OSL, or object source lighting, can be a really cool effect for our miniatures. An easy approach to it is with an airbrush, but what about people who don't have one? Well, it doesn't need to be hard, but it does require some thinking.

Love the intro Scott. I'd keep it! One approach that has been working for me is to plan my primary painting in such way that the area where the OSL will be applied is mostly in shadow. Since the residual color from the OSL tends to be dark and saturated, it looks more like lighting when it lifts the blacks as opposed to darkening any brights from the primary painting. Love the channel man. Keep it up!

I like the intro, but I think it needs to mention your name ~two more times to be effective at getting your name out there. "Hi, I'm Scott and this is Painting with Scott and I'm Scott and this is Painting with Scott!" people will wonder if it's an editing error, but only you and I will know that it's a genius ploy

Great video Scott! You tend to vocalize your thought process better than most painters. This to me is more important than watching the process itself. There has been a few times with past videos that I'm like "oh I guess I never thought of it that way".

this layering technique is very common in oil paintings, it works really well with oil paints as they take soooo long to dry which makes blending a simple matter. using a small brush to make your grades or lines, then a wider flat brush to blend, dry, very soft and always following your grades or lines basically taking the edges off them similar to dry painting just less random. acrylic is a nightmare for blending. props to your patience and dedication to finding the effect you want.

Wondering if there if it is acceptable in the mini painting community to do OSL with much less intense coloring of the lighted area? Most of the OSL I have seen seems to almost assume the subject is in a very low light environment. If the subject was supposed to be outside in the sun though, only the most INTENSE of light objects would alter the color of the subject so drastically. Is it just a normal way to do it to have so much color bleed or is that just what I have seen?
@shadowheartart3898
@shadowheartart3898 3 года назад
Late to the party here, but what the heck... There's 2 main points I want to add. 1. It's your mini. If you want less intense colours, do less intense colours! Whether someone else approves or not, you have to make something you will be happy with. 2. Light (And therefore also shadows) on minis generally need to be "artificially enhanced". Minis are very small and, at least the way I learned it, you have to exaggerate if you want the effect to be visible from a bit further away (like standing on the table). When your light then has an actual colour instead of being "neutral light", it tends to become fairly intense. Minor point: generally speaking, fantasy/sci fi minis have colours that are a bit brighter, while realistic minis(like ww1 & 2 soldiers) tend towards earth tones and neutral colours. I would call it partly personal taste and partly genre-specific how intensely your light-sources are coloured

Yeah it really looks like booty her hair at this point is just straight purple can't say how many I have seen that it's just idk why you didn't just dip the thing in the pot of green and call it done because all the work you just did is gone the whole mini is now that color

Really great job with it. The overall effect definitely comes across well, there are a couple areas where the effect hits that I don't 100% agree are quite logical or consistent with the direction of the light source, and I would have probably kept a little bit more white in on the front facing side but that's definitely nitpicking (and you said as much in the video for the white, it's always the side you don't need to be is the better side isn't it?). For not doing OSL very often and especially with a color you don't work with much in that context it looks great.

Great video, purple id my go to "glowy" color. I use 3 colors by ComArt (Iwata's brand I think, I got them through Asset Drop) Opaque Violet, Opaque Bright Rose, and White. Similar to the progression you have above, but, mixing the rose into violet then the white into the rose. Really think you would like the effect.

SCOTT! I had a brain wave the other day for your channel, I thought that if you do a series on making terrain with trash around your house for basing a mini or larger models or making terrain for war gaming in general, you could also do a dice roll where certain numbers add up to what you're going to do. So for example you roll a 6 and that is a mini base and then if you roll again for money or free option if its money you roll for how much and the free option you can select something in the home that you would find in everybody house plastic bottles egg cartons etc... I realise that won't make hella sense but I had to use my fingers to tell you this thanks for the awesome content I'm waiting on a more stable income to support you on patreon thanks for all your hard work!

Some of the struggles I have had with implementing OSL come from having to take the effect layers over the top of painted sections that I am happy with and have already put a good amount of work into. I cannot imagine tackling something like that beautifully painted wolf pelt knowing that if I get a few layers in and am not happy with the direction things are going, it is going to be a painstaking process to get things back to a baseline that I can start over from. Its not like you can just keep throwing your OSL color at it until you like it because the details of the underlying section are still so important to the overall effect and appearance of the mini. Do you think it might help me to practice on a mini with only black primer down? That way I might be able to get more comfortable with the process of getting the OSL in place without the pressure of having to start over with a full repaint anything I am unhappy with - If it goes south, just spray another primer layer and start over...
@Miniac
@Miniac 4 года назад
I think at some point you gotta be fearless and just fail. That being said, there are a few ways to implement OSL. In this video, I painted the whole model first, and then applied the OSL via glazing. You could also instead of painting the areas you know will have the OSL effect, avoid them when putting down your colors and then paint on purples, dark purples, etc. You could even wet blend those colors into your normal base tones during the base coating steps. I've never tried this method, but it could totally work.
