Note: It is best practice to unplug your battery before swapping the SSD, but I’ve personally never had an issue with it. Here is a link to the full iFixit guide: www.ifixit.com/Guide/Steam+Deck+SSD+Replacement/148989

Thank you for the tutorial, it really helped me, just one thing you forgot to mention is that hardware controls won't work until you finish the software update, you will need to use the touch screen and after everything is done then controls will work again, so don't panic everything is good

Great easy guide!! I tried to use a regular ol' 2.0 flash drive with an adaptor and it was not a good time I wouldn't recommend lol Took like almost an hour just to hit the desktop to reimage then crashed there. Couldn't even load up the reimage option. Definitely smart of you to have just gotten a cheap USB-C flash drive. I ended up using a micro sd I had sitting around I could wipe, used it with Rufus, process went smoothly after! Thanks again

You should also disconnect the battery before taking out the ssd.

Which size screwdriver did you use? I want to avoid stripping these weak screws that are easy to strip if the size is not an exact match. The inner 4 screws appear to be smaller than the outer 4 screws.

Re-image Steam Deck - This performs a full factory reset - all user info, installed games, applications, or operating systems will be wiped and replaced with stock SteamOS. Reinstall Steam OS - This will reinstall SteamOS on the Steam Deck, while attempting to preserve your games and personal content.

I have question I did the steam recovery image on my usb ( actually I did it on ssd micro card ) but I'm not sure if the image is there because now my win 11 doesn't recognize this card when I put it into usb nothing happens what that means?

That’s okay, it’s formatted for Linux now so it will work on your Steamdeck but not on windows

Im using Mac and flashing the recovery to my 3.2 usb is taking days. any advice? my laptop is brand new and im not sure what the issue is

That’s strange. Can you try another USB? Or port? It should only take no more than 15 minutes.

No your computer should be okay, unless it’s a very old MacBook using a harddrive which would make it very slow.

Any USB would be fine, but I like the one I listed in the description. I don’t think balena is the issue, I’ve used it before. Yeah nothing wrong with the computer then.

In 2024 and with a NVME external caddy you can do it all without losing your data. You can clone the old drive from desktop mode. Then swap the drives and volla no Computer needed.
