food (omegas, vitamins minerals etc) was the biggest expense. Flour is easy to get in bulk, these extras are the big cost. If someone isn't planning on drinking it for every meal for weeks, I think they could make a mostly-complete food from 3-4 ingredients.

I dunno man, I've trained kung fu in china where soya is a staple and I've seen feats of strength I never thought possible! (see my 'meditation for coders' video for more details) The soya testosterone thing seems to have come from from unsubstantiated rumours perpetuated by people with nothing better to do - there's just no evidence soya does anything to hormones, in fact, there's lots that it does nothing, and much more to say it *reduces* cancer risk (including prostate). As an ex-powerlifter, I'd recommend trying Huel Black, which is high-protein and even has no soya, if I've not persuaded you! Other companies also do high protein options for athletes, too. "Clinical studies show no effects of soy protein or isoflavones on reproductive hormones in men:" www.fertstert.org/article/S0015-0282(09)00966-2/fulltext Good write-up of the research here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soybean#Health_effects Best post-workout recovery drink I ever had, no milk either.

I have basically reached the same conclusions as you but with dry rolled oats, there is none of this kind of "modern" companies that are remotely affordable where i live and most people distrust things like this even though its much better than most food people usually eat here (and traditional cuisine is really unhealthy consisting mostly of meat and grease)

Let's give Plenny Shake a try - i might update the comment with feedback when i tried it. Edit: I think the video describes it perfectly. It doesn't taste fancy, its not bad either, like flour mixed up in water with a slither of flavor. But it does its job pretty damn good. I'm the kind of person who eats and if bored, eats again an hour later and that stuff just saturates me for 6 hours straight. If that's what you expect (which i did, since i came from that video and not an over exaggerating Instagram ad) I'd give it 4.5 out of 5 ( -half a point because apple cinnamon tastes like banana cinnamon - like it as well but unexpected)

I've been using Soylent powder daily for at least breakfast and lunch for almost eight years now. I started with v1.5 and have had every powder version since. I've tried the bottled versions, occasionally, but I find the powder works well for me. I've gone 100% for a few days at a time, but normally I just eat a regular dinner daily. I find myself recommending it pretty much any time someone is discussing a food-related issue. Want to regulate calories and not spend a ton of time meal prepping? Try Soylent. Wish you could get a balanced meal in during busy times? Soylent. Feeling sick and don't have an appetite? Going out of town and don't want to spend a lot eating out three times a day? Doing something physical and don't want to feel loaded down with food? Road trip? Hiking? Biking? Soylent comes in handy so many times it's been worth it just for the special cases. It's pretty crazy to think it's been so long since I first went for it! I remember being pretty nervous trying the first few servings, wondering what it would be like to go without food. Now it's so automatic I can't imagine having to figure out what to eat two or three additional times per day, especially in situations like I mentioned above. It's been a beneficial lifestyle change for sure!
