VO2 Max is one of the key performance metrics in cycling, and we’ve found a full-time solicitor with an aerobic engine that could be large enough to compete at the Tour de France.
BikeRadar’s Jack Luke and Joe Norledge have collaborated with UK national hill climb champion (and solicitor!), Andrew Feather in a bid to find out exactly how good he is, taking him to the University of Bath’s Human Performance Laboratory to be tested.

Good stuff guys. Interesting to see the testing at bath. Ive been doing tests with Sportstest for many years and there are subtle differences. Testing needs to be repeatable but the results will be slightly different from different labs. At Sportstest you always use your own bike so you know how it feels. The static bike in bath looks really awkward. Also, during the ramp test the output screen should be blind for the rider as this is too influential as the rider knows their power, time etc and can judge efforts.

VO2 max is just one aspect of a overall performance score I had mine done back in the 70's and had a score of 86.4 but output of wattage power is another consideration and levels like this are on the edge of what a human can maintain for long periods of time.... unless one is very careful with diet and sleep and watching the numbers.

Just like his w/kg, having a really low body weight also helps a great deal with a high v02max, but don’t forget it’s also in the genes... his lactate profile is fascinating though, I’m curious what his training regime looks like - obviously he climbs a lot so I would expect loads of sweet spot efforts as part of his program... ?

I am curious about... What were the cooling arrangements to compensate against heat-induced cardiac drift? The test was long-enough to have over-heating problems resulting in metabolic activity directed towards cooling and away from power generation - were there enough fans? I see that most of the riding was out of the saddle, which provides short-term power increase, but increases heart rate over the longer term thereby reducing long-term power generation. Curious to know how that affected the results. It seems that seated power is lacking through the necessities of the racing type. They looked at lactate to find AT and other zones, but I'm presuming they didn't test to give feedback on LC (lactate capacity) and LT (lactate tolerance) which would have a massive short-hill climbing advantage.

VO2max test is simply about the amount of oxygen an individual can utilize in a given time interval. Great video ! but I'd like to have informations on the testing protocol. Because I work and study in the physical activity field and direct VO2max protocols are supposed to be 12min +- 2mins. Over 14mins is considered a non-valid testing according to the current scientific literature. At least this is what we are thought at university.

I guess that since they are testing both and VO2max AND lactate buildup , they would need the test to be longer than a typical standard VO2max ramp test (1', 20W steps), given the fact that lactate concentration testing needs to be done at longer intervals. What do you think? (from what I can gather, their protocol is 4', 25W steps ; pretty unfamiliar to me as well)
@Mengina
@Mengina 4 года назад
@@JeuneCyclisteDynamique It would be a good idea. But it all depend on the watts increments they use. Because the lactate threshold and limit can be ramped up in around 10 minutes if the cyclist stay in the glycolitic area of effort in terms of energy systems. They would simply have to start the test at a higher resistance. But then the problem is that the resistance would probably be to high to go in the aerobic system. Although I agree with you and my logic goes in the way that a real VO2max should be longer than 12 minutes especially for a cyclist.

No its no guarantee. VO2 is only a part of the equation. Gaimon has a VO2 max of 88 and he barely made it to the world tour. I have a friend with an 86 and he barely makes it as a CAT 2.

An analogy I’ve heard is that a high VO2 is comparable to a big V8 or V10 engine, but guys who are inefficient can’t use it all (like a V8 with only 6 cylinders firing)

@@mikicastan Power which can be sustained for multiple hours without too much effort. It's mostly arbitrary and not really that objective of a measure, but I think Robinson meant that when looking at Feather's lactate levels and heart rate at 275W, he should have no issue maintaining that power "all day" (4+ hours maybe?). VO2 Max measures maximum capacity, so this lower "threshold" is the power he can maintain for a longer period without getting close to his upper limit. Similarly, the 350W Robinson mentions at 9:10 is the power he can maintain for roughly 1 hour (basically FTP) before his body stops being able to process the lactate.

@@mikicastan it's not really used for anything, but more to have a rough idea. I'm sure most people could roughly estimate it themselves based on effort - it's the kind of power you can easily do and cruise at for a long time, which is why this is so impressive as that wattage is higher than the FTP of most recreational riders, and probably close to the FTP of many amateur racers.

Didn't that MTB dude say he had a VO2MAX of 85? Have him tested! :D BTW a lung capacity of 184 L/min is insane for such a short person. I was once tested at Copenhagen university, with a lung capacity recorded at 189 L/min. Which, at the time, was the highest ever recorded at the university. But I am 195 cm tall.

At age 40, I've recently had my VO2 max tested at 58 relative - but 5.3l/min absolute. I'm 6'3" and at 92kg presently, so 30% heavier than your fella there. I have similar power numbers at around 450w at peak at 185bpm, 350w at VT2, 250w at VT1. I can put out a fair bit in a sprint though. I'm no hillclimb champion, I too have a fulltime job and have hardly raced - I've mostly been commuting over NZ winter and I've not been doing any long rides or structured training for 6 months or so. I'm never going to get to an 88 l/min/kg even as I drop 10% back to summer weight. The absolute aerobic capacity he's got is ok- the really great thing is that he has it, and decent leg strength in a 60kg frame.
