Today on Dirt Lifestyle we are going to continue building our onboard air system! Don't get overwhelmed looking at a system like this. If you want to have a fully functional air system on your 4x4 just start from the supply (air compressors) and work your way out. Anyone with a basic understanding of plumbing and electrical can build a system like this.
The benefits to having clean dry air on tap is HUGE and worth all the extra work!

I would switch the air line in the gold wing to other side and put your water lines there so you can use them when your kitchen is laid out.

If it was me, I would put multiple ports behind each gullwing door ... a couple of airports and a couple of waterports so that choices can be made later. But. This is his build and I'm excited to see where it goes

To save some space you might put another solenoid on your manifold and send air in your water tank instead of adding another pump.

I've thought of the same thing!!! I want to get a black pvc water tank with a air inlet and water spout to get warm pressurized water for cleaning mud and short showers.

Watts makes a mini regulator. I have mine down to 6 or 8 psi to charge my pvc pipe water tank

You could put your other air port under the hood for the right side, that would give you air in the LF and RR, easy access throughout vehicle.

I don't understand the Tacoma hate, Nate's channel is called " Dirt Lifestyle" this channel is off road related content. I do enjoy that it is not Jeep specific. I am a 20yr Jeep owner, I've had a highly modified XJ and I have a ZJ build unfinished and unmotivated to even start looking at it again. I have a 2018 JKU that is my DD. I'm stoked to see Toyota stuff on the channel. It's nice to see what options are out there and get information from a true off road enthusiast and fabricator like Nate.

I think you're selling yourself a bit short on some videos. I'm sure there's some sort of study that says keep your youtube videos under X minutes. I know you have the footage and would love to see more about the fab of the manifold etc. Just sometimes I wait all week to see the next episode of fab and its done in 15 minutes. Also, I'm abit bummed in the youtube audience that makes it that your Toyota snow videos get so many views (profits) but these highly skilled videos get less. I know its a struggle, keep up the great work bud. Aloha from Hawaii.

All the talk of potential builds, I'd love to see what you could do with a Toureg/Cayenne. The community that off-roads those are right along the lines with your style. I've got a lightly modified Q7 TDI that is already impressive & it's the weakest/softest of the trio. Your work on the Disco 2 has given me more ideas than time for my 99. Call Firestone and give them the dimensions for the lift bags. Did it for the 2019 4runner after we lifted it 4". Turns out the bags are factory spec'd for a 2004 Yukon...

Go for it, they are super cheap and really do help. Even if you don’t have an automatic/electronically controlled one, but instead some basic lines going to bags, and a digital tire gauge to read the value with a bike/ bike shock pump to set the pressures, they are great. Best mod I did to my JKUR as far as increasing utility goes.

you may consider using 2 pressure switches 90-120 for one compressor and 80-110 for the other compressor. This will stagger the motor start up loads and provide smoother operation. Awesome videos! I have learned much from you!!!

Definitely need a check valve. Otherwise the air can and will leak back out through the compressor, also the head pressure can cause the compressor to not start or blow a fuse. Great video as always! Best fab vids on youtube!

You should weld a coupling to the side of you air tank to put your spare pipe plugs in. That way if you brake off a valve you don’t have to go digging through a bag to find it. It’s right there.

Those in the spring air bags fill the void in the coil and keep it from sagging. They are not meant to lift.

Love the video. I wish you would have shown a bit more on how you built the block manifold. I really enjoy the overland build , I dream of building a 70s ram charger on 1tons with link suspension 37s and maybe the new 3.9 Cummins I want it to sit low but have clearance and lots of flex.

Me, too, re: the manifold. It just looked like two long holes with taps into the long holes. On the short hole, it looks like it goes all the way through, then he just used threaded brass plugs on each end. since we can see the end of the block, the long hole onle goes at least far enough for the two locker taps, and I imagine another brass plug on the other end.

3 things. 1) The Pinzgauer better be 6x6. If not then why bother. 2) There is a someone around where I live with a "Apocalypse/bugout" Subaru Baja. Lifted, bumpers exo-cage, lights... fricking sick. 3) As for your work table/door thing. There is a elementary school, that I have done deliveries to, that was built in the late 60's/early 70's, that has like 10' high doors. Solid wood! Helps with moving kitchen equipment.

For you user accessed air it’s not a bad idea to get a auto retract hose reel and tuck it behind a panel so you can have just the nozzle sticking up at one of the gull wing windows. Less parts to keep track of and simple storage for the hose.

For what its worth, I'd do without a petcock for the drain and just use a threaded brass pipe plug with a female hex drive (McMaster-Carr P/N 50785K114 for 3/8" pipe thread)...excellent corrosion resistance, stays flush to your air tank, and no handle to break off. Its described as a high pressure fitting (low pressure fitting not available with the female hex drive). Glad to see your use of push-to-connect tube fittings...beats the hell out of hose clamps.

I already read you're going to pressurize your water tank. I decided to go a different route. 12v rv water pump hooked to a 16 gallon onboard water tank. The pump has a pressure switch so it turns on and off as you open the faucet or open the valve on the hose. Works and is simple.

Nate, great video, I have one note for you. From my experience those compressors air outlets gets very hot. I could see on the video that you used a stainless steel band to hold the air lines in the outlets. Please consider change this to a better connection that would hold it in a very hot environment. Keep on the great work.

In a transition with wire past a firewall or a tail light area use something called a strain relief they have a made out of metal and nylon and have a rubber in internal feel that hugs the wire prevents any water or dust from going into the cab.

When I built my last shop all of my work benches were built from fire doors, I built the shop for gunsmithing, all of the benches were built so that they were at waist height when standing, or you could pull up a stool and work on something. I put adjustable lights over each work area and a couple of illuminated maginifiers at the stations, we also ran sweated copper air lines, my best friend is a journeyman plumber with quick connect fittings. I plan on using fire doors for my next bench tops, they are great for benches, vise mounting, welding tables, even mounting table top mills and sanders to. Really enjoy your content. Dan.

Being a plumber also def gives us an advantage. Couple things i did on my diy air system. - 1/4" tubing and metric arb tubing fits inside 3/8" plastic tubing as a protective sleeve - for those looking for air storage tanks on a budget, look up low rider websites - plumbing braided supply lines look cool in exposed locations - i do not like the split wire loom, I chose to use vinyl wire sleeve for wire protection. More expensive but a cleaner look imo - also use the 1/2" vinyl wire sleeve material or shrink wrap on your hose clamps to pretty them up and a barrier on painted surfaces - if using plastic tubing on air lines, black has carbon in it helping make it more sun light resistant. The white will break down even in close direct fluorescent lighting situations Sorry if I rambled on haha

I think it would be cool if you put a Subaru up on jack stands, and went over weak points, and places to upgrade/fab. This could sustain people's Subaru desire until you have time to fully mood your own. I have a jeep, but I am really curious to hear your thought's on Subaru's for off-road.

Nate, you should replace your Tacoma's front radiator body mount bushings. I have had two 3rd gen Tacomas now and they both have failed early. Look up Energy Suspensions universal mount, the part number is 9.4101G, love the discovery I miss my old one some days!

Hey Nate, I know this is over a year old, but in reference to building a rally rig, I'm building out a 2002 Forester as a sort of overland rally rig to get up to my mine in the middlefork area. I'm based in Seattle so at some point it'd be awesome to link up and check out each others' ideas. It's been a challenge trying to downsize a lot of concepts into something small and lightweight enough for my rig.

Just a suggestion, you might consider a pop off safety valve. Would hate to see your tank ruined by an over fill. What if your pressure switch fails?

With the extra pressure switch put it in a tee on the end of the tank with the other one. That way its A. handy B. kept where you know it C. can be swapped out in seconds on the trail if you need it. Take it from somebody that used to drive mini trucks on air suspension. The first time that switch goes out you will be glad you can just unplug the the bad one and plug in it in a good one without having to drain the whole system, look for a wrench, and take time to seal and screw in the new one. Something else that is nice is an auto tank drain for the water. Not really needed but just nice so you don't have to crawl under and remember to drain it all the time.

Also, one more thought, when you do your water system, when you design it, think about using a pressurized system using air instead of a pump system. With a low pick up point, you will get more usable water and you don't have to worry about pump failure.

Nate, for the sake of saving some space, had you considered using your air system to pressurize your water tank, rather than add a pump? Like how a SuperSoaker type water gun works. All it would really take to do is run the air line to a pressure regulator, then into the tank. You might even be able to still run air to the second location and still have a water port there too. Just a K.I.S.S. thought since you now have an awesome air system. I guess the only down side would be you would have to take the pressure out of the tank to top it up, but that may not actually be much of an inconvenience, depending on how it's actually used. If the pressure regulator is variable, you would have pressure options from a trickle, to an on-board pressure washer, which I think would make it much more versatile than the limitations in pressure offered by a pump. See what happens when you get me tryin' to do some thinking?? On a side note of questions: You were talking about building a crazy vw TDI at one point, and wanted suggestions as to what to put it in. I think a Pinzgauer would be the ideal ticket. Conversely, I would love to see what you could do with a Mercedes OM606 DOHC 3.0 diesel. Maybe a swap into a Volvo C303/304? There's a guy in the UK that has a shop dedicated to the Mercedes diesel and gets just insane power (pushing 1000hp) out of it with no internal mods...I suspect you already know his RU-vid channel. It actually convinced me to drop the Cummins swap into my M37CDN project and go with the Mighty Merc since it's a few hundred pounds lighter than a 4BT, and much less involved (read costly) to get solid reliable power out of.

Hey Nate, hope you’re still as motivated as you were when you birthed the channel. we really dig the content and every time I go to build on my TJ I try to think of a better way to do something you did and almost always end up with parts that look like Nate parts lol your channel has helped me bust my knuckles and love it, thanks man.

@dirtlifestyle Nate I love these compressors, and your system setup is great. I do suggest that you look into replacing the supply lines from the compressor with Teflon lines. I’ve been down that road a few times where the heat that the compressor generates WILL cause the rubber hose to weaken and burst. I went from the JIC?? pipe threads to 1/4” NPT, and then connected that to a steel braided Teflon hose. Trust me. I also run 2 of these compressors. Also, if you want to get fancy, throw a normally open solenoid valve on the supply side to vent off the pressure from the supply line side of the compressors. It will keep the reed valves from ever being damaged.

Awesome build; makes me realize how simple it really would be to add air. Just an idea on the water, since you already have air you could use your air supply to pressurize your water tanks, obviously with regulator and relief valve. The advantage would be less wiring/ electrical things to fail, smooth water flow and maybe lower noise depending on compressor pressure. Maybe I'm just biased from my standing grudge match with my campers crappy water pump.
