@@ishimarumasaki1998 difference was Emiya lost everything following his ideals and dreams, and Artoria lost everything following her ideals to be the perfect king. They both had ideals that were meant to benefit others and not themselves. Most other characters had been selfish or screwed over due to their own actions. Kiritsugu? Selfish and killed his way to the top, to be screwed at the end. Cu? I mean he got screwed over saving the wrong dame. While I could say he wasn't selfish, he wasn't following some arbitrary code that took him beyond himself. Artoria and Shiro never existed for themselves and for that, they got screwed hard in the end.
One person saves another, and that person saves another, and so on. THAT is something worth fighting for. Everyone doesn't need to be save, just one, and that one will save a few, and those few will save the many.
Youre kind of getting the point and missing it at the same time, is it really salvation if the person who is saved then goes on to burn away their life "saving" another only for that person to then do the same in an endless cycle of self sacrifice? What is gained there? Salvation at the hands of another is never true because all it is is the passing of one's burdens to another
The ideal of saving others is not a bad thing, but how that is applied can be. Archer sacrificed everything and everyone to pursue his ideal and that destroyed him, he had no balance in his life, he had no life at all, like a machine that was given an objective to complete and eventually disregarded everything else for the sake of achieving an impossible dream, by the time Archer died he had no real reason to live, if a Shiro could just hold on to the connections and people in his life that make him human he could live a very good life, doing good deeds helping people and not being consumed by his ideals like Kiritsugu and Archer were
Well that's the point. If he cherished his life more he wouldn't be able to pursue his ideals of saving everyone. Same with Artoria. Someone becomes a hero ONLY through great achievement and sacrifice. That's the difference between heroes and average people. That's why every heroic spirit holds some sort of trauma/s. Archer's point is that he's disillusioned with humanity, thus trying to undo himself. He doesn't regret the degree to which he went for pursuit of his ideals, only that it lead him nowhere.
I think a big part of why he ended up in hell is because he never had a heroine to ground him like the the 3 Shirous we see do. My headcanon is that Archer comes from the cut Illya route. I like to think when Illya died is when Shirou REALLY threw himself into his ideals of saving people.
I think Shirou was the first time I heard Bryce Papenbrook as a VA, so unlike a lot of people who associate him with other roles he's done, I always end up watching another anime and going oh, they got the guy who did Shirou for this role too.
anyone else thinks ubw abridged, on voice acting alone, already beats this out? Their writing especially in the serious bits are also shockingly amazing
@@lonewolf9578 I dunno man, for me SAO and abridged are two different experiences. I don't think one is better than the other, but both are best for the general theme they're following. One is Shonen one is just comedy. Though the development of Kirito is much easier to digest in abridged. In the original you kinda have to have a basic knowledge in psychology because you have to be quite observant and analytic because the anime doesn't fucking explain why the characters are acting like how they are. They just assume you understand.
@@dan_lazaro Abridged series are meant to be parodies and no, they are not better than most official series. Although there are some English dubs that are gag dubs that are funny, most of the time Abridged Series are meant to be in-jokes for the fans and are not better than the original series.
I cant take any dubbed characters seriously if Bryce Papenbrooke voices them. I love his work and appreciate his best efforts but man. I've heard him on so many other faces that I might as well think theyre him rather than the characters themselves.
What exactly is archer saying about Shirou’s ideals being wrong? I get that Shirou is close to suicidal, but what is wrong with the idea of saving lives?
Shirou wanted to save every single life around him, regardless weather the person is evil or not ... But when shirou became a full fledged heroic spirit, he realised that no matter how many times he tries to save life, their death is inevitable and inorder to save people he must leave some people to die which he never wanted to do . Then he understands his mistake of wanting to save everyone around him is kind of a mistake on his part but the idea of saving people is right. That's the ideal where shirou went wrong.
There’s nothing wrong with the idea of saving lives, that in itself is fine. It’s that Shirou is trying to apply that ideal and do the impossible by saving everyone. Archer is saying that if Shirou keeps trying to go down this path, he’ll end up crushed under the mental weight of “what he could have done,” even if it was Shirou’s best.
@@oneforall715 Umm, he isn't not a true heroic spirit. He's a counter guardian, people who do indeed make it to the throne of heroes, but because of a contract, they are endlessly called upon to kill ANY threat to humanity, even If humanity is the threat.
It's just like the others described. It's the absolute lengths Shirou is willing to go for an ideal that he adopted from Kiritsugu. The lengths he will go just for his ideal is way too extreme, and if he keeps following Archer's path exactly, then he would end up being crushed under the weight of it since he'll realize he can't save everyone. And that's where Shirou in UBW and Archer differ, because Shirou sees the beauty in the path towards his ideals instead of caring about the end goal, and has someone to keep him from going off the deep end should he slip up. His ideals aren't inherently bad, it's how Shirou applies them that's the problem
@@nanaya1398 Shirou's ideal is one of the few resolves which can stand against the opposite side of "Free Will". Any less is far too weak and fragile in order to stop the totality of those who can slay Gods. But even Gods are prone to corruption. Or at least... To stand against the Existence and the Nothingness as one singular entity... Even the very peak of Shirou's ideal shall witness its own dismantlement.
I can't take the dubbed version seriously, Bryce Papenbrook isn't a bad voice actor by any means but I just can't stop thinking about Kirito when I hear his voice.
I mostly know Papenbrook from his work as Shirou. I never watched SAO so when I hear his voice I identify him with Shirou, not Kirito. But I’ve heard this meta-criticism before. I suppose I was lucky enough to have not watched SAO.

He did but the Anime didn't even try explaining why Shirou was rejecting Archer which made him look like a lobotomized Naruto. Shirou was never actually saved when Kiritsugu pulled him out of the fire, physically he was perfectly fine but his mental state was disastrous. He was facing extreme survivors guilt. In the fire he heard people screaming, begging and crying out to him to help them but he didn't help anyone and the dying people started cursing him as a result, hearing and seeing them was crushing his mental state where he had to destroy the part of himself that was affected and keep on moving forward. When he was saved by Kiritsugu, he had extreme guilt and to make the guilt and the nightmares of the fire go away was to take on the dream of Hero of Justice. He without question started to believe in that dream no matter what and was the only thing he was ever truly passionate about. That ideal was the only thing he had and so you can guess why he rejected Archer. It was the only thing he ever had that he cared about and thus wouldn't give it away, period. Even if it would destroy him.
I prefer the dub VA they used for Archer in the Deen adaptation. Liam O'Brien's Archer evokes powerful delivery in every aspect of Archer's character. Too bad they didn't recast him.
He was Karia in the Fate/Zero dub so bringing him back, despite the fact that he was Archer in the DEEN anime would be really jarring for fans that heard him only in Fate/Zero.
