The Irony of these ideals is that no matter which philosophy they followed all of their kingdoms turned to ruin once they were gone

A true King should live for more than their own generation. It's the family name that lives on, a dynasty should always seek to maintain legitimacy of their rule and not leave the future crown to the hungry wolves.

So if I’m understanding correctly... From Iskander perspective a king should be grand and ambitious but at the same time relatable. Someone you can envision fighting for or even being like. Whereas Saber was more like a saint, a savior; something that’s good to fawn over but impossible to relate with. The standard she held herself to was so high that it was as if she existed in a different world, alienating herself from her own subjects.

indeed, iskander is a king who choose to live among his people as a person, with all the quality's, ambitions and faults mortal humans have. saber on the other hand thought that to be and king meant she had to be more than human and thus be distant from them and without the things that come with. iskander knew he wouldn't be around forever and his kingdom would fall and accepted that. saber couldn't accept that and thus thought to erase that past in hopes of something better taking it's place, but even if something better did come along, it would last either. @@chriscant2466 It did not help her mentality that that was exactly the plan. She was supposed to be king for eternity, forever ruling from above as everyone around her died of old age. Like a machine she would act as the organiser and guide for her people... forever. She and EMIYA are exactly alike in this regard. They threw away everything for a singular goal, even if that meant an eternal damnation. Iskander lived his life as if he would die and so lived as fully as possible. Arturia lived her life as if she would never die and so chose to not to live.
@chriscant2466
@chriscant2466 2 года назад
@@Gravora oh that's right, i forgot her sheath avalon essentially made her immortal; i don't think she ever considered ever losing that. also while similar there are some differences between EMIYA and saber; when emiya accepted he thought of it as reward at first. being able to save people forever, what more could he ever ask for . . . until he found out the hard way that the duty of a counter guardian is not what he thought it was. saber saw it as a duty, a responsibility only she and she alone could up hold and that meant immortality was what was needed to achieve that. she found out what happens when you live apart from the people you a trying rule does, but like you said her mentality didn't help.
@Gravora
@Gravora 2 года назад
@@chriscant2466 From what I understand about it I do not even think EMIYA thought being a counter guardian was a reward. No more than we could consider being allowed to breath would be. EMIYA was empty of purpose except the one that Kiritsugu inadvertently gave him. You take away his desire to help people then he essentially would be an empty doll. Something which he makes clear when he retells his survival of the fire. He threw himself away. I think, personally, this is the same as Saber as well. She was not as broken as EMIYA but you could argue she had been brainwashed, by Merlin and her brother Kay, to be a certain way for the good of the country; and she, like EMIYA, was gently guided to her role by the pressures around her and the self-sacrifice of their own identity, for one reason or another.

Iskandars speech gave the first crack and doubt to Saber's hard headed ideals, but the final nail that crack her whole hard headedness is the fact the berserker with so much rage she faced in the war is one of her loyal knights " Lancelot," she finally snap and saw what she did wrong, with Lancelots rage burning aflame blaming her and Iskander's slapping the definition of what a true king to her face, gave her the realization that a king is a savior and also a LEADER, she didn't lead her people, she only saved them, she's being so selfless that she became a entity that no one would like to follow in her path, thats why theres a huge difference of being a hero and a king(leader)

It's worth noting that Artoria at first doubted Iskandar's philosophy on kingship, but when he used his noble phantasm, she saw firsthand how Iskandar's entire army was so loyal to him that they continued to follow him, even after death. What I can interpret here is that since Saber's ideals demand altruism her enemy would be herself (her own desires) leading her people like that would also reqire them to battle their own desires or even set them aside for the good of others. Saber's path of kingship includes to always be ready to make decisions that might force you to give up what you hold dear and make choices you do not want to make. All that, inspired by a dream of a just and peaceful world. Iskanders ideals are obviously quite the opposite. The enemy he is facing is not himself but the world. By embracing his own desires no matter in which form they take (rage or kindness), he accepts himself and has therefore to impose his will on the entire world as a conquerer. He inspires his people with the dream that their own desires are worth fighting for. Even if it means that others might not want these desires to come true and that a conflict that you cannot win is unavoidable. Though Iskander took his time to belittle saber's philosophy of ruling, his also bares the risk of leaving one's allies behind and disregard their desires, not by forcing them to set aside their goals for others, but by focusing only on your own. To me both aspects of their kingship are necessary to be a functional king, any sort of leader or mayebe even a person in general. I think the scene discusses how to prioritize your goals or needs with the needs of people you want to be with or value in any other way.

I don't think you totally got what Iskandar said, embodying all extremes means you also being willing to sacrifice yourself for the good of the people more than anyone else would. All he was trying to say was her way of king wasn't wrong, it's that it was far too removed from reality. Nice observation tho, I agreed till I came to realize you kinda missed the mark a bit, both of their ways were necessary yes, but that's exactly what Iskandar was saying. He knew his way of king was flawed too, he's realized his mistakes and accepted his flaws, thus the reason why he doesn't pursue the grail to change his past. That's why he said a selfish king is 'better' than a figure head, there was a comparison, he didn't say the best. You're right on the fact that there must be a balance, but that's exactly what he was trying to make her see.

I wonder if their different philosophies stem from their upbringings and sources of royalty. Saber/Artoria was essentially destined to be king and more or less became one simply because she pulled Excalibur from the Stone, thus her Kingship stemmed from Divine Providence and in turn made her believe a King needed to act differently from others while Alexander/Rider became a king through earning it rather than simply having it handed to him and had a more grounded mindset.

A King leads and abandons no one even if they are your enemies. Its amazing how anime attempts to explore some of the most ambitious, philosophical themes ever presented in media. Iskandar's philosophy is a controversial one but one which it is also hard to see the value in. His philosophy is flawed, he was a tyrant however, he shows that it is simply not enough to be the martyr, like Saber constantly saving her people, but abandoning them when they become evil to her eyes. You must lead, especially those that disagree with you, because otherwise, your dreams are not worthy for the dreams of a King.

All kingdoms rise and fall. No matter the ideals or its people. It is within human nature. The debacle of true or false king is another of that of diverging views in life. Both could serve its people and save it. But much like a flame. The ideals sputter and fade over time and get reduced to nothing - if not crushed by an oposing ideal. To that end nobody can argue that a king should embody good and evil to its extremes and rage longer than the subjects he commands and even opposing kingdoms. I love saber, but i cannot help but think she is wrong. I love the tale of artorias as it is, but this gave me new perspective. Kindness - is merely status. In the end it matters not if you were cruel nor kind in life. Its merely what bed you want to die on. A comfortable one surrounded by your loved ones. Or one without people by your side - or rather those plotting to take the throne..... but alas.... strength is bred by agrression and not passivity. So a true king could argue that surrounding himself with men of power and extremes is best for its people. An argument as old and long as the tale of time....

Indeed it fell. But why did it fell? Was it conquered by enemies? Or did his people led to its destruction following their dreams? That's the main difference here. Alexander created a huge empire and the only thing that kept it together at the beginning was his towering presence. Had he lived another 5 to 10 years he could have consolidated his dynasty and the empire might have endured. But he didn't, and his followers were people capable of leading nations. The only reason they followed him was because they acknowledge him as greater they they were. Cassander, Ptolemy, Antigonus, Seleucus, and so many others. Each of them an accomplished general and politician and capable of ruling. Do you honestly believe that these people would have accepted the subordinate role to each other? They bowed to no one except Alexander. That is what led to the fracturing of the empire. And note that his people didn't fall immediately, the Hellenistic kingdoms still existed for more than 300 years after Alexander's death. So no, he might mourn for the end of his united empire, but his people knew how to live after his death and continued to live and thrive in their kingdoms. His vision and way of kingship taught his people how to survive and live. And they did. What about Artoria's kingdom though? Did her people survive her death? No, they didn't. After her death Camelot was no more, the land was conquered by the Saxons and the last Roman Celts were driven to Wales, forced to pay homage to the new English rulers. Her way of kingship made her people dependent on their ruler and they didn't know how to live without her. Her way of the king was not something that anyone after her was willing to emulate, indeed I don't even think that anyone ever truly understood her way of life and thinking. That's the difference between them and what Alexander is criticizing specifically. I love Arturia, but she is acting as a knight, not as a king should. And that's the problem. A knight is obliged to serve the people and his lord. A king is supposed to lead his people. To offer them a dream and something to aspire to. He needs to be greedy and seek more. He has to always try to benefit his country and people. And through them, to fulfill his ambitions.

He basically pointed out that he is a soldier too and everything they did he did too. He owns what they own and he goes what they go through. He then told them to leave because he would not force them to stay but that that's an action they have to live with themselves. There was also the Hyphasis Mutiny where the soldiers mutinied bc they got too tired and weary but Alexander urged them to keep going to unite the land and achieve the impossible, but his soldiers actually talked him out of it so he turned the army back. I think Fate reflected his attitude very well in the anime; he was tough when it needed to be, greedy when he should be, but humble to realize when he needed to listen.

@3one7crew
@3one7crew 3 года назад
She wasn't the king of the Angelo-Saxons, she was of the people before them. Artoria doesn't see the UK as her kingdom, but as the conquerors that ended it. Calling it 'that kingdom continued' would be like calling modern Italy the continued Roman Empire, ignoring the Lombards that conquered Italy, and whose kingdom truly evolved into what exists today. Also Artoria and Mordred died to each other while fighting over the throne. Not sure calling out Iskander's empire for falling to greed after his death says worse about his rule than the one who died while killing her son after a usurpation of the throne
@thereptile9467

@@3one7crew Iskandar's Empire was already falling apart while he was alive thou, much worse than Saber who has to fight tooth and nail to keep her kingdom floating while being surrounded in every single direction by enemies to be entirely honest. Like, his "loyal army" basically turned on him when he made the unreasonable demand of invading India, saying that he's basically telling them to go their deaths for a meaningless invasion. In turn he started doubting his close advisors and started killing some of them willy nilly. Some say that he was poisoned because the people finally had enough of his nonsense. Iskandar did more conquering than he actually did ruling, and that was basically his downfall once people got sick and tired of fighting. Iskandar: Happy>People Miserable>Die. Saber: Worry>People do Ok>Die. Remember, for all of the "The king isn't human" thing, the common citizen never actually turned against Saber, they didn't understand her, yes, but no one denies that she didn't do a damn fine job. It was her son leading a militant force following a royal scandal that killed off or crippled most of her allies that did her in.

@darknesswave100

I've listened to this numerous times and what Iskander says here is 100% true. A king should be somebody who's a leader and one you admire and follow not because that's what you're supposed to do but it's because you yourself wish to. A true king is one of his people. He isn't above them. He isn't on some higher plane of existence. He's somebody who embodies what a leader and in Iskander's mind a conquerer should be at their very core. Somebody who you would give your life for without a thought but at the same time you know would do the same for each of his people without question. The problem with Saber is that she wasn't a leader. She was a savior. Those two things are massively different in many ways but in this case there's just one that applies here. She stepped in to save her people and that's fine and a noble thing to do to be sure. The problem is that it's all she ever did. Time and time again she saved her people but never taught them to save themselves. You can see the difference when Iskander uses his Noble Phantasm. He has all of his people he led following him even in death. Then you have Saber who sits alone on top of a hill that overlooks countless corpses representing the people she saved but left helpless after she was gone. She even says it a few times when talking about her wish for the Grail. She wants to go back and SAVE her people. What good would that do? Some cataclysmic event happened and she wanted to go back and save them from it but who's to say another one wouldn't happen the next day, the next week, the next year? Every path at the end of her reign as a "king" is the same. An inevitable demise for her people because she never showed them what a true king should embody. So after she is gone nobody knows how to step up and lead those that are left behind since they had a reliance on the savior to take care of them

Doing so would be an insult to everyone who followed and trusted you, who bled and died for you, and to say you want to just undo it all says that she thinks their sacrifices had no real meaning in the end, and that they died for nothing. But they didn't, they died serving a person they believed in and for a cause and purpose they were proud of. The problem with Artoria is that she has the essense of a dragon inside and her and was raised by Merlin who leans strongly on his incubus side.She was destined to be incompatible with humanity because of these two factors.She was raised to be and strive to be a perfect king and she easily embraced it because of the inhuman part of her which makes it look logical and feasible.If she was more open and not a martyr that makes everything herself and keeps others at bay, she would in theory never have been betrayed but even if Merlin taught her better, the fact she was born with dragonic factor and had to lead Britain out of the Age of Mystery would bring her conflict with people anyway, as most if not all of her desisions would be too inhuman in the logic behind them and of course, no one would understand her and what isn't understood ends up being feared and later hated.

About Iskandar’s line “You may have indeed saved them, but you’ve never led them.”, is he saying that Artoria didn’t help his knights with their personal problems, like Lancelot’s lust?
@thegooneygamerboy5302
@thegooneygamerboy5302 Год назад
No, he means that she was far too distant. Her idea of a king is basically a civil servant or a protector, one who fights by themselves and doing everything themselves It wouldn’t be strange to think she wasn’t human, sure she looks, talks, and bleeds like a human, but she never had that one important component, worldly desires or more accurately the seven deadly sins that reside in all humans. Example: She never lusted after someone She never was greedy She never envied She never experienced gluttony She was never wrathful She never experienced sloth And she never took pride in herself as a individual She never had those qualities so she was seen as inhuman, the seven deadly sins exist because they make people people, the ambition for wealth comes from greed, love comes from lust, sense of one’s worth is pride, the drive for knowledge is a form of gluttony, the power to fight and protect the one’s you love comes from wrath, innovation is born through the thinking of “what if there is a better way” aka sloth, and the admiration children have for heroes is envy. The Seven deadly sins aren’t bad or good because they are part of us, the purest part because it’s not purely good or evil. Artoria was different, too different, and that was the problem she didn’t have any substance, just the constant self sacrifice and forcing her followers to do the same, which in a way is selfish. And would you serve someone like that, a person who has cast aside their natural human desires never acknowledging them, to go to a battlefield feeling practically alone even when your lord and master is right next to you, to constantly be force to do things without gaining anything, are okay with being a slave to what’s right and not decided your own decisions? “A man chooses, a slave obeys”, a quote that says a lot, the path to kingship is long and blinding, it can be as dark as a black hole or as bright as a white dwarf star, in the end no matter how much you or your friends and allies walk it it’s impossible to see what’s up ahead, Artoria ran ahead leaving her friends and trusted allies to die alone on the battlefields they fought, while Ishkandar ran with his friends and trusted allies fighting, even when he was far ahead on the battlefield he was still right next to them. Artoria placed herself on a pedestal so high to the point she was unreachable Alexander placed himself on a pedestal too but high enough to be admired and low enough to be relatable That’s my way of explaining.

@@audreyharris7643Yes they do but they also make what who we are. We are lustful, prideful, greed, enviable, gluttonous, angry, and lazy but that doesn’t mean we can just ignore those qualities. What we must do is control them, bottling them up has never helped and just letting them loose only harms others, hell imagine yourself without these sins good and bad. Not very good am I right? Without greed yes people in power will stop cutting corners and actually care those beneath them but that also means we loose the drive to be anything in life. Without envy yes people will also stop trying to bring people down for the pettiest of reasons but most people look up to others cause we envy them. Without sloth yes people will be doing more in life but I think we can agree the feeling of laziness is far too comfortable to give up. With wrath, we’ll that’s pretty self explanatory. Without lust, there will be no more humans and physical attraction to other people is what gets you to pursue a lover interest. Without gluttony, we can loose our desire to learn. And without pride, we would have no sense of self respect in our lives, just because they are called the seven deadly SINS doesn’t mean they are entirely bad. Hell, try think of life with JUST the seven virtues, the two balance each other out, if you think life would be bad if we ONLY had the seven sins them it would be safe to say the same could be said of the seven virtues in its own way.

Saber’s path of kingship was one of ideals, fairness and justice. This path was too hard for the people of her era to follow, but unlike dreams ideals can live on. Iskandar was a great king because he followed his human desires and dreams above all else, but just like most kings what he leaves behind after his death is a power struggle followed by more destruction. This is why the very concept of kings and monarchy has been abandones by modern society. For saber to undo her past would be undermining everything she fought for, because those ideals lived on beyond the destruction of her kingdom and could inspire future generations to create a better world. She chose a path of kingship that was perfect for an immoral nation that was destined to fall, by creating ideals that inspire a fair and just society for the future. While iskandar is right about the meaning of a king, ultimately as we see in his fight against gilgamesh, dreams die when the dreamer ends. Iskandar also grows in realizing that he wants a better future for his friend waver rather than to see him die against gilgamesh, so he tells him to live on.

Both Artoria's and Iskandar's ideals are both right and wrong at the same time. However if we are going to look into the legacy they had left Artoria's kingdom fell alongside with her after Mordred's Rebellion I mean sure they lived on through the myths and the literatures of Men but thats the problem Artoria just simply fell into a non existent fairy tale myth just like the Gods of Fateverse. Iskandar on the other hand, people had not realized that his greatest legacy was not the extent of his Empire but rather the fracturing of his Empire itself because from the petty kingdoms that rose after Iskandar's death came forth new Cultures, Wisdoms and Discoveries that would not only be forever etched in the histories of Mankind but would also continue to influence the growth of Humanity up to this day.
