Everyone wants to be able to play the piano fast! It's amazing to see someone play the piano at lightning speed - flying up and down the keyboard! In this lesson, we are going to take the first few steps on the journey to playing fast! We are also going to look at changing the volume of your playing.
In lesson 3 of my beginner piano lessons course I am going to give you an exercise to work on that will start to develop your ability to move you right hand up and down the keyboard. We are going to have a look at how to play a C major scale. Scales are the foundation upon which fast playing is built.
The piece in lesson 3 is a slightly longer piece of music that uses just the right hand and the notes D, E, F, G and A. It only uses whole notes, half notes and quarter notes (semibreves, minims and crotchets) and the right hand doesn't need to move out of position (although it starts on a D rather than middle C - the thumb always stays on the D throughout the piece).
The tempo is fast ("allegro") and so the piece challenges you to play faster than in the previous 2 lessons. Students are encouraged to try to stay relaxed as they play the faster notes. They are also introduced to dynamic markings ("forte" and "piano") and so have to change the volume of their playing as they progress through the piece.
Once again, a backing track is provided so that students are challenged to play the piano in time with the fast beat.
