The Rhino, Keith Owen, talks about his favorite mount escape and one of the QUICKEST and most effective ways of escaping. A variation of the shrimp or ELBOW ESCAPE, this is a favorite move of Rickson Gracie.
Simplicity is KEY in Jiu Jitsu.

After this video, I've incorporated this into my game and made one modification. Instead of putting the hand on the opposite hip, I actually use my elbow and the blade of my arm into the hip and start to move my shoulders slightly. What I've found for me is my mount escapes, as well as my bottom defenses have started to explode by doing this and using the prayer technique.

Folks any technique you use has a counter to it. Just prepare to counter the counter.

Jim Neitzel Dear Jim, it's understandable your impression. However, although I've never met him personally and only "known" him for years over here, I assure you that's a wrong impression you've got. Not even Marlon Brando could impersonate such a nice guy if he was not that likeable as a person, in the first place. If you check his other videos and get used to his overall demeanor, you'll see that's his real good-humored way to lighten things up while training; he is indeed a very down-to-earth man, funny and humble. And, yes, he is VERY good in Jiu-Jitsu. Cheers!

Keith Owen Jim Neitzel I didn't know the man himself was lurking around to check the Comments here but, lo and behold, there you go *+Jim Neitzel*. By that *"I completely agree with that second part. =)"* of his, it seems you got your (LOL) answer, straight from the thoroughbred horse's mouth himself. Now, how can anyone not love that old Jewish self-deprecating humor, made famous by stand up comedians like Woody Allen, Dave Allen, Jeff Allen and certainly some other "Allen" around?... ;) Now, my dear mr. Owen, I didn't mean to be "nice" or "kind" to you, as I don't value "compliments" of any kind. That was only my way to do you justice. I just thought that I "Owen too much" to your omnipresence around on so many videos on the "YT-JJ circuit" to just pretend that I didn't read Jim's comment, so it would stay there, growing and maybe creating roots in the absence of an autonomous testimony like mine, which I thought could be needed to validate a positive assertion about your "legiti-Mate" Character. Or not... \o/ Now, seriously: I miss those old prepper videos of yours. Hope you're still "in shape", as I feel the tension growing everywhere. Always rely on the Family, the biological, and on your "JJ-Family" as well. Now is the time to put the "JJ-State of Mind" to work. In my own, non-denominational way, I'm praying here for all my Soul-Brothers over there. Humanity will Prevail. Cheers from Brasil!

Hi Keith, looks like a great move. Can you do a follow up video of how to completely get out from under the opponent? This one stops after you've defeated the mount, but you are still under opponent. Thanks.

@@dermotpayne01 my point is that BJJ is often impractical for a real fight. Things that work on the mat don't work on the street. A safe position in BJJ is often a very dangerous position in a street fight. In a tournament you are free to attack a heel hook without worrying about getting kicked in the face. You can lock in an arm bar without worrying about getting bitten. CJJ addresses some of those shortcomings.

Thanks for posting this, but i can't help but feel like I wouldn't be strong enough to pull this off against a heavy opponent with a strong base. I'll give it a whirl of course. i don't want to be a "yeah but" person but without even looking for a reason why, I just don't see this technique working for me. Especially considering i'm almost always on the losing end of strength battles. My mount escape usually involves waiting on the person to see what sub they'll attempt and reversal in transition. I'm terrible at escaping mount against people that are just trying to stay mounted. Hoping this technique will help me.

Amigo you just answered your own question. You escape when they are trying something. If someone wants to hold you down and not move, don't waste energy trying to escape. There is a quote by Helio gracie. I don't remember the specific quote but he says something like in every position there is a moment of weakness. It's in that moment I catch you. Wait for the gap to appear to allow you to turn and stiff arm. You'll find it once you've been mounted and they then try to attack, then you'll start to see the same gap appear before they compete mount. Timing. The same gaps appear at the end and at the start of a movement. We have to suffer first in order to start seeing them first. Gracie Jiu Jitsu.

ZeroSumJ1 there isn't strength in what he is doing. The PARAMOUNT detail of this is that his arm is straight which is creating a rigid frame. that is why it looks like it's strength. It isn't. I hope it worked for you as this was 3 months ago :)
@ZeroSumJ1
@ZeroSumJ1 9 лет назад
It didn't work for me :( I've been using a different mount escape where I get on my side and wedge the bottom elbow between me and the opponent's knee in front of me, then I hip out hard. That way it isn't a battle against gravity. It's my core against their abductors.
@TheJoker-yd4wp
@TheJoker-yd4wp 9 лет назад
ZeroSumJ1 thats also the point of this escape as well when that frame is created the athletic part begins and its time to use that core in conjunction with your feet aka the shrimp.

No you’re not. I use this all the time, and it works. You have to keep moving. You’re not gonna keep your arm frozen in that position you’re going to explode and move.

I'm a newbie just wondering what's to keep your opponent from switching to a technical mount or S mount when you do thisEscape? Why isn't he posting a frame that blocks the other hip as well so it can't move up?

This move has greatly improved all of my top escapes, not just being mounted. When side mounted, one can also push off of the armpit and the shoulders. This is probably the most important defensive move that I've learned in years. Thanks, Keith. College wrestlers and 280 lb behemoths have a much tougher time holding me down now.

No arm bar there but if that hand comes off that hip and collapses on it its trapped and could give the back.. Or just start a bad situation.
