I’ve been attempting to fix damaged wood projects around my space but my dad has always been the type to just do and dominate a project, neglecting the teaching/instructing part, so videos like this have always been a huge help. So this is a general thank you to all my internet dads who have taught me most of what I know now!

My Dad was a carpenter, but I chose a different career. I inherited his tools but not his skill For years I struggled to make a decent straight cut with a saw, it was always hit & miss that is the clearest and simplest explanation I've ever seen, and I'll try to follow your advice in the future. Thankyou!

Your draw a lineman drive straight into your ribs... is that more comfortable for you to pull your hand into your ribs rather than off to your side? It's something I've learned to deal with in situations where there's no room but with space I prefer not to be ontop of my work but rather slightly off to the side of it. Dad was strict about aligning, he made me cut and study my ends and tell him about when my elbow veered one way or another and when my pressure was on the draw or the drive and when my attack changed too drastically... like I had to point to marks on my ends and explain why each mark happened so this strict sawing education is why I notice your technique so much.

How would I cut a 1 inch wooden dowel using a hand saw but no saw horse? I have a dozen that I need to cut in half as props for a dance performance. I have a few saws, I assume I should use one with smallish teeth. I can't afford to ruin the dowels and am not sure how to hold them in place. I don't have a vice either. I figured I could prop them up on blocks and then cut in between. I have someone to help me hold thing down as needed. Is there a different technique to use on a round dowel as opposed to a rectangular 2x4 or whatever it is that you were cutting?
@buildingsheriff
@buildingsheriff 5 лет назад
Katarina S. You’d be best off using a junior hacksaw. I’d sandwich them in a couple of bits of timber and push down on the top timber as I cut. Let me know if you can do this. Otherwise, I can cut some and send them to you.
@justinsane332
@justinsane332 4 года назад
Cut a v shape into the holding blocks. Place dowel in the v. If it is still hard for you, put tape over the dowel after putting in the blocks.

@@HidInMistProductions Just keep your non-sawing hand firm, but away from the saw blade. Do not saw too quickly, and certainly don’t push down too hard. That is a big mistake. That can cause a saw to flex and pop out of the groove. Slow and steady does it… Let me know how you get on.

@@buildingsheriff I used the saw handle to square the wood , but I did all 4 sides of the wood whereas you only squared 2 sides. But the lines didn't join up. Does this mean the wood wasn't flat or the saw handle wasn't square

That's not the best way to start a cut. You shouldn't pull back, it makes the teeth jump. Use your finger as a fence, and make the cut. As in make a deliberate first stroke to start the kerf. Push it like you mean it, on the line, and with a little practice, you will make perfect straight, plumb cuts.
