I would love to see a video on intercepting airliners. I recently intercepted an airliner in the FA18 in VR, it was absolutely amazing. But I did wonder how you would normally deal with wake turbulence (sadly not modeled yet) and how close you can/should get
That's easy! Just approach from (slightly) above. Wake turbulence descends and fans outwards behind the aircraft. But there's no need to look into the APU outlet is there? If your flying parallel at or ahead of the wingtip, you should have no turbulence.
@@cgaviator Absolutely true, but we were talking about intercepting ... That means either shooting someone down or coming alongside to signal the pilots of the culprit aircraft. According to EASA data wake turbulence levels out (after descending with 300-500 ft/min) between 500-900 feet below the producing aircraft and at about 5Nm. The trail can be anywhere between 15-25Nm long. Sorry for the lecture ... I know you don't need it ... but might be of interest for your followers. 😇 Anyway ... the blabla aside ... coming in from below ... when needed 😎 ... should be no problem, just don't intercept an airliner by flying straight behind it at the same altitude unless really close in. It'll flip you right over.
@@edwinkorteweg3612 it can get bumpy for sure (ask me how I know that! 😂) and I’ve also wandered into the wingtip vortices plenty, especially using MPRS… now they’re fun! The vortices will spit you back behind the aircraft in no time lol! Generally in cruise flight, there’s not a lot of turbulence from the airframe. It’s mostly engine and vortices that’ll get ya! 👍🏻
Sightseeing is always a plus in these videos. I started with MSFS on the Commodore 64, a very limited pre-PC/Mac personal computer, mid 1980s or so vintage. Basically wire frame planes and scenery on monochrome background. With each evolution of MSFS on the PC it got better, but with 2020 we are about there. I have a new motherboard/processor/graphics card etc. sitting on my desk. They need to go into the box. . .
I love that stage, a fresh build with new potential! I ‘only’ started simming in ‘95 and the change is incredible. I wonder how much further MSFS 2024 will push the graphics. Or whether they’ve mostly invested in the ‘living’ part of the sim. Activities and what not.
Can't remember if it was the same trip or another trip home from Spain or Portugal. But we were on a transit flight at FL 3xx or something like that and directly on a reciprocal track an airliner went straight over the top of us - can't remember now but it was close - the airliner was probably only a couple of FLs above us.
@@jjsmallpiece9234 I remember flying Isle of Man to Valley in a Hawk 3-ship contrailing and flew 2k below an airliner. I can still remember thinking that must have looked epic from the economy seats! 😁
Great video. It's super annoying that the picture jumps around like that when you zoom in, it's hard to hit the buttons - probably also why I want to wait for a possible purchase of Tobii
I’ve not tried it recently to see if they’ve updated software. A few tweaks and this would be incredible and absolutely my go to. But while I have wireless TrackIR, it’s hard to beat!
Bought the Tobii Eye tracker a couple of months ago and it is really a game changer for me, can't fly without it anymore. It gives your a much better realism feel in the sim.
@@cgaviatorIt was very well balanced, nothing is ever perfect as we all know, you highlighted both the pro’s and con’s about it to an incredible level. (and taught me something about TrueView!)
Awesome - love it mate - I'm gonna launch Helis off of Curium! ;-) Top Tip with Tobii..................... turn the eye tracking off and utiilise only the head tracking. Thanks for the video. o7
I'd love to see you intercept stuff. Balloons or airliners. I think I'm going to throw my self in the Griffin and hope you intercept me some where over UK.
Very much appreciate the review. I have been happy with TrackIR functionally, although the extra wire from the headset is a minor annoyance. The most annoying issue has been ambient light/window sensitivity. I now have the computer set up in the basement, so that will be easier to control. From an earlier comment it appears that webcam-based head trackers have gotten much better since last I tried one a decade or so ago. Having spent many years limited to hat switches for view movement I am easy to please.
I do have to lower the blinds and get the tracker just right. There are wireless TrackIR options available that I can say have been a bit of a game changer. Not sure how legal they are, but I now have a wireless headset and wireless TrackIR!
Hi Chris, new subscriber here having come back to simming and upgrading to MSFS from FSX after nearly 5yrs away Really enjoying your videos, reviews and introductions to how the sim world has evolved. Informative, balanced and inspiring. I use an early gen TrackIR with the 3 pronged cap mount but in MSFS I am getting an annoying twitching/zooming in and out using default profile on v5 software. No light pollution or background reflections - have you, or any fellow followers any ideas or a profile you would be willing to share? Keep up the great work- best channel I have subscribed to in ages.
Thanks very much, always nice to hear nice feedback! I use the pro clip because, while it needs plugging into usb, it provides a much more accurate track. It should work fine in default as far as I know.
@@darrenkelly3107 but then if you’re having such issues with twitching and zooming try and get it to work in lower light. It shouldn’t be too bad with the basic clip. Good luck either way 👍🏻
Another cracking and informative video. Sat here awaiting Amazon delivery driver with my Tobi Eye Tracker. I can't wait to increase the immersion in my flight sim. On another note have you tried the Texan 2 and what would you choose between that and the PC-21?
I agree with you on the lack of settings with Tobii, but inspite of that I still prefer it.I am twice liberated in that I also use bluetooth headphones, prior to that I was using the Delan clip system and the software was very flaky so I was glad to shelve it.I also have problems looking down in the cockpit, without that stabilisation and compounded by essential tremor which is genetically linked to my father (thanks dad) And inspite of a brain implant to calm it which it does until I get stressed which will happen when I don't have that missing stabilisation and I want to click on a certain area...............................................
If you are happy with the TrackIR, there is no reason to buy the Tobii. I actually bought a TrackHat about 6 months ago while having a Tobii Eyetracker! This was because I found that the Tobii was too nervous in DCS and MSFS2020 did not yet natively support it. I used the 'Face TrackNoIR' software to be able to use it in MSFS and because the DCS settings in the Tobii GameHub were too limited (at least ... back then.) To be honest ... as soon as put the fidgety 3D printed camera on top of my monitor and needed to wear leds on my head ... I wanted to run back to my Tobii ... and I did! 😂 So I've got a brand new TrackHat for sale 😇. The Tobii is fully supported in MSFS now and it works great. I do agree with Chris; a few more tweaking options would be nice, but I don't miss them for now. I will be revisiting DCS soon and see what's new. The only thing I can think of that bothers me is that my mouse pointer is also affected by my head movement. It would be great if I could seperate that if even temporary by holding a button.
The biggest problem I had with the Tobi is/was when in the TMk1. It sets up as if the camera set back behind the seat harness straps which obscure the view. No adjustment has fixed the problem. So effectively I can't use the Tobi with the TMk1. It works well with the Airbus A320. Been busy with work recently, but I need to try and fix the harness obstruction problem. The Yeti microphone is better.
I ended up returning the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 as I realized I could achieve the same result with a $35 webcam with some basic tweaks. For over $200 for a head tracker that only works with a very limited amount of games, it definitely is not worth that type of money. There are some big name YT-ers out there using an iPad or iPhone to achieve head tracking. The quality of head tracking is definitely far superior from VR headsets, at least in 2023.
I’ll have to check out those free versions. I wonder what the smoothness would be like. With a few tweaks, the TET5 could be incredible. Sadly I never achieve the visual quality I’m used to with VR
If I didn't already have a TrackIR5, I'd be tempted, but as it is I think I'd save my pennies to go full VR. That said, I'd find explainer videos using Ghost really useful - sometimes when checklists are being rattled off it can be difficult to keep up with what you're looking at, so Ghost would be really helpful for tutorials or in-depth reviews.
I had the original version of the Tobii Eye Tracker, but never really used it much. I've tried a couple of the cheaper (or free) head-tracking software/hardware set-ups over the last few years, but I could never really get them set up to work particularly well, so I never shelled out for the full TrackIR thing. I now fly mostly in VR, but obviously suffer with performance and graphics, so I'd be a little bit tempted by the new TET, but I'm not sure I can justify spending over £200 on it.
I just ordered a complete TrackIR 5 set today, including the TrackClip Pro which I hear is very fragile, but it's okay as I'm getting the wireless TrackHat Clip Plus later anyway. Meanwhile, a friend of mine got the Tobii about a month ago. He seems very happy with it, but I'm skeptical that it would be as good and easy to set up in my many games as TrackIR 5. Can you please elaborate as to why you prefer TrackIR over Tobii? As I said, my friend seems very happy with his Tobii + FaceTrackNoIR (for 6-DoF support), so I'm wondering if I made the right choice. After all, these peripherals are pretty expensive.
@@NobbsAndVagene I've had mine for years it is mostly held together with sticky back plastic and a Blue Peter badge. The clip is up for replacement with an RJ SimTech, IR Trackstar that my wife has ordered for my birthday. But the tracker itself is still working fine.
@@philipfoster7269 Sounds nice. What turned you off the Tobii, though? Was it just the lack of official 6-DoF support in most titles? Cause I hear that might be added later. The Tobii is quite a new product compared to TrackIR 5, after all.
Way of the world, everything’s expensive these days! And sure, I prefer how stable and smooth the track IR is. And it uses true view which is a major draw for me. I think with sensitivity a little lower the TET5 would be a bit smoother, but then a little trickier for checking 6.
The Yeti Mic is far better! I use the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 very much, in fast jets and in smaller planes and found the options in the settings good enough. I used Track IR but got rid of it because wearing a hat or a clip with a cable annoyed me to much.
Very interesting and comprehensive review. I have an HP Reverb G2 VR headset (2000 x 2000 per eye). It's very, very good BUT my 10600K/3090 PC is barely up to the task and I think I've spent more time watching settings videos than actually using it! Add the faff of connecting it, accidentally sitting on the cable etc. and I don't always use it. That said, there is no substitute for how real VR feels but this 'no wires' eye tracker does seem a great device. Please can you do an update video in a few months to say whether they added the features you mentioned?
I will certainly update if they do develop the software. I will be using it for some videos as well. It’s very convenient for just sitting in front of the pc and it just working!
I’ve had the Tobi eye tracker for about 2 month….love it with my setup but have never been able to get the mouse zoom to work….tried windowed/full screen etc
@@cgaviator just an update on this issue, finally got mouse warp working by stopping tobii experience and restarting it (from tobii support). It also only works on the center screen but I’m more than happy with than until I can get my 49” widescreen
I dont seem to have any gradient settings under eye tracking on 3.0.1 - also would like to see you trying to punch in settings on your MFD, that is my issue, is the wobble. I am even seeing it happen in your video.
Hi great video great peace of kit definitely be looking into 😊 wanted ask if you have got the time I have got the Osprey by Miltech and I struggling going from flight to hover would you mind doing a video on it please I understand if you are busy thank you anyway 😊
Yeah, sadly it’ll be a while til I’m back in the Osprey. Though all of my Osprey videos include transitions. Final turn transition, straight in TK Gibraltar and my crazy IMC low level to the boat.
Yeti mic is far better sound quality, but then you would expect that I think. I'd love to see some intercept video's, especially if it is possible to use Littlenavmap live view to plan the intercept beforehand. Loved the detail on the Tobi, I was torn between the Tobi and the Track IR, unfortunately as I wear vari-focal glasses the eye tracking wont work with me (according to the Tobi website), so I went with track IR. Really enjoyed seeing where you were looking on screen, a nice touch I think.
@@cgaviator I think its more that the changes in the lens geometry mean the tracker can't accurately predict where you are looking. Normal glasses seem to be fine, its just bi or varifocal lenses.
Appreciate the input. I tried a webcam based head tracker probably a decade ago and really could not get it to work. Times change, stuff gets better. . .
Hey Chris. Really enjoy your videos mate. As a dcs user I'd love to see formation flying/tutorial, and really hope the tornado mod comes out soon if you're allowed to flu that as an ex tornado pilot. Also the f117 was a unicorn to me as a kid it looks so cool!
Thanks for great video! have been considering one of theese. Use MSFS, 32" Monitor @ about 1m. I do have limited neck mobility, ( + / - 30-35 Deg. ), And weare glasses. Tobii or Track-IR ? What do you think? /David.
With TrackIR you need to where something on your head for sensor to mount on. With Tobii you don’t. Both can be setup with varying sensitivity but you have much more control on pitch and yaw with TrackIR. But if you don’t want to wear anything then Tobii is the one 👍🏻
Someone hit the nail on the head in saying that MSFS doesn’t appear to have much inertia to the aircraft. And the FBW modelling is improving but not quite there. I’d say that DCS has it in terms of dynamics.
Yeti Mic is better. Is Tobii better in DCS (CompareD to MSFS). I really get great value from your "instructional Videos" so here is a vote for tutorials on formation flying, Tanking etc. Keep up the good work! Question - how is Instrument Flying taught these days? Looking through a HUD seems to defeat the object (especally in VMC) or is it all done in simulators now?
Lots of good points! Tobii is better as the settings can be dialled in to a better degree. Formation flying, I shall figure out a way in MSFS. Instrument flying is taught by reference to the primary flight display. If the HUD is rated as such then focus can be directed to that. However, they will practice without HUD as well as the standby instruments.
Hi CG. Thx for another interesting video of yours :) Do you fly with other guys sometimes....like us who are watching your vids? And do you have a Discord account/server?
Must be honest, I'm having a nightmare trying to install it. My PC just doesn't recognise it and the link to the Microsoft store fails. I've tried all Tobiis troubleshooting pages with no joy.
Strange, and you’ve installed both software and hooked it up to usb? Have you tried disconnect other peripherals while you test it? Are all your PC drivers up to date?
@@cgaviator Inndeed, all of the above. The 2 LEDs flicker on start up, done a clean reinstall, baffled. Query raised with customer support. Thanks for your concern sir.
@@cgaviator i mean the only way to see online players or friends aircraft i need to own the that particular aircraft or the game will display any generic airplane.
If I had to chose one, it would be TrackIR presently. But the gaze function and tether free operation is a big draw. Just needs slightly better software me thinks
