FasTrak scam targets drivers, officials warn

A new warning is out for FasTrak users in the Bay Area, as transit officials say scammers are messaging drivers about "unpaid tolls." Those text messages will direct drivers to a fake FasTrak website with a link to make payments but the agency says it will never ask for payment this way.

@@jameshudkins2210 state tax, property tax, sales tax, registration fees, DMV fees, I can argue insurance, emissions testing, carb emissions standard parts made only for California like catalytic converters that are five times more expensive, etc! your money is taxed into Oblivion.

Pretty sure I had a toll violation the other day and then a few days later I got a text message. I wonder if this needs to be investigated by Fastrak as an inside job. Hopefully someone in the company is not leaking the info to someone else.

Someone needs to pay to operate the Bridges. They need inspection, paint, etc. It is not free.

@@jameshudkins2210 Bridges are highways over water. They should be taken care of using our gas taxes. Do away with tolls, Directors, administrators, etc. They're just another tool used by Sacramento to extort dollars from drivers.

@@tommybottsThese issues and more have been brought up repeatedly over the years. My Parents remembered when the bridges were built. They were supposed to be free once the bridge was paid off. Well, when did a Public Sector group give up a revenue stream? The money was spent to build other bridges and then they continue and even raised the toll from a coin or two to some paper money. It still remains that it costs money and expecting free stuff is always a dream or a Come On for a Con.

How would Fastrak know a driver’s cell phone number (to send them a text) if they driver’s car DOESN’T have a Fastrak responder? NEVER. Alex, with KTVU asked the question, “How would Fasktrak contact a driver who doesn’t have Fastrak?”

They read the License plate and mail to that address.

They are not targeting Fastrak users. They don't know or care whether the person has an account. It works better if they do not have an account. No transponder at all is more likely to cause a real violation, so more credible to scam violation. Cell phone numbers are all over the place, not hard to get. If they send out 10,000 messages and only 1,000 people were in the area and only 100 respond that's a pay off.

The reason it works is because they send the message to people expecting a violation notice. If you really wanted to be a reporter you would figure out how that is happening.
