Maine didn't recognize anyone at the end, but David brought him back to his sense to give him one last moment, but, this also happens again with David and Lucy at the end, it all comes full circle
Maine being able to see David in his psychosis state speaks volume. Also, if you notice how Maine is running on the road and it stops, that symbolizes the end of the line for Maine. He was running after David this whole time wishing he could restart his life like David and he young. You can see David continue running as Maine stays and watches him go on.
I wonder how much of Maine's psychosis was caused by Sasha's death (and Piler) before the series started. I got the feeling he pushed himself further and faster than he would have otherwise to get strong enough to not lose any more of his crew. The cyberpsychosis disease is always rooted in trauma and mental illness and PTSD as well as the amount of cyberware.
@@pspublic13 every death pushed a character closer to psychosis. Maine pushed himself to be perfect after losing so many. Which then lead to his death. This then pushed David to run as fast as he could, til his time would run out. And he did. He made it a long way but no matter how fast either of them run, death with always win the race in the end.
I don't think he was chasing David and trying to be young again. It doesn't really add up to that idea since Maine's been running his whole life (metaphorically speaking) and he had just recently met David and accepted him into the gang. Imo it just symbolizes that David keeps going for Maine (after he reaches his end of the road where he was destined to die), taking his role and trying to fulfil his dream of reaching farther and leading the crew to greatness.
@@andreinedi1563 I agree bc this then plays into the scenes where David says he’s doing all those enhancements and upgrades to fulfill Maines goal which is to keep his crew safe and never let them down.
For me, the music is what really sells this. The sheer hopelessness and dread you experience in that split second, combined with the look of terror in Davids eyes, this anime turned out way better than I expected
Well of course the anime would turn out incredible; animation Trigger (aka the people who made kill la kill and laguna something other forgot the title) created the anime
God I seriously can’t handle the pain this show has given me lol the fact Maine recognized David’s voice and didn’t attack him showed he really cared for David
Maine went out like a beast and seeing David snapped him out of that psycho state temporarily and gave him that speech fast is what you do best you keep running meaning get out of night city for good
Pain? You don’t know the true meaning of pain. One story I would dare you to read is “I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream.” That story is pitch black, & makes Edge Runners look like a G rated Disney movie. Which is why I wasn’t affect at all watching this series.
I just realized how hard this must have been on David, main was the father figure he never had, technically speaking he watched both of his parents die
I theorized David would have beat smasher in their face off if David was 100% there. He wouldn’t have even started showing sign of going psycho in my opinion if it wasn’t for Maine dying in front of him and the unedited cyberpycho torture BD.
@@Maxsmack I don't think that would have been possible. David's Sandevistan, his silver bullet, was just a rudimentary implant for Smasher. Compared to the game, he is shown as impossible to beat in the anime.
That scream was one of the best screams in any fiction, it’s that kinda scream you have when you’re so angry and so sad but cannot scream because your throat is closed
for six months every time i heard the song i try to listen to what the screaming is saying, i thought it was David screaming for help or for someone to save them
@@AB-ze9vk Perfect timing, I think that was on purpose because that's exactly what I thought. Such an amazing combination of audio and visuals, It almost sounds like MaxTac screaming "Get down" right before the drums start up.
I absolutely love how we see both characters pov in this scene. We see David looking up at Maine in reality, and we see Maine looking down at David in his hallucination. Trigger's cinematography and art style is something else.
Thought the series was awesome. They also ended the whole thing in one season instead of dragging it out. Deep down I want to watch more, but I don’t want a a good show to be milked. It was awesome and I liked the ending
Cybermid bro David was a goofy moron who used his mom's death to do what he really wanted which was acting reckless. Lucy groomed a kid(David) in to joining basically a gang. Rebecca was the best character and they did nothing with her
I’m sure there’s so many of us who did exactly how you’re feeling. It’s so good that you just can’t get enough we’ve seen what they’ve done to amazing animes that they’ve milk before. This one is perfect the way it is.
I like how that "keep running" line was made for David and and a metaphor for him as he trained regularly to be fast and now he is passing the torch to David as now it's your turn to get where you want to be
This was such a raw moment. Nothing but pure downfall in an instant. Straight up madness. Watching David's mind break in that moment for the first time gave me shivers.
Every time I hear "Keep running" or "Just keep running", I always find myself hearing this music and remembering Maines word's, that look before he shot the explosives, what a absolute legend R.I.P. Maine🦾🥀
I love the fact that not many people notice this and I didn’t notice it before but every time David’s senses are heightened or something traumatic happens like this for example, his sandy activates automatically. He just had to witness all that at like 80% normal speed.
@@kingirvine3958 What Lucy theme are you talking about? If you're talking about "I Really Wanna Stay at Your House" that was 100% in the game first. If you're talking about a different theme, ignore that. None of the show's original composition is in the game's soundtracks, and the game's soundtrack was specifically chosen by Trigger for the anime.
@pc_buildyb0i935 you're right. It seems like a was one of many people who usually skipped those songs/station up until the anime popularized them. Playas eff up too... sometimes.
The scene it cuts off is crazy sad too. End of the episode, you see David in a weird middle state between artstyles (normal edge runners and psychosis) sitting with Maines arms, just staring, disassociated. After about four seconds, he looks up and tears stream down his face, cut to black. It was a nice nod to show David too was slipping towards psychosis, but still had enough to ground him to reality in form of the rest of the gang. Also, sad as hell when you realize he did everything in this scene, especially after his scream (where we zoomed into his mouth) in a completely out of body state, and had everything hit him as he held Maines arms
The end of the line for Maine, was the beginning of the end for David. I can’t imagine what it would be like to talk to your mentor one minute, and the next you’re seeing him get torn to shreds second by second. Nothing in any direction that could make it any less gruesome
This is literally one of the all-time greatest animes I have ever watched. It would fall into the range of solo series animes. It is so emotionally artistic. Truly 10/10
The music, the change in art stye for this scene. Everything was perfect it just really sells how far Maine had gone but was still holding on desperately to his sanity to impart his wishes to David. The entire scene seeing David is in the gut-wrenching state of despair. I absolutely loved this series. I really hope we get more seasons, maybe different perspectives of life in Night City or something!
Series should've been longer, given us more episodes to fleshen out the Edgerunner crew, see the development of Lucy and David's relationship. Still though, only a handful of episodes and I was able to not only be sucked back into Cyberpunk after its disastrous release, not only that but love this small group of psychopaths.
A loved one can bring a person out of cyberpsychosis. Lucy did it with David. David did it to Maine. As much as Maine was a father David never have, now we know David was the son Maine wish he had.
This scene is heart wrenching as it is but I can’t help but praise the music choice. Picking songs from the games ost was already a nice touch but this song brings this scene together for me
Man this whole episode really did it for me Maine was already my favorite out the group so watching him slowly turning psycho hit hard the music goes with the scene perfectly along with everything he says to David it just gave me chills and made me actually drop a tear 👏🏾💯
Ive seen this show probably 3 times now, i know this scene is heartbreaking, but i still clicked on it, and now im sad. Why do i this to myself, and how is this show able to make me subject myself to pain for so many times now?
This is the scene that hit me the most from the show. And that's saying a lot cuz there's a lot of scenes I really liked. But this one felt like Maine was David's father. Like no cap, his last words were: "Just keep running".
I hate that Maine had to die but i love the way they had him go out. He went full psychosis, killed his lover and that snapped him back just enough to realise what he had done and he was beyond coming back. He held onto that tiny fragment of himself just long enough to give his final words to David as well as send himself and his lover out in a blaze of glory like they wanted. He died on his own terms, in a way he decided too. Not at the hands of Maxsec (or however it's spelled) like just another psycho.
The fact that cyber-psychosis could come and go like that is sad and scary. Guy could kill a bunch of people and suddenly regain his faculties, seeing what he’s done
