ABOUT THIS VIDEO
In this video, I talk about fast speech and how to sound more like a native English speaker.
Remember, fast speech isn't really about speaking "quickly"... but it may sound very quick to you since you are a non-native English speaker.
Fast speech simply refers to the way native English speakers change and eliminate sounds as they speak normal, everyday English.
If you are trying to sound more like a native speaker with an American English accent, I give lots of examples in this video to make you aware of what to listen for.
Finally, learning pronunciation by reading how words are spelled is VERY confusing because English is not a phonetic language. So, the best way to learn pronunciation is to listen carefully and imitate what you hear.
NOTE: Fast speech and connected speech are the same thing
Also, here is the list of phrases I discuss in the video:
-What are you doing later?
-Where is he at?
-Did you give it to him?
-How did it go?
-What do you mean?
-Can I go?
-How is it going?
-Would you give it to me.
-I have to go to the store
-Where did you get them?
-I don't know how to do it.

I was born and raised in the Philippines and English is our 2nd official language. We're taught since we're in preparatory and the medium of instruction in our school is English. But unlike my peers, I'm a little more passionate about learning the language and even more passionate about sounding like a native. I'd watch countless American tv shows and movies to expose myself to American English. It paid off....few years later I found myself speaking the language fluently with an American accent. It just flows . Now, I find it easier to express my thoughts using English, than my own native language. Weird. LOL.

Guys, it's ok to learn english and trying or even become a fluent english speaker or even sound like a native, same here I'm a born and raised filipino in the philippines, and I try to sound like a native speaker and try to be fluent in it. But also remember to learn our own language, why learn the english language by taking classes or watchin youtube videos to learn english but not tagalog or whatever your dialect is? We have to be more connected to our roots and be proud of it. One of the most important thing filipino should learn is our language. Why don't you guys take a filipino language class? Or watch youtube videos that will help you in tagalog or bisaya? Actually if you just search it you'll find videos in youtube about learning in tagalog and bisaya, I personally searched for it and found it, and I plan to learn tagalog and bisaya soon, specially when I have time. Now I'm just concentrating in english. 'Coz I already have enough knowledge in tagalog in bisaya, but still wants to be more fluent in both language and dialect. And guys remember to give importance to our own, wether it be language, music, culture, etc. 'Coz remember that's our own, and those are part of who we are as a filipino

@Paskoalee

Japan na, for me, English is the most beautiful language in the world, but is far from being a hard one. You can't judge a language by its "rules" of contractions, because every single language has contractions. Portuguese (my mother tongue), for example, is full of them. Combine this with word genres, plural (which modifies sometimes all the words in a sentence) and a lot of different forms that different subjects use in a sentence. So, English is not hard; it's the opposite. It's a simple and beautiful and very useful language. _I know I've made a lot of mistakes, but it's been only a year since I started learning._
@Paskoalee
@Paskoalee 6 лет назад
@taesthetic, actually, I like English since I was a child, but only around a year ago I really started studying. I watch videos of native English speakers on RU-vid, I read books in English, I watch movies, TV shows, everything in English. It's a complete immersion.

I was talking to my friend about this! They are from Japan and moved to Texas! I was mentioning how we roll stuff together when speaking and how it must be so scary to listen to. Like how instead of saying "You all are going right? Because if you don't want to then I'm going to go by myself." We would say: "Y'all're goin' right? If you don't wanna then I'm gonna go by myself." People who are bilingual are amazing I can't imagine learning another language. So much dedication and hard work. I always admire people who do.

I’ve been looking for that kind of video for years. As I’ve always thought, the biggest problem about textbooks is the way they teach us English in written form rather than spoken form. That’s why I can only watch movies and TV shows with the subtitle activated (in English, of course). Even when I hear the sound and read the captions it doesn’t seem the same. Sometimes, a huge dialogue is spelled out in a second. That’s crazy.

That's why I think that text books audios are ridiculous because poeple don't speak like that, I learnt a lot by hearing natives speakers through RU-vid channels and movies I have a suggestion: Would you make a video about slang that natives speakers use all the time? As well as the informal speech like double negatives and even triple negatives! Also the way that they eliminate the auxiliary verb and stuff like that. It could be great, because as a english learners we have to deal with it all the time! Greets :)
@TheEnglishCoach
@TheEnglishCoach 6 лет назад
Hi, Frank! Those are awesome suggestions... thanks!!! I'll have to add them to my list of video ideas. :) And you're right about textbook audios... NOBODY talks like that. It's actually really sad that people even make curriculum with that kind of material... it really doesn't help you guys in the real world... and nobody wants to sound like a robot in a foreign language. Lol

The English Coach But, on the other hand, you are careless about the written part of learning English. It seems that all the ones that support this kind of learning ignore that learners are also going to write, for example, essays or letters, and I think the most proper way to do so successfully is by studying grammar and formal readings and listenings. English isn't a completely informal language. Anyway, I have to admit that probably its informal part is the most important.

I guess language teachers won't teach those things even if they know it, unless you are in their country. I suspect that's because, as she mentioned in the video, those things are different in different countries and different regions, and the teachers would have to assume that the students are looking for a specific dialect of English. Try asking a teacher who learned English in Australia to teach you linking and reduction and you'll be in for a trip, lol.

The English fast speech you are explaining is the informal English and that is why we as English learners don't understand sometimes, it's just a matter of practicing or speaking with native English speakers in order to learn your fast speech, because we only learn formal English in schools or courses. This is like in Spanish, for example, in Latam we have lots of accents and ways to speak very fast by reducing words or sentences. Very good and useful video!
