In this video I give a demo of a fast cutting hand saw in action. This hand saw made by Irwin is one of my favourite fast cutting hand saws around, thanks to its simple, sturdy design, aggressive tooth pattern, and comfortable grip.

I remember the days of buying unsliced bread as a child and the relentless persuit of trying to cut the perfect slice also played a big part in my training to cut wood. Sliced Bread Killed the Sandwich Star!

Brilliant and informative for beginners! I didnt have to listen to 28 minutes of how his inspiration came from his great grandaddy teaching him how to saw wood on a hot humid Mississipi night after wrestling alligators whilst drunk on moonshine. There wasn't unnecessary talk that made the video drag out. Short, simple, to the point but also explained information that is valuable. Please do more videos.😊

I've noticed that Irwin handtools seem to be a notch above other bargain brands. I'm liking the chisels and saws they have a lot compared to other big box type brands. Thx for content. Great intro vid

I was cutting 4x4 post for a project, I thought up a trick to keep saw straight through cut, place 2 pieces of wood, on top of piece your cutting, clamp it down to keep saw from tipping to sides. The cut was straight enough, the board can stand on its own😏 i had to make do, with my free hand, held two pieces with hand over my hand saw.

Another good way to help your cut stay straight is to point your index finger forward, resting it on the recess at the front of the handle hole (This is why it is scalloped and molded in yellow, the same as the grip). That helps keep your forearm and the blade locked in a straight line avoiding "cocking" of the wrist. I've used and sold these saws and actually found them pretty rubbish. They're OK for dry timber and composite panel but, having no set, jam easily when cross cutting wet timber. Plus over time the handle loosens on the blade rendering the built in square useless. And I'm pretty sure the the teeth are designed to cut in both pull and push strokes. Just my two cents worth! Thanks for the great video and explanations.

Another way of cutting through wood at a right angle is to get a square block of wood, clamp it to the piece you work on and use it as a saw guide.

Can i ask you to try the CK sabretooth 8ppi! Its teeth are on par with this irwin but i jave found that they make a V in the cut so its easy to keep the pencil line in the middle of the v for a precision straight cut! You wont be disappointed

Can this saw cut birch rounds? New to this and need a saw! Thanks for your help;)
@baileylineroad
@baileylineroad 5 месяцев назад
Good Morning! So by "birch rounds" do you mean branches of birch trees? Perhaps small trunks? If so, then a saw like the one in my video would work, though whether this is practical depends on diameter and how many you'd like to cut. If you're just cutting rounds less than about 4 inches for a craft project, then yes, this saw is practical. But if they're large, or if you're cutting enough for firewood, then you might consider a cordless pruning saw, or even a chainsaw. What's your situation? Bye for now, Steve

In the UK shuttering (formwork to you Yanks) industry we re-purpose worn out hardpoints into scrapers by cutting them off at about 4 or 5 inches from the handle and dressing the steel flat. You get massive purchase on the handle and they are absolutely perfect for scraping steel or ply shutters. I'm guessing other countries do likewise?

Hand saw is the tool that I hate the most. It's so slow and tiring. I can't wait for my electric saw to come.

Would cut faster if you used more then the middle of the saw.

When you did your fast cut I was cringing because your left hand was in range of saw bounce! Yeah, I get it if you say it never happens but it does!

"...special file, special jig, special person with lots of skill..." I am certainly not special, the files are available at my tool shop and on line and the skill is extremely easy to learn. A sharp saw will cut fast, hard point or not, period. If you like the saw, buy it and use it. But don't base your motivation for using the saw on traditional saws being inferior. If you are doing carpentry and rough work these saws may have a place, but for joinery or bench work, not so much. They are grossly over set and cut a kerf that is easily twice as wide as a minimally set, sharp tradional saw. The handles are uncomfortable and oversized due to being made for gloved hands on construction sites. You will also discover that pointing your index finger down the side of the handle along the length of the saw will further improve your accuracy, although I believe you gripped the handle with four fingers due to it being so large. So, go save a saw, learn a skill. Don't buy into consumerism and disposability just because it seems like the easier way.

the problem isnt the cut or the time it takes its how much effort you have to physically put into each cut wearing yourself out so you can not keep up that pace all day depending on the effort put into each cut....do a video where your cutting up boards all day long and then tell U.S. all how worn out you really are when cutting with both saws... one day or one hour long as a test with each one- the one older designed irwin saw and then another hour with the newer one then show the number of cuts you can maintain without having a stroke or heart attack and be able to do it again the next day without straining you back or arms keeping a steady pace not trying to outdo your numbers...just do a real life test(hire a college age kid to do it if you can not physically do it just for the 2 hours of testing)....i cut up a 16 inch diameter black oak tree with corona pruning saw blade i mounted on a pole saw handle just to see if i could do it and at the end of a 4 hour day resting in between cuts i was so beat i couldnt do it again the next day and the corona blade is a laser cut /double cut blade it cuts 4 times faster than the regular manual pole saw blades or most generic wooden or plastic handled hand saws..

But why are modern saws so damn ugly? I would never keep that thing on my truck unless I needed a beater to cut foam or mdf or some other horrible material that I would never put a nice saw into.
